W. MARC BERNSAU COVER STORY GENE THERAPY’S BREAKOUT MOMENT The DNA-based therapeutic approach has returned to the forefront of biotech, with local companies leading the way

BY DON SEIFFERT | [email protected] he idea to replace disease-causing genes in patients with so- called “corrected” versions of genes has been around for decades, but it’s only in the past few years that it’s seen a resurgence in popularity among biotechs and investors. Today, some of the area’s biggest biotech firms, including Genzyme Corp. and Biogen Idec, have programs investigating the use of gene therapies to address various diseases, while smaller companies such as bluebird bio and Voyager are wholly devoted to it. TStill, the field is still in the early innings: According to a report this month by pharmaceutical consulting firm Roots Analysis, there are five approved gene therapies in the world — four in Asia and a fifth was approved in Europe. U.S. companies working in gene therapy raised $600 million in venture capital during the 15-month period from January 2013 to April 2014, and the market for such therapies is expected to be worth $11 billion by 2025, according to the Roots report. W. MARC BERNSAU The Boston Business Journal hosted a panel just before International Rare BBJ BioFlash editor Don Seiffert, left, moderated a panel on the topic of gene Disease Day on Feb. 28 to ask experts from Genzyme, Voyager and Third Rock therapy on Feb. 26 that featured Seng Cheng, vice president of Genetic Diseases Ventures about what’s causing the field’s surge in interest and what promise Science at Genzyme; Steven Paul, CEO of Voyager Therapeutics; and Jim it might hold for the future of the pharmaceutical industry.
