Coe State Park Kingsnakes Creatures of Coe By Joseph Belli Kingsnakes may, after rattlesnakes, be the most familiar snakes to the gen- eral public. Many species feature attractive patterns, usually bands of several colors. Yet that’s not what they’re known for. Kingsnakes are famous for eat- ing other snakes, especially rattlesnakes, whose venom they’re immune to. That’s where the name comes from—what better title to bestow upon a snake that eats rattlers than the king of snakes? Then again, Budweiser was once known as the king of beers, and that crown hasn’t worn well over time. Kingsnakes, though, continue to enjoy a lofty reputation, getting the thumbs-up even from people who otherwise have no use for snakes. Far be it from me to besmirch the goodwill extended toward kingsnakes, but their rattlesnake-killing prowess is overrated. A friend living in Gold Country called me up excitedly last spring. He’d just seen a kingsnake on his property and was wondering if that meant the rattlesnakes would disappear. I told him not to hold his breath. Kingsnakes occasionally eat rattlesnakes, but they have a wide and varied diet consisting of lizards, amphibians, all sorts of snakes (including their own kind), birds, eggs, and small mammals. In short, they don’t single out rattlesnakes. California kingsnakes (Lampropeltis californiae), the banded, two-toned snakes found throughout most of the state, were until recently considered a subspecies of common kingsnake, one of a handful of snake species found coast to coast.

These temperatures are extremely important to promote healthy thermoregulation. Since the snake is cold blooded it uses its surrounding temperatures to regulate its internal temperature. Lighting Kingsnakes need a total of 3 different lighting systems. The first is going to be a cool burning full-spectrum UVA UVB light bulb, this should be on for 9-12 hours a day. This is going to act as the sun for the Kingsnake, this aids in physical and mental health, as well as allow the snake to recognize its food. It also shows off the beautiful color and shine of the snake. Two extra heat lamps are required for thermal regulation as well.

She leaves the eggs after laying them. About 70 days later, the baby snakes emerge. California Kingsnakes have even been known to eat their own shed skins! The Kingsnake is eaten by hawks, owls, coyotes, opossums, skunks, and other predators. conservation Some people kill snakes because they are afraid that the snakes might hurt them. They do not realize that the snakes are even more afraid of humans than we are of them! Kingsnakes, like many snakes, play an important role in controlling rodent populations.

Given that this risk assessment is confined to the Mediterranean and Steppic bioregions, there is justification for a regional listing approach ONLY. • The species is only known to be invasive in the Canary Islands, the situation there is due to the lack of large ground predators and the complete lack of competing species completely different. There is no reasonable proof that the species could establish in mainland Europe, even though climate and nutritional demands are probably met in the Mediterranean region because of the competition from European snake species. • The impact of introducing a snake species is a region without a natural existing snake population is massive. The European regions where establishment is possible have, with the possible exemption of some islands, already a natural snake population, this means establishment is less likely and impact will most likely be much less. • As noted by Filz et al. (2018), we would support their opinion that: “A complete ban of exotic pet reptiles doesn’t appear as a viable solution to compensate the current methodological errors in predicting and monitoring species invasions. It also ranges into parts of Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, and Baja California. It is found in a wide variety of habitats: forests, woodlands, chaparrals, grasslands, marshes, farmlands, ranches, deserts, and even brushy suburban areas. • Exhibit Location: Zoo to You Collection Characteristics • Length: 2.5-4 feet • The California king snake has smooth, shiny appearing scales that can be ringed, striped, spotted, or any combination of those. There are 2 phases, one with the stripes going across the body (like the one we have), and the other with a stripe going down the body from the head to the tail. • They can be any shade of black or brown, with a lighter color of white or yellow. The head is dark on top with a light area on the center rear. • Lifespan: In the Wild unknown; In Captivity 33 years Behaviors • The California king snake is diurnal (active during the daytime), but when it is hot, they can occasionally become nocturnal (active at night). • They are mostly terrestrial (ground dwellers), but they will climb low branches and shrubs. • California king snakes are usually solitary animals except when they hibernate during cold weather. • When disturbed, California king snakes can give off a strong musk odor.

Duke DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND SEASONALITY Scarce to abundant, the California kingsnake is found throughout California including Santa Catalina Island off the southern coast. It is absent only from the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada and from the extreme northwestern and northeastern portions of the state. Widely distributed, and occurring in nearly all habitats (exclusive of high mountains), the kingsnake is most abundant in valley-foothill riparian situations and in other habitats occurring in the vicinity of irrigated agriculture. Elevation sea level to 2100 m (7000 ft). SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: Kingsnakes feed on the ground, in mammal burrows, and under surface objects. Primary foods appear to be lizards and snakes (rattlesnakes exhibit a distinctive defensive postural response when in the presence of kingsnakes; see Carpenter and Gillingham 1975). Large numbers of small rodents, birds, and bird eggs are also taken. Kingsnakes have also been reported to swallow their own shed skins (Keown 1973). Cover: When inactive, kingsnakes seek cover in rodent burrows and under surface objects such as flat rocks, logs, and boards. At montane localities with cold winters, individuals hibernate in rodent burrows and in deep fissures in rock accumulations. Reproduction: The eggs of the eastern kingsnake are thought to be laid in loose well-aerated soil. Cavities in stable talus, abandoned rodent burrows, and rotten logs may also be used as nest sites.

These snakes typically are diurnal, wide-foraging generalists and ingest prey head-first. Twenty-nine percent of 447 diet items were mammals, 29% were snakes, 25% were lizards, 11% were birds, 4% were squamate eggs, 1% were unidentified squamates, and 1% were amphibians. We detected no differences in diet based on kingsnake sex or color pattern, nor evidence of individual specialization. Rodents, lizards, and birds were eaten more frequently by larger individuals; snakes were eaten with similar frequency independent of predator size.
