The Significance of Batman in American Society: A Socio-Historical Study of David S. Goyer’s Batman Begins. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Sanata Dharma University, 2008. Batman Begins is the 5th Batman movie since 1989. The character of Batman is based on its comics strips. The story of Batman Begins was written on its movie script tells about a man who turns himself to be a crime fighter named Batman after he witnesses the murder of his parents which takes place in front of him when he was a child. In this thesis, which analyzes Batman Begins movie script, there are two questions formulated as the guidelines in the research. The first question is to explore the characteristics of Batman. The second is to find out the significance of Batman in American Society. The writer applies the socio-historical approach in analyzing Batman Begins movie script as the object of the study. This library research is supported by the books, articles, and other related sources. The analysis shows that the characteristics of Batman are built from his childhood memory of the murder of his parents that took place in front of him. This incident makes Bruce Wayne has a will to fight the crimes and injustice in Gotham City. Bruce turns himself to be a crime fighter named Batman as the symbol of his will. Talking about the representation of Batman in American society is also talking about Bruce Wayne as Batman’s alter ego. The significance of Batman in American Society is the representation of hopes and dream of the Americans which is well known as the American Dream and we can see them through Batman and Bruce Wayne. In this thesis, American Dream is described as a successful and satisfying life which is translated as economic prosperity, having the technology and gadgets, and automobiles. ix PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ABSTRAK SETIO PUTRO MARDIKO. The Significance of Batman in American Society: A Socio-Historical Study of David S. Goyer’s Batman Begins. Yogyakarta: Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2008. Batman Begins adalah film Batman kelima sejak 1989. Karakter Batman berdasarkan komik tentang Batman. I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Literature cannot be separated from the life of human beings. Generally, literature describes the reality of human life. In other words, literature is an imitation of human life. Literary works usually tell about politics, economy, social life, and culture which are happened in the era when those works are written. Literary works contain many things which can be analyzed or studied. There must be some things which we can learn about in them. Literature itself is any kind of writing that,

  • The Arena Spectacular from Ben Hur Live to Isles of Wonder
The Arena Spectacular from Ben Hur Live to Isles of Wonder: Adaptation, Post-cinema and the Postcivil Richard Whitby PhD Humanities and Cultural Studies London Consortium Birkbeck, University of London The work presented in this thesis is all my own Richard Whitby 1st June 2016 2 Abstract What is an ‘arena spectacular’ and why has this genre of live entertainment gained international popularity in the twenty-first century? This study looks at three arena spectaculars: Ben Hur Live, Batman Live and Walking with Dinosaurs Live – all adapted from film or TV productions and performed in London’s O2 Arena between 2007 and 2012. I contextualise the shows with the work of Cirque du Soleil, the Millennium Dome and the city of Las Vegas. However, I argue that the format reached its fullest expression in Britain with the opening ceremony to the London 2012 Olympics, Danny Boyle’s Isles of Wonder. This study proposes that there are specific affective and economic factors within neoliberal and post-cinematic society that make the spatialised, live and ‘unmediated’ performance of a known image or hypertext into an attractive commodity. The arena spectacular should be understood via post-cinematic image-making and the fluidity with which images move from screen, to site and back will be explored here as a commercial process of ‘remediation’. An aggregate of older devices and media that seems to be defined in heterotopic contradistinction to a digital media regime, this format can be explained through contemporaneous qualities of public space, immaterial labour, government and consumption. This analysis is an attempt at grasping the ‘offer’ of these products – through their advertising, merchandise and the shows themselves.

  • “Why So Serious?” Comics, Film and Politics, Or the Comic Book Film As the Answer to the Question of Identity and Narrative in a Post-9/11 World
ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. The results were analyzed by critically examining the source material, with a cultural criticism emerging regarding the progression of this subgenre of motion pictures as meaningful work. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Miami University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of Communications Mass Communications Area by Kyle Andrew Moody Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2009 Advisor ___________________ Dr. Bruce Drushel Reader ___________________ Dr. Ronald Scott Reader ___________________ Dr. David Sholle TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS .......................................................................................................................... • Batman Year One Proprosal by Larry and Andy
BATMAN YEAR ONE PROPROSAL BY LARRY AND ANDY WACHOWSKI The scene is Gotham City, in the past. A party is going on and from it descends Thomas Wayne with his wife Martha, and son Bruce. They are talking, with Bruce chatting away about how he wants to see The Mark of Zorro again. Obviously they have just come from a movie premiere. As they turn a corner to their car, they are met by a hooded gunman who tries holding them up. There is a struggle and the Wayne parents are murdered in a bloodbath. Bruce is left there, when he is met by a police officer. There is a screech and a bat flies overhead... Twenty years have passed. Bruce is now twenty‐eight and quite dynamic. The main character has been travelling the world, training for a war on crime, to avenge his parents' deaths. He is at the Ludlow International Airport, where his butler Alfred picks him up. The two drive to Wayne Manor, just outside of Gotham. Bruce watches the city from the distance. The scene moves to downtown Gotham, where Bruce is wearing a hockey mask and black clothes. A fight breaks out between him and a pimp which leads to Bruce escaping to a rotting building. Bleeding badly, he doesn't know whether to continue his crusade against crime. A screech fills the area and a bat dives at him, knocking him onto an old chair. Bruce realises his destiny... The opening credits feature Bruce at Wayne Manor, slamming down a hammer on scrap metal, moulding it into shape.

STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

  • Domestic Servants Personal Lives
Explore More Domestic Servants Personal Lives In their leisure time, domestic servants likely enjoyed the same hobbies and pleasures as people in other jobs during this era. Sewing, reading, playing musical instruments, chatting over tea, or having evening gatherings in their employer’s kitchen or servants’ hall were common diversions, and may have occurred here at Lucknow. A space like the servants' hall, set aside solely for the enjoyment and rest of the servants, would have been a luxury that existed in only the wealthiest homes. Though the servants’ hall was a spot to rest and have a meal, note that the intercom, telephone, and home alarm system were in this space so a servant’s break might be frequently interrupted. For many servants in the early 20th century, Sunday would have been a typical day off to attend church, a local festival, or perhaps go to the movies. Unfortunately, domestic service workers battled the social stigma attached to their job titles, a problem which had persisted for centuries. Service was considered by some to be a disgraceful and dishonorable profession. For the most part, its workers endured a low social status in American society. A group of domestic servants, probably early 1920s. MORE ON OTHER SIDE Explore More Domestic Servants Personal Lives We don’t know for sure what it was like to live and work at Lucknow as a domestic servant, but first person accounts from people in domestic service during this era, as well as historic documents and photographs, help illustrate the experience. By the twentieth century, domestic servants had more personal freedom than they had in previous eras.
