Linden Lab, creator of the online virtual world Second Life, said Wednesday it was laying off 30 percent of its staff. Linden Lab did not reveal how many people it was letting go as part of what it called a "strategic restructuring," but the San Francisco-based company reportedly has more than 300 employees. Linden Lab said it would combine its product and engineering divisions and consolidate its software development teams in North America. Mark Kingdon, Linden Lab's chief executive, said the company plans to create an Internet browser- based virtual world experience, eliminating the need to download software, and extend Second Life into social networks. Virtual Worlds Players – Consumers Or Citizens? Edina Harbinja University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, [email protected]
INTERNET POLICY REVIEW Journal on internet regulation Volume 3 | Issue 4 Virtual worlds players – consumers or citizens? Edina Harbinja University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, [email protected] Published on 15 Oct 2014 | DOI: 10.14763/2014.4.329 Abstract: This article questions the preconceived notions that participants in virtual worlds are essentially consumers. Building on the existing scholarship around virtual worlds and notwithstanding the current character of virtual worlds, this paper explores aspects of End User Licence Agreements and notes the unfairness of their provisions, particularly the imbalance between user and developer interests governed by such contracts. It argues that the contracts cannot be regulated with consumer protection legislation, as interests such as property or intellectual property are beyond the scope of consumer protection regimes. Finally, recognising the phenomenon of constitutionalisation of virtual worlds, the article argues for stronger regulatory solutions in this domain, in order to strike a more appropriate balance between competing interests in virtual worlds. Second Life Taskforce Recommendations Item #29 YALSA Board of Directors Meeting ALA Annual Conference, Anaheim June 26 – July 2, 2008
YALSA Board of Directors – Annual 08 Topic: Second Life Taskforce Recommendations Item #29 YALSA Board of Directors Meeting ALA Annual Conference, Anaheim June 26 – July 2, 2008 Topic: Second Life Taskforce Recommendations Background: At the 2007 Annual meeting the Board voted to establish a taskforce to “explore the possibility of a YALSA presence in Second Life and report back to the YALSA Board of Directors at Midwinter 2008. Issues to explore include: cost, member interest in and use of Second Life, other ALA Division’s (or similar organizations) use of Second Life, possible content and types of participation and relevance to the YALSA mission.” Their final report is provided below. Action Required: Discussion How the Task Force operated to complete the charge: Since the Task Force was not fully formed until November 2007, and the results from the member survey were completed just prior to Midwinter, we were given an extension on the due date of this report. Task Force members met in Second Life and exchanged emails to discuss the work of the group. Then members divided up the responsibilities as outlined in the charge of the Task Force, and agreed to report findings to the group via email or a shared Google Document until the YALSA wiki (http://wikis.ala.org/yalsagroups/index.php/Second_Life) was set up. Results from the findings: Costs: An individual interested in participating in Second Life can register for a basic account at no charge. A basic account does not come with a land plot but has all the basic essentials needed to function in SL (avatar with default clothing). -
Opensimulator and Unity As a Shared Development Environment
OpenSimulator and Unity as a Shared Development Environment Fumikazu Iseki Austin Tate Tokyo Univ. of Info. Sci., Dept. of Informatics, AIAI, School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh, Japan United Kingdom Daichi Mizumaki Kohei Suzuki Tokyo Univ. of Info. Sci., Dept. of Informatics, The Daiichi Information Systems Co., Ltd., Japan Japan Abstract We developed a conversion system to load OpenSimulator Archive (.oar) files into Unity. This system allows the user to load world data jointly created in OpenSimulator into Unity on a region-by-region basis, and to ultimately output the data from Unity in a variety of formats. These features allow us to treat the pairing of OpenSimulator and Unity as a shared development environment, which simplifies the low-cost creation of 3D spatial visualization data. 1. Introduction. Several approaches exist to construct three-dimensional (3D) worlds in a computer system at low cost. Representative methods include using the systems Unity [1] and Unreal [2], which are so-called game engines. Alternatively, one can use so-called metaverse systems. At present, the widest used metaverse-type examples of 3D virtual space (virtual world) platforms are Second Life™ [3], offered by Linden Lab, and OpenSimulator (also known as OpenSim) [4], which is an open-source platform largely compatible with Second Life. These game engines and metaverse platforms each have advantages and limitations. For example, Second Life and OpenSimulator allow users to construct 3D spaces through collaborative efforts over a network using in-world real time content editing tools, while Unity and Unreal allow the conversion of created 3D spatial data for use in webpages and applications so that general users can easily reference it. -
Kinect Avatars in Real Time
MANUSCRIPT ACCEPTED BY IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CYBERNETICS, SUBMITTED OCTOBER 16, 2012 1 Create Avatars using Kinect in Real-time Angelos Barmpoutis, Member, IEEE Abstract Real-time 3D reconstruction of the human body has many applications in anthropometry, telecommunications, gaming, fashion, and other areas of human-computer interaction. In this paper a novel framework is presented for reconstructing the 3D model of the human body from a sequence of RGB-D frames. The reconstruction is performed in real time while the human subject moves arbitrarily in front of the camera. The method employs a novel parameterization of cylindrical-type objects using Cartesian tensor and b-spline bases along the radial and longitudinal dimension respectively. The proposed model, dubbed tensor body, is fitted to the input data using a multi-step framework that involves segmentation of the different body regions, robust filtering of the data via a dynamic histogram, and energy-based optimization with positive-definite constraints. A Riemannian metric on the space of positive-definite tensor splines is analytically defined and employed in this framework. The efficacy of the presented methods is demonstrated in several real-data experiments using the Microsoft Kinect sensor. - The full article can be found at the end of this PDF document. Second Life® – an Opportunity for Virtual Support and Education
Second Life® – An Opportunity for Virtual Support and Education NLLRC Staff October 2015 What is Second Life®? Second Life is a virtual world that was created by Linden Lab in 2003. What is a virtual world? It is similar to the real world we live in except it is accessed by a computer. People are represented as avatars which are digital versions of themselves. The interesting thing about a Second Life avatar is that you can represent yourself however you like. For example, you can represent yourself with or without an amputation. You can choose whether or not you want your avatar to use a prosthetic device or a wheelchair. In Second Life, you have the ability to explore and interact with the virtual world just as you would explore the real world. The difference is that you do not have to leave your home to do so. You are not bound by barriers such as a lack of transportation or difficulty in walking around. You can go for a walk or participate in book clubs, support groups, dance parties and/or socialization events. You can swim, dance and zip line. Live concerts and presentations are held in Second Life. Visually, it is similar to an online game but there are no objectives or goals to guide your use. The possibilities are endless. Second Life can be used as a tool to interact and socialize with your peers. You can spend as much or as little time as you want exploring the virtual world around you. A virtual world, like Second Life, provides an opportunity for real-time interaction with others.
