LYCRA, LEGS, AND LEGITIMACY: PERFORMANCES OF FEMININE POWER IN TWENTIETH CENTURY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Quincy Thomas A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2018 Committee: Jonathan Chambers, Advisor Francisco Cabanillas, Graduate Faculty Representative Bradford Clark Lesa Lockford © 2018 Quincy Thomas All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jonathan Chambers, Advisor As a child, when I consumed fictional narratives that centered on strong female characters, all I noticed was the enviable power that they exhibited. From my point of view, every performance by a powerful character like Wonder Woman, Daisy Duke, or Princess Leia, served to highlight her drive, ability, and intellect in a wholly uncomplicated way. What I did not notice then was the often-problematic performances of female power that accompanied those narratives. As a performance studies and theatre scholar, with a decades’ old love of all things popular culture, I began to ponder the troubling question: Why are there so many popular narratives focused on female characters who are, on a surface level, portrayed as bastions of strength, that fall woefully short of being true representations of empowerment when subjected to close analysis? In an endeavor to answer this question, in this dissertation I examine what I contend are some of the paradoxical performances of female heroism, womanhood, and feminine aggression from the 1960s to the 1990s. To facilitate this investigation, I engage in close readings of several key aesthetic and cultural texts from these decades. While the Wonder Woman comic book universe serves as the centerpiece of this study, I also consider troublesome performances and representations of female power in the television shows Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the film Grease, the stage musical Les Misérables, and the video game Tomb Raider. -

SHAWN PATTERSON SELECTED CREDITS MAKING APES: THE ARTISTS WHO CHANGED FILM (2019) THE LEGO MOVIE (2014) SUPERMANSION (2015-2019) THE ADVENTURES OF PUSS IN BOOTS (2015-2018) ROBOT CHICKEN (2010-2014) BIOGRAPHY Shawn Patterson is an Academy Award, Emmy and Grammy nominated Composer, Songwriter and Music Producer. Originally hailing from Athol, Massachusetts, Patterson's lifelong passion for music started with his late father, Ronald Patterson, a multi-instrumentalist musician. As a child, Shawn was exposed to television shows whose music scores (and sometimes songs) became engrained in his head: ‘Star Trek’, ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’, ‘Lost In Space’, and ‘Starsky & Hutch’. But it was his introduction to John Williams' legendary scores of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Superman’ that initiated Patterson's profound life long journey to become a score composer and a part of cinematic storytelling through music. Shawn attended Berklee College of Music and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; where he was selected to study privately and perform with legendary jazz musicians Dr. Billy Taylor and Max Roach. As a jazz, blues, rock guitarist and bandleader, Shawn played shows and lead various bands (including trio, duo and solo settings) while writing compositions in his free time. In 1987, Patterson attended and graduated from the Grove School of Music in Studio City, California. While attending Grove, Shawn studied orchestration and arranging privately with Roger Steinman. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1990, Patterson studied composition and orchestration privately with legendary Los Angeles Composer and Orchestrator, Jack Smalley. Patterson soon found success writing music for film trailers around town. Over the years, Shawn has composed score and written songs in an enormous wide range of styles for a number of award winning episodic television shows. -

SURVEILLANCE, SOCIAL ORDER, AND GENDERED SUBVERSIONS IN BATMAN COMICS, 1986-2011 by © Aidan Diamond (Thesis) submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master’s of Arts Department of English Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador !ii ABSTRACT Batman is “the world’s most popular superhero.”1 An icon of American excep- tionalism, Batman has been featured in radio programmes, television shows, musicals, and more films than any other superhero since his 1939 comic book inception. While Batman has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other superhero, sustained scholarly inquiry of his vigilante infrastructures and their effects upon those Batman deems criminal is scarce; instead, critical readers prefer to interrogate his fascist under- tones. This thesis aims to ameliorate this lack of scholarship by interrogating Batman’s regulatory surveillance assemblage, particularly how it is negotiated and subverted by Barbara Gordon/Oracle and Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Using Foucault’s theories of crimi- nality, Lyon’s articulation of surveillance, Haraway’s cyborg hybridizations, Mulvey’s deconstruction of the gaze, and Butler’s and Tasker’s respective conceptualizations of gender, I argue that female characters problematize and complicate the otherwise unques- tioned authority of Batman’s surveillance assemblage in the 1986-2011 DC continuity. 1 “Batman Day Returns!” DC Comics. 14 June 2016, www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/06/14/batman-day- returns. ENG 1131: POLITICS OF THE SUPERHERO, SPRING 2019 ENG 1131: Politics of the Superhero (Class #13890) Instructor: Megan Fowler MWF Period 5; W Period E1-E3 Email: [email protected] Office: Turlington 4321 University of Florida Office hours: W Period 6-7 COURSE DESCRIPTION The superhero has had a lasting cultural legacy starting from the archetype’s 1930s origin and continuing with an almost overwhelming proliferation of superhero media into the 21st century. This course will examine that legacy, focusing on the political and cultural contexts that shape superheroes and how superhero narratives respond to these contexts. In addition, as this is a Writing Through Media course, we will be exploring the myriad of different mediums creators utilize for superhero stories, including comics, animation, blockbuster films, television shows, radio shows, etc. This course will begin by introducing some of the pulp heroes that served as superhero antecedents, such as Zorro, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and the Phantom. We will then explore the relationship between the superhero and American identity, focusing on the emergence of the Golden Age of superhero comics with characters such as Superman and Captain America. This exploration will demonstrate the cultural legacy of Jewish identity on the origin of the superhero, the pivotal role superhero comics played in WWII, and the continued political relevance of these characters in contemporary American culture. The next unit will center around superheroines, beginning with Wonder Woman and the influence of first wave feminism on her genesis. Moving into the contemporary, we will look at a number of postmodern takes on the superheroine in a range of formats from independent webcomics to anime to television. -
