EI Dia del Salvadoreno Salvadoran Day

WHEREAS, the aftermath of 40 years of internal political turmoil forced hundreds of thousands of to flee EI Salvador, seeking peace and security in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Salvadoran constitute a significantly growing population in the nation; with more than 275,000 Salvadoran Americans making their home in California, with the majority residing in the City of Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, the history of our nation and California is a rich and enduring tapestry woven with the threads of many remarkable lives, cultures, and events, and the lives, work, and artistry of Salvadoran Americans have added strength, vitality, and purpose to that tapestry; and

WHEREAS, the maturing Salvadoran Ameri~~ community continues to make great economic and cultural contributions to daily life in this state; and

WHEREAS, many of these. admirable individuals actively participate in the state educational system, further promoting their sense''ofAmerican pride within the California community; and

WHEREAS, the strengths ofthe Salvadoran American culture can be preserved and passed on to future generations; and

WHEREAS, Salvadoran American families, communities, and the generations that follow are committed to maintain both Salvadoran and American cultures, while promoting cultural interchange; and

WHEREAS, free of prejudices and as proud men and women, Salvadoran Americans participate in and contribute to the integration of the social, educational, professional, and political arena; and

WHEREAS, on August 6, 1525, the official founding of Villa de was declared in the Valle de Las Hamacas (Valley of the Hanrmocks) where the indigenous ancestors of EI Salvador fought historic battles against the submission and abuse of Spanish colonialism in order to preserve the life and liberty of the Cuscatleco population; and

WHEREAS, El Dia del Salvadoreno has become the national day of celebration in ; and

WHEREAS, rhe members of the Salvadoran American National Association (SANA) on behalf of Salvadoran American individuals, families, organizations, and communities in cities and states across the nation, wish to share the establishment of a nationally recognized and celebrated El Dia del Salvadoreno in the United States of America, beginning August 6, 2002, with the desire that this day be celebrated by all generations that follow; and

WHEREAS, Salvadoran American families should have an established day to acknowledge the contribution and value of their culture; and

. JUL 29 2009 (e, WHEREAS, August 6 has already become the day of recognition for Salvadorans celebrated throughout the City of Los Angeles;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Los Angeles hereby recognizes the historical and cultural implications of this day in the Salvadoran community, and hereby declares August 6,2009 as "EI Dia del Salvadoreno" (Salvadoran Day) in recognition of all Salvadorans for their hard work and dedication, and their contributions to the stability and well-being of the people of California, and to the California economy.
