American Royal Records (K0265); the State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center-Kansas City [After First Mention May Be Abbreviated to SHSMO-KC] THE STATE HISTORCIAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI RESEARCH CENTER-KANSAS CITY K0265 American Royal Records ca. 1899-1991 161 cubic feet, oversize materials, 17 scrapbooks (microfilmed) Organizational records of a premier livestock and horse show, parade, rodeo, and barbeque contest. Contains correspondence and working files, photographs, scrapbooks, magazines, programs, ledgers, motion picture film, videotape, and other items. HISTORY: Following the Civil War and with the advent of the railroads, Kansas City became a leading place for the cattle herders to gather. Stockyards and packing houses became big business. In order to promote various breeds of cattle and to try and better their quality, livestock shows were held. In October 1899, a National Hereford Show was held at the Kansas City Stockyards. The next year, Shorthorn cattle were included in the show. On January 1, 1901, an editorial "Call It the American Royal" was written by Walter Neff, editor of an agricultural newspaper, the Drovers Telegram. Neff wrote the editorial after hearing Dean C. F. Curtiss of Iowa State College say that he thought that the livestock at Kansas City's show was better than livestock he saw at the British Agricultural Royal in England. The new name was given to the 1901 show. Also added that year were other breeds of cattle, plus sheep, swine, poultry and draft horses. For the first time, in 1905 a horse show was part of the American Royal. It was in a tent in the stockyards at night. Over the next several years, the Royal was held in various places including Convention Hall, Electric Park, and the stockyards. In 1922, a building was constructed with money raised by contributions. It burned in February 1925 but was rebuilt and was ready by the fall of 1925. SHSMO-KC April 7, 2015 REVISED K0265 American Royal Records Page 2 The show continued to be held during the Depression years. At the time of World War II, only a small livestock show was held, not the horse show. Even the flooding of the Kaw and destruction in the West Bottoms area in 1951 failed to stop the Royal. The Governors Building was built in the early 1970's and added space for exhibits. With the completion of the Crosby Kemper Memorial Arena in 1974, much of the show was moved there and rodeo activities were added. Along with the Horse Shows which include Quarter Horses, Arabian/Morgans, a 4-H Horse Show, Hunter/Jumpers, and Saddle Horses, and Livestock Show, there is an American Royal parade through downtown Kansas City and the coronation of a queen elected from the Future Farmers of America State Sweethearts. The American Royal is supported by a Board of Governors of almost 1000 members, the BOTARs (Belles of the American Royal) the Saddle and Sirloin Club and many volunteers. PROVENANCE: The American Royal Collection was received from the American Royal Association as accession KA0614 on December 12, 1990. Additions were made on April 18, 1991 as KA0627, December 10, 1991 as KA0662, February 4, 1993 as KA0739, August 5, 1996 as KA0917, and April 5, 2000 as KA1063. Accession KA2256 was received from Kate Anderson on November 4, 2014. Accession KA2274 was received from the Association on April 7, 2015. SELECTED CHRONOLOGY OF POLITICAL PROTESTS AND EVENTS IN LAWRENCE 1960-1973 By Clark H. Coan January 1, 2001 LAV1tRE ~\JCE~ ~')lJ~3lj(~ ~~JGR§~~Frlt 707 Vf~ f·1~J1()NT .STFie~:T LA1JVi~f:NCE! i(At.. lSAG GG044 INTRODUCTION Civil Rights & Black Power Movements. Lawrence, the Free State or anti-slavery capital of Kansas during Bleeding Kansas, was dubbed the "Cradle of Liberty" by Abraham Lincoln. Partly due to this reputation, a vibrant Black community developed in the town in the years following the Civil War. White Lawrencians were fairly tolerant of Black people during this period, though three Black men were lynched from the Kaw River Bridge in 1882 during an economic depression in Lawrence. When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1894 that "separate but equal" was constitutional, racial attitudes hardened. Gradually Jim Crow segregation was instituted in the former bastion of freedom with many facilities becoming segregated around the time Black Poet Laureate Langston Hughes lived in the dty-asa child. Then in the 1920s a Ku Klux Klan rally with a burning cross was attended by 2,000 hooded participants near Centennial Park. Racial discrimination subsequently became rampant and segregation solidified. Change was in the air after World "vV ar II. The Lawrence League for the Practice of Democracy (LLPD) formed in 1945 and was in the vanguard of Post-war efforts to end racial segregation and discrimination. This was a bi-racial group composed of many KU faculty and Lawrence residents. A chapter of Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) formed in Lawrence in 1947 and on April 15 of the following year, 25 members held a sit-in at Brick's Cafe to force it to serve everyone equally.

Beautiful and Damned: Geographies of Interwar Kansas City By Lance Russell Owen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Michael Johns, Chair Professor Paul Groth Professor Margaret Crawford Professor Louise Mozingo Fall 2016 Abstract Beautiful and Damned: Geographies of Interwar Kansas City by Lance Russell Owen Doctor of Philosophy in Geography University of California, Berkeley Professor Michael Johns, Chair Between the World Wars, Kansas City, Missouri, achieved what no American city ever had, earning a Janus-faced reputation as America’s most beautiful and most corrupt and crime-ridden city. Delving into politics, architecture, social life, and artistic production, this dissertation explores the geographic realities of this peculiar identity. It illuminates the contours of the city’s two figurative territories: the corrupt and violent urban core presided over by political boss Tom Pendergast, and the pristine suburban world shaped by developer J. C. Nichols. It considers the ways in which these seemingly divergent regimes in fact shaped together the city’s most iconic features—its Country Club District and Plaza, a unique brand of jazz, a seemingly sophisticated aesthetic legacy written in boulevards and fine art, and a landscape of vice whose relative scale was unrivalled by that of any other American city. Finally, it elucidates the reality that, by sustaining these two worlds in one metropolis, America’s heartland city also sowed the seeds of its own destruction; with its cultural economy tied to political corruption and organized crime, its pristine suburban fabric woven from prejudice and exclusion, and its aspirations for urban greatness weighed down by provincial mindsets and mannerisms, Kansas City’s time in the limelight would be short lived.
