EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D.: POST-PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS, 1961-69 1962-63 SIGNATURE FILE SERIES DESCRIPTION The 1962-63 Signature File contains materials roughly comparable to the documents found in the 1962 Principal File. It consists of files which the Gettysburg staff decided were no longer needed for future reference. These materials were shipped to Abilene and organized using the same arrangement scheme as the Principal File. Since these files contained many carbon copies of letters which Eisenhower had signed, the series was titled the “Signature File.” The Eisenhower Library staff combined the 1962-63 material into one series. This series is divided into two parts or subseries. The first is a subject, or topical, subseries, containing such categories as business-economics, education, federal government, finance, foreign affairs, gifts, invitations, legislation, politics, private affairs, public relations, speeches, and trips. These categories reflect the main areas of activity of Eisenhower and his office staff. The subject subseries, comprised of twenty-three boxes, is arranged in alphabetical order by name of subject or category. Gifts and invitations are the subjects containing the greatest volume of materials. The second subseries is the thirty-eight box alphabetical file, which is primarily a correspondence file. It is arranged alphabetically by the names of individuals and organizations. Like previous post-presidential series, this file reveals the busy schedule Eisenhower maintained and the large volume of correspondence which he and his staff carried on. This series has considerable correspondence regarding gifts sent to Eisenhower and invitations declined, plus many requests for photographs, autographs, statements, and appearances. Although the bulk of this series consists of fairly routine correspondence, there are numerous letters which discuss important national and international issues. U.S. trade policy, the Common Market, Medicare, People-to-People, Cuba, Eisenhower’s role in the 1962 political campaign, the Kennedy administration, and foreign policy are some of the topics discussed in Eisenhower’s correspondence. Other topics mentioned in this file include fluoridated water, Pennsylvania state politics, World War II, the 1952 campaign, the dedication of the Eisenhower Library, and the National Cultural Center. This series contains correspondence with many former members of the Eisenhower Administration, including Robert Anderson, Ezra Taft Benson, Herbert Brownell, Arthur Burns, Allen Dulles, Arthur Flemming, James Hagerty, J. Edgar Hoover, C.D. Jackson, Fred Seaton, and Bernard Shanley. Other dignitaries, personalities, and political leaders who continued to have correspondence with the ex-president were Frank Carlson, Henry Ford II, Harry Darby, Mark Clark, William Pawley, William Miller, Walter Cronkite, Everett Dirksen, Joyce Hall, Sigurd Larmon, and Charles Percy. The 1962-63 Signature File contains numerous documents which reveal some of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s personal views, policies, and attitudes on a wide variety of topics. Included among these topics are the use of his name, requests for donations, requests for autographs, the exhibiting of his paintings, the use of “ghost written” speeches, honorary memberships, watercolor painting techniques, the endorsing of political candidates, the presidency, Boy Scouts, the role of hard work and luck in his life, and spurious anti-Eisenhower material. Thus, these files offer numerous insights into Eisenhower’s views on personal matters as well as broad issues.
