Xenosaurus Tzacualtipantecus. the Zacualtipán Knob-Scaled Lizard Is Endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of Eastern Mexico
Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus. The Zacualtipán knob-scaled lizard is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This medium-large lizard (female holotype measures 188 mm in total length) is known only from the vicinity of the type locality in eastern Hidalgo, at an elevation of 1,900 m in pine-oak forest, and a nearby locality at 2,000 m in northern Veracruz (Woolrich- Piña and Smith 2012). Xenosaurus tzacualtipantecus is thought to belong to the northern clade of the genus, which also contains X. newmanorum and X. platyceps (Bhullar 2011). As with its congeners, X. tzacualtipantecus is an inhabitant of crevices in limestone rocks. This species consumes beetles and lepidopteran larvae and gives birth to living young. The habitat of this lizard in the vicinity of the type locality is being deforested, and people in nearby towns have created an open garbage dump in this area. We determined its EVS as 17, in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its status by the IUCN and SEMAR- NAT presently are undetermined. This newly described endemic species is one of nine known species in the monogeneric family Xenosauridae, which is endemic to northern Mesoamerica (Mexico from Tamaulipas to Chiapas and into the montane portions of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala). All but one of these nine species is endemic to Mexico. Lampropeltis zonata (Lockington ex Blainville) • DISTRIBUTION.The main body of the range is from northern California Mountain Kingsnake Kern County, California, northward along the western flank of the Sierra Nevada into southwestern Oregon and southward in ? [Coluber] (Zacholus) zonatus Blainville, 1835:293. Type• the eastern part of the Coast Ranges (avoiding the moist locality, "Californie". Holotype formerly in Paris Museum, coastal region) to the area north of San Francisco Bay. South not now known to exist, collected by Paul Emile Botta. of San Francisco Bay, the species occurs in disjunct populations Bellophis zonatus Lockington, 1876:52. A remarkably destroyed, formerly California Acad. The species may be present Ophibolus triangulus var. zonatus: Garman, 1883:155 (but not on Santa Catalina Island off the coast of southern California, p. 67). New combination. as inferred from the following statement by Holder (1910: Ophibolus pyrrhomelas: Cope, 1892:610. Considers zonatus of 194): "Between Little Harbor and the Isthmus ... Coe State Park Kingsnakes Creatures of Coe By Joseph Belli Kingsnakes may, after rattlesnakes, be the most familiar snakes to the gen- eral public. Many species feature attractive patterns, usually bands of several colors. Yet that’s not what they’re known for. Kingsnakes are famous for eat- ing other snakes, especially rattlesnakes, whose venom they’re immune to. That’s where the name comes from—what better title to bestow upon a snake that eats rattlers than the king of snakes? Then again, Budweiser was once known as the king of beers, and that crown hasn’t worn well over time. Kingsnakes, though, continue to enjoy a lofty reputation, getting the thumbs-up even from people who otherwise have no use for snakes. Far be it from me to besmirch the goodwill extended toward kingsnakes, but their rattlesnake-killing prowess is overrated. A friend living in Gold Country called me up excitedly last spring. He’d just seen a kingsnake on his property and was wondering if that meant the rattlesnakes would disappear. I told him not to hold his breath. Kingsnakes occasionally eat rattlesnakes, but they have a wide and varied diet consisting of lizards, amphibians, all sorts of snakes (including their own kind), birds, eggs, and small mammals. In short, they don’t single out rattlesnakes. California kingsnakes (Lampropeltis californiae), the banded, two-toned snakes found throughout most of the state, were until recently considered a subspecies of common kingsnake, one of a handful of snake species found coast to coast. -

The list com- prises 133 species (24 amphibians, 109 reptiles), representing 27 families (9 amphibians, 18 reptiles) and 65 genera (16 amphibians, 49 reptiles). Coahuila has a high richness of lizards in the genus Sceloporus. Coahuila has relatively few state endemics, but has several regional endemics. Overlap in the herpetofauna of Coahuila and bordering states is fairly extensive. Of the 132 species of native amphibians and reptiles, eight are listed as Vulnerable, six as Near Threatened, and six as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. In the SEMARNAT listing, 19 species are Subject to Special Protection, 26 are Threatened, and three are in Danger of Extinction. -

Eastern, Florida, Speckled, Black, & Apalachicola Kingsnake Lampropeltis getula, L. floridana, L. holbrooki, L. nigra, & L. meansi Upland Snake Species Profile Natural History: Kingsnakes are known for their propensity to eat other snakes (ophiophagy). They have evolved to be resistant to venom and therefore will regularly consume venomous snakes. Their diet also includes lizards, turtle eggs, birds, and small mammals. Kingsnakes are primarily active during the daytime and use refugia, like mammal burrows, stump holes, rock piles, and downed logs to escape extreme hot or cold temperatures. These terrestrial snakes use many habitat types including pine forests, sandhills, hardwood forests, and meadows. They are sometimes found around the shorelines of wetlands. Name Game The genus of this species group, Lampropeltis, is a combination of two Greek words: lampros, which means shiny, and pelta, which means shield. “Shinyshield” refers to the glossy appearance of scales on all kingsnake species. Members of the genus can be found throughout the southern United States westward to California, as far north as Maine, and Kingsnakes northwestward to Montana. Florida (L. floridana) and Speckled Florida Apalachicola (L. meansi) kingsnakes are creamy- Apalachicola white in color and have thick dark brown to tan bands. Psychologists have proven that a fear of snakes (called ophidiophobia) is acquired; we are not born with it. Once people learn some of the interesting facts about snakes and discover that most of them are harmless and beneficial, their aversion may diminish.
