  • For Reunited Foster and Lloyd
Playing with History: Influential Duo Makes Greenville Show ‘Sweet’ for Reunited Foster and Lloyd By Lance Martin Special for the Threadgill Concert Series Count Radney Foster among the fans who will be at the Kenneth Threadgill Concert Series on Feb. 23 in Greenville. While he’ll be performing as part of Foster and Lloyd, a power duo that reunited in 2010 after a 20‐year hiatus, Foster says the other duo on the bill, Chris Hillman and Herb Petersen, are a pair he can’t wait to see. He credits them as major influences on the label‐defying music that made Foster and Lloyd a hit in the late ‘80s. Foster says sharing the stage with Hillman in particular, who was a member of The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Desert Rose Band, will be a thrill. “Chris was such an influence on Foster and Lloyd being both a Byrd and in the Burritos,” Foster said. “If you had to sum up Foster and Lloyd, it is a lot of disparate parts: you’ve got a Beatles influence; you’ve got a Buck (Owens) and Don Rich influence; and you’ve got an Everly Brothers influence. It goes from rockabilly to honky tonk to psychedelia.” Foster remembers being introduced to The Flying Burrito Brothers in the early ‘70s, when he was learning guitar, and soon understood how The Byrds’ “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” album from 1968 “changed all kinds of things for everyone.” “The Burritos, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s ‘Déjà Vu’ record and all those things were just melting folk, and rock and country all together,” Foster says.

  • December 2014 Newsletter
DECEMBER 2014 Newsletter ------------------------------------------------------------------- Yesterday & Today Records P O Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 phone: (02) 95311710 [email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------------------------- Pretty late for a newsletter but it doesn’t matter. I have found that no one really buys from me for Christmas anyway; they buy for their self gratification and to be honest there is NO better reason. Secondly I was fortunate enough to go to the USA on a buying trip spending a bit of time in both Los Angeles and Music City, Nashville. The results as far as buys go are reflected in the newsletter. As far as quality goes there has never been a newsletter to rival this one. Don’t take my word though...check it out. In Nashville I was fortunate to see the Timejumpers and also (for the first time) the Grand Ol Opry which had commenced its winter Ryman Auditorium run. Highlight of the latter was Old Crow Medicine Show. They don’t really do anything new but have borrowed well and are just so entertaining. Vince Gill is now a full time member of the Timejumpers but they are equal opportunity employers, so to speak and Vince is an equal member. Ameripolitan Music Awards Country music, the Nashville mainstream variety, has departed so far from “country” music that some are starting to call “country music” as we know it (not as Nashville promotes it) something else. Well, the great man Dale Watson is anyway. For the past couple of years he has been promoting the Annual Ameripolitan Music Awards.

  • 1 a Conversation with Kim Richey by Frank Goodman
A Conversation with Kim Richey by Frank Goodman (Puremusic 10/2002) A lovely person and a committed and bold artist, Kim Richey just seems to improve with every passing year. She’s already cleared the country pop hurdle on her own terms and has moved on from Nashville to Austin, and to CA to make her best record to date, on the Caspar headlands of Mendocino with the magical Bill Bottrell. Bottrell, one of the keys to Sheryl Crow’s debut smash, seems both able to bring out the absolute best in artists and then capture it on tape. He’s the CA version of Daniel Lanois, and much more my cup of tea. He doesn’t add to, as much as he extracts, and then works with the concentrate. And Kim Richey in concentrate form, it boggles the mind. She’s got that wide-eyed fearless quality, and a genuine, irresistible personality. In her first couple of releases in Nashville, she set the pace for a kind of Country that Mercury was trying to do, but unfortunately it was a little ahead of its time, or ahead of the demographic. Now Country is more pop, but the pop is so weak that it’s like flat Pepsi or bad popcorn. No matter, Kim wrote two #1’s, one for Radney Foster and one for Trisha Yearwood. Richard Bennett produced her eponymous debut and cowriter Angelo her follow through, Bitter Sweet. Her shining, poignant country material was so authentically smart-pop influenced that her pairing with Hugh Padgham (producer of ultimate smart-pop XTC’s English Settlement) made inspired sense for Glimmer, which represented another step in her path.
