The average concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and PM10-2.5 at Sinhagad were 35.8, -3 14.1 and 21.7 µg m , respectively. The average ratio of PM2.5/PM10 (0.39) suggested that PM10 at study area is dominated by primary particulate emissions by natural activities. In PM10, anions and cations contributed 33% and 67%, whereas in + - 2+ PM2.5, these were 43% and 57%. In both PM10 and PM2.5, contribution of marine components, viz. Na , Cl and Mg were found to be 58% and 49%, respectively reflecting Arabian Sea is the major source of these components. The fraction of the chemical component, which remains after deducting the sea and crust fractions, has been considered as of anthropogenic origin. Major contribution observed was from marine sources [PM2.5 (43%) and PM10 (53%)]; followed by crustal sources [PM2.5 (25%) and PM10 (30%)]; and then anthropogenic sources [(PM2.5 (32%) and PM10 (17%)]. The King of Forts: Rajagd Fort The great Rajgad Fort (literal meaning Ruling Fort). It was formerly known as Murumdev until 1654 when its name changed to “Rajgad”. This fort is one of the 17 forts that Shivaji Maharaj kept when he signed the Treaty of Purandar.     Chapter 1: Socio-Economic Profile of Maharashtra Introduction It is believed that the words Marathi and Maharashtra originated from “Maharathi”- meaning "the great charioteer." Maharathis denoted a strong "fighting force" in the ancient Maratha history. Although the region is believed to have gained prominence as early as in 90 A.D., the first inscription of Maharashtra appeared way back in the seventh century. In the sixteenth century, regional Muslim powers ruled the Deccan region, which basically served the Mughal Empire. Shivaji Bhosle, born in 1627, was the founder of the Maratha Empire and engaged in a lifelong struggle against the Mughals to establish supremacy of the Maratha kingdom. By 1680, the year of his death, nearly the entire Deccan region belonged to the Marathas. In 1800s, Pune city, the capital of Marathas, was considered to be one of the best built native towns in India. The first step towards establishing a municipal government in this city was taken in 1856, when the Pune Municipality came into existence under the Act of 1850. At the time of the Indian Independence in 1947, western Maharashtra and present-day Gujarat were joined as Bombay state. The eastern districts were then a part of the State of Hyderabad, but were later added to Bombay in 1956. The present state of Maharashtra was formed in 1960 when the Marathi and Gujarati linguistic areas of former Bombay state were separated. Bombay city, presently known as Mumbai, became the capital of the new state. In Maharashtra one can find the relics of about 175 forts, which are linked to the great Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who is believed to have either built or fortified them.

    Description of the Region (Geographical extent, topography, climate, and vegetation) The Maharashtra state is about 800 km east-west and 700 km north-south, an irregular dentate pentagon, lying between 22" r-16 " 4' north latitude and 72 " 6'-80 " 9' east longitude, covering an area of 3,07,690 sq km. It is limited to the west by the Arabian Sea, making a long coastline of 720 km. by Goa and Karnataka to the south, by Andhra Pradesh on the south-east, and Madhya Pradesh on the north, and Gujarat to its north-west (Map 1). Western Ghats or Sahyadri separate coastal strip of Konkan from rest of the plateau and thereby altitude ranges from mean sea level to about 1200 m on Western Ghats (with some highest peaks in the range like Kalsubai- 1654 m, Mahabaleshwar- 1382 m) and about 200-900 m over the rest. Average rainfall in the state varies from 250 cm in Konkan to 60-75 cm in Marathwada and again increasing to 150 cm towards eastern most part of Maharashtra that is Vidarbha. It forms a large part of Indian Peninsula. Similarly temperature varies between I5"C-47''C. Relative humidity fluctuate between 15% to 90%. Nearly 21% of the geographical area is under forest. Physiography Physiographically the state is divided into 5 divisions 1. Konkan, 2. Deccan or Desh, 3. Khandesh, 4. Marathwada and 5. Vidarbha (Map 2). Konkan, a narrow coastal strip of the west of Sahyadris, varies between 27-48 km in breadth and 800 km in length from Goa to Tapi Basin.
