BIOGRAPHY

After thirty-five years in the Senate representing the citizens of North Dakota, Milton R. Young retired in January 1981. This ended a political career that began with his election as a township supervisor in 1924, and continued with Mr. Young holding an elected office without defeat until his retirement.

Milton R. Young was born at Berlin, North Dakota, in 1897. He graduated from La Moure High School, and attended North Dakota State University and Graceland College. After college Mr. Young operated his Photo 2045 Senator Milton R. Young Photograph Collection Page 2 of 17

father's farm until 1945. He married Malinda Benson in 1919, with whom he raised three sons. She died in 1969, and he later married Patricia Byrne of Bowman, North Dakota. Senator Young died at his retirement home in Sun City, , on May 31, 1983, and was buried at Berlin, N.D. Mr. Young was active in community affairs, serving on school, township, and county AAA boards.

The depression and drought of the late 1920s and 1930s saw an increased interest in politics by , which led to his election to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1932, and to the Senate in 1934. Mr. Young was also one of the key persons in developing the Republican Organizing Committee (ROC) in North Dakota, during the 1940s. With the death of John Moses in 1945, Governor Fred G. Aandahl appointed Milton Young to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat. There he represented the people of North Dakota the remainder of his career, becoming one of the longest serving members in the history of the U.S. Senate. His major committee assignments were the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry committees, and the Appropriations Committee, of which he was the ranking Republican member.

Throughout his long political career, Senator Young was honored by many individuals and organizations with the presentation of photographs, certificates, plaques, and artifacts. Upon his retirement, he presented North Dakota State University with this vast collection to be displayed and made accessible to the people of North Dakota.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Milton R. Young Photograph Collection contains 1,940 photographs, ranging from professionally done portraits to casual snapshots. Upon receipt, the collection was partially catalogued and the photographs were identified. Institute staff, using the identifying information that came with the collection, organized the photographs into three series: Topical, Portrait, and Albums. A number of oversize images are listed in the proper series but are located in Photo Folio 85.

The Topical Series, the largest of the three series, features photographs of committees and fellow congressmen in Washington, D.C., and visiting groups and constituents of North Dakota. Trips to Costa Rica, China, , Egypt, , Germany, , Iraq, Okinawa, , Thailand, , and the Panama Canal are represented, as well as special events taking place both in Washington, D.C., and North Dakota. Also included are Senator Young's office staff and interns as well as numerous presentations to Senator Young from organizations and delegations.

The Portraits Series is composed of 142 formal portraits of fellow senators, congressmen, and dignitaries during Senator Young's tenure in the U.S. Senate. They originally were framed and hung on the walls of Senator Young's office. The frames have been removed and the portraits organized alphabetically by name of the individual.

The album and folders in the Albums Series were also arranged by Senator Young's office staff when received by the Institute. These include A.F. Plant's '63 visit; European trip, 1947; Jhoon Rhee "U.S. Tae Kwon Do Association"; Luke Air Force Day "North Dakota Day of the Eagle," Oct. 1975; Mexico trip, 1948; Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club; University of North Dakota "Appreciation Day" Aug. 26, 1971; Upper Midwest's Recognition of Senator Young's effort on behalf of agriculture; and Western Gear Corporation Ground Breaking, June 8, 1974. There is an album of thirty-six color snapshots of a party honoring Senator Young who was president of the United States Tae Kwan Do Association, presented by Jhoon Rhee. Another album of black and white prints document a party for Senator Young celebrating his 35th Photo 2045 Senator Milton R. Young Photograph Collection Page 3 of 17

anniversary in the U.S. Senate, held March 12, 1980.

The photographs in the folders and some of the albums were taken out for better preservation, and numbered consecutively in the same order as the original albums.

The Folio Series consists of two subseries. The subseries file numbers Folio 85.306 through 85.320 contain images that did not fit in the main photograph collection boxes. However the file titles were integrated into the main Topical Series listing of the finding aid. This series includes photographs of buildings, farms, Indians, Republican leadership, the Riverview Golf Course, Rugby, North Dakota marker, the Senate Appropriations Committee, Skylab II, the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers, the Tongue River watershed, and the U.S. Navy Parachute Team.

The other subseries consists primarily of larger prints as well as prints that were originally in frames when received from Senator Young. For preservation concerns, these prints were removed from the frames. They constitute the Folio 85.1 – 85.31 files. This later subseries is listed at the item level in the Box and Folder List. They have been divided into the following categories: Agriculture, Government, Industry, and North Dakota Scenes.

The Ephemera Series, although does not consist of photographs, came as part of the photographs and artifacts donated by Senator Young. These oversize items are processed as Mss 1596.14. It contains circa seventy separate items, including numerous certificates of appreciation and appointment, awards, several letters, campaign signs and mementoes.
