ZooKeys 565: 1–28. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.565.6877 Abstract In the last decades, several expeditions were organized in Europe by the researchers of the Hungarian Natural History Museum to collect snails, aquatic insects and soil animals (mites, springtails, nematodes, and earthworms). In this study, scale insect (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) specimens extracted from Hun- garian Natural History Museum soil samples (2970 samples in total), all of which were collected using soil and litter sampling devices, and extracted by Berlese funnel, were examined. From these samples, 43 scale insect species (Acanthococcidae 4, Coccidae 2, Micrococcidae 1, Ortheziidae 7, Pseudococcidae 21, Putoidae 1 and Rhizoecidae 7) were found in 16 European countries. In addition, a new species belong- ing to the family Pseudococcidae, Brevennia larvalis Kaydan, sp. -

Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

XMFennahius+: A new genus of KINNARIDAE (Hemiptera - Fulgoroidea) common to Mauritius and Reunion. The KINNARIDAE show affinities with the CIXIIDAE not merely in their general overall resemblance, but in a number of morphological points to which attention has already been drawn by Muir and other workers, e.g., Metcalf, Fennah, Synave. Conventionally separated from one another by wing-venation, the quite dissimilar structure of the male genitalia confirms that the difference is of familial rank. The presence of wax-producing areas on the sixth, seventh and eighth tergites (vide Plate 18f - top left preparation) of the adult female is a character shared with the MEENOPLIDAE but not the CIXIIDAE. It is rather unfortunate that the members of the family have never been the subject of a special study. Examination of some of their characters (e.g., ? genitalia and text) suggests that in many features they present significant departures from the standard fulgoroid pattern. The presence of a large bursa-copulatrix and reduced valvulae (vide Plate 18b) in Paramicrixia diaphana makes investigation of the live insect highly desirable. MALUMPHY The Food and Environment Research Agency, Sand Hutton, York YO41 1LZ, UK [email protected] ABSTRACT This is the first account of the scale insects and whiteflies (Hemiptera: Coccoidea and Aleyrodoidea) of Bedfordshire, based primarily on samples collected by the author and records obtained from the Royal Horticultural Society. Collection details for 34 species of scale insect (27 native and naturalised species, seven introduced species established on indoor plantings) and eight species of whitefly (six native and naturalized, two introduced species established on indoor plantings) are provided. INTRODUCTION National and regional checklists are essential as baseline data from which faunistic changes due to factors such as climate change and international trade can be monitored and accurately assessed. The purpose of this communication is to record the scale insects and whiteflies (Hemiptera: Coccoidea and Aleyrodoidea) found in Bedfordshire (Watsonian Vice County 30), based primarily on samples collected by the author and unpublished records obtained from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The latter records are mostly based on samples submitted by RHS members to the RHS Advisory Services for identification. A small number of samples were collected by the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) of Defra during statutory plant health inspections at commercial nurseries, and a few records were received in response to an illustrated article on the scale insects of Bedfordshire posted on the Bedfordshire Natural History Society (BHNS) website in June 2009 (http://www.bnhs.org.uk/). -

MOLECULAR PHYLOGENETICS AND EVOLUTION Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 25 (2002) 43–52 www.academicpress.com A preliminary phylogeny of the scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea) based on nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA Lyn G.Cook, * Penny J.Gullan, 1 and Holly E.Trueman 2 School of Botany and Zoology, The Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 0200, Australia Received 9 July 2001 Abstract Scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccoidea) are a speciose and morphologically specialized group of plant-feeding bugs in which evolutionary relationships and thus higher classification are controversial.Sequences derived from nuclear small-subunit ribosomal DNA were used to generate a preliminary molecular phylogeny for the Coccoidea based on 39 species representing 14 putative families.Monophyly of the archaeococcoids (comprising Ortheziidae, Margarodidae sensu lato, and Phenacoleachia) was equivocal, whereas monophyly of the neococcoids was supported.Putoidae, represented by Puto yuccae, was found to be outside the remainder of the neococcoid clade.These data are consistent with a single origin (in the ancestor of the neococcoid clade) of a chromosome system involving paternal genome elimination in males.Pseudococcidae (mealybugs) appear to be sister to the rest of the neococcoids and there are indications that Coccidae (soft scales) and Kerriidae (lac scales) are sister taxa.The Eriococcidae (felt scales) was not recovered as a monophyletic group and the eriococcid genus Eriococcus sensu lato was polyphyletic. This paper presents the results of a zoogeographical analysis of the scale insects from the following countries: Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The number of species collected so far is 92 in 49 genera. The fauna is divided into the following zoogeographical groups: Palearctic, 56.5%, Holarctic, 18.5%, species from 2–3 zoogeographic regions, 10.9%. and Cosmopolitan, 14.1%. Comparative Cytogenetics 9(3): 335–422. doi: 10.3897/ CompCytogen.v9i3.4930 Abstract Parallel trends of chromosomal evolution in Aphidococca are discussed, based on the catalogue of chro- mosomal numbers and genetic systems of scale insects by Gavrilov (2007) and the new catalogue for aphids provided in the present paper. To date chromosome numbers have been reported for 482 species of scale insects and for 1039 species of aphids, thus respectively comprising about 6% and 24% of the total number of species. Such characters as low modal numbers of chromosomes, heterochromatinization of part of chromosomes, production of only two sperm instead of four from each primary spermatocyte, physiological sex determination, "larval" meiosis, wide distribution of parthenogenesis and chromosomal races are considered as a result of homologous parallel changes of the initial genotype of Aphidococca ancestors.
