Xenosaurus Tzacualtipantecus. the Zacualtipán Knob-Scaled Lizard Is Endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern Mexico
Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). The list com- prises 133 species (24 amphibians, 109 reptiles), representing 27 families (9 amphibians, 18 reptiles) and 65 genera (16 amphibians, 49 reptiles). Coahuila has a high richness of lizards in the genus Sceloporus. Coahuila has relatively few state endemics, but has several regional endemics. Overlap in the herpetofauna of Coahuila and bordering states is fairly extensive. Of the 132 species of native amphibians and reptiles, eight are listed as Vulnerable, six as Near Threatened, and six as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. In the SEMARNAT listing, 19 species are Subject to Special Protection, 26 are Threatened, and three are in Danger of Extinction. -

THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES OF NEW MEXICO 2008 BIENNIAL REVIEW DRAFT First Public Comment Period March 11, 2008 New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Conservation Services Division DRAFT 2008 Biennial Review of T & E Species of NM, 3/11/08 THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES OF NEW MEXICO 2008 Biennial Review and Recommendations Authority: Wildlife Conservation Act (17-2-37 through 17-2-46 NMSA 1978) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: A total of 118 species and subspecies are on the 2008 list of threatened and endangered New Mexico wildlife. The list includes 2 crustaceans, 25 mollusks, 23 fishes, 6 amphibians, 15 reptiles, 32 birds and 15 mammals (Tables 1, 2). An additional 7 species of mammals has been listed as restricted to facilitate control of traffic in federally protected species. A species is endangered if it is in jeopardy of extinction or extirpation from the state; a species is threatened if it is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range in New Mexico. Species or subspecies of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, mollusks, and crustaceans native to New Mexico may be listed as threatened or endangered under the Wildlife Conservation Act (WCA). During the Biennial Review, species may be upgraded from threatened to endangered, or downgraded from endangered to threatened, based upon data, views, and information regarding the biological and ecological status of the species. Investigations for new listings or removals from the list (delistings) can be undertaken at any time, but require additional procedures from those for the Biennial Review. The 2006 Biennial Review contained a recommendation for maintaining the status for 119 species and subspecies listed as threatened, endangered, or restricted under the WCA, and uplisting four species (Arizona grasshopper sparrow, Pecos bluntnose shiner, spikedace, and meadow jumping mouse ) from threatened to endangered and downlisting two species (shortneck snaggletooth and piping plover) from endangered to threatened. -

Other Contributions Distribution Notes Reptilia: Squamata (snakes) Noteworthy records of snakes of the Lampropeltis mexicana complex from northeastern Mexico The geographic distribution of kingsnakes in the Lampropeltis mexicana complex in Mexico remains poorly known. Species in this complex range across rocky regions of the Chihuahuan Desert, Central Mexican Plateau, Sierra Madre Occidental, and northern Sierra Madre Oriental. Over the past decade, several reports have enhanced our knowledge of the distribution of these snakes in Mexico (Ingrasci et al., 2008; Farr et al., 2009; Hansen and Bryson, 2009; Savage and Hansen, 2009; Ahumada-Carrillo et al., 2011; Hansen et al., 2011; Roth-Monzón et al., 2011; Price et al., 2012; Ahumada-Carrillo et al., 2014; Carbajal-Márquez and Quintero-Díaz, 2014; Hansen et al., 2015; Hernández-Melo and Fernández-Badillo, 2015; Terán-Juárez et al., 2015; Grünwald et al., 2016; Hansen et al., 2016). Here we present new records for two species in the complex, L. alterna and L. mexicana, from the states of Coahuila and Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico. We follow the most recent taxonomy for the L. mexicana complex (Bryson et al., 2007). Previous studies, however, allocated L. mexicana from Coahuila and Nuevo León to the subspecies L. m. thayeri (Gehlbach, 1967; Hilken and Schlepper, 1998). We determined the geocoordinates using map datum WGS 84. The museum acronyms follow Sabaj (2016). Lampropeltis alterna: NUEVO LEÓN: Municipio de Hidalgo, Sierra El Fraile y San Miguel, Potrero Chico (25.949634°N, 100.476592°W); elev. 710 m; 8 June 2013; Adriana González-Martínez. Photo voucher TNHC 100686 (Fig. 1A). The snake was active during the day and photographed by rock climbers. -
Variable Kingsnake Care
Mexican Kingsnake Care Sheet (Lampropeltis mexicana ssp.) **For generalized, background information on snake care and husbandry, please see the “General Snake Care Sheet” first** The Mexican kingsnake is a medium sized colubrid native to various portions of Mexico, depending on the subspecies described below. This secretive and somewhat fossorial species occupies primarily the deserts and other dry, arid regions of these areas. These nocturnal snakes feed primarily on frogs, lizards, and small rodents in the wild. Mexican kingsnakes can exhibit a wide array of natural colors and patterns, known as polymorphism, giving at least one of the subspecies its common name of “Variable Kingsnake”. Hatchlings and juveniles may require lizard scented prey from time to time, but given the proper care, these king snakes can attain longevity of 15-25 years in captivity on average. Size and Description Hatchling Mexican king snakes typically range from six to nine inches in length. As adults, they average between approximately two and three feet (or 24-40”). -

Despite an increase in studies that rely solely on molecular data to differentiate between species, additional evidence that supports genealogically-based species delimitation is desirable at least for field and museum identification of species and is part of an integrative approach to taxonomy. The present study uses geometric morphometric (GM) analyses to examine six species of milksnake (genus Lampropeltis) that have recently been delimited based on multilocus data in a coalescent frame- work. Landmarks are plotted onto the dorsal view of 487 specimens and canonical variate analysis (CVA) is used to determine whether the differences in head shape of these six species can be used to correctly classify specimens. For five of the six species, CVA accurately classifies individuals >70% of the time. Early observations by naturalists of the mimetic association between venomous New World coral snakes of the genus Micrurus and harmless mimics has stimulated an intense debate about the causes and consequences of mimicry that persists today. Despite its medical, evolutionary and historical importance our understanding of evolution within the genus Micrurus is negligible. My dissertation explores the evolution of mimicry within South American coral snakes and their mimics using a multi-scale framework involving macroevolutionary (Chapter I), geographic/morphological concordance (Chapters II and III), behavioral (Chapter IV), and phylogeographic (Chapter V) approaches. -

SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than the occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition.
