On the lower stage, Gracelands, the garish pink Presley mansion with its outrageous chandeliers, is portrayed. Here, on the last day of his life, is "The King", now ageing, bloated, pill-popping and wear ing a purple jumpsuit and sunglasses. He watches his old movies and fumes because one of his trusted "aides" is ex posing his secrets to a newspaperman. In a series of flashbacks, Elvis relives his earlier experiences, the death of the twin brother whom he believes was his alter ego and stronger half, the death of his mother while he was a GI in Ger many, and the adulation poured on him as the lean, sexy king of rock. HiS manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is por trayed as his manipulator, holding a Presley dummy and gloating over the Martin Shaw as the ageing Presley in ARE profits. Relationships to the Bush in Nan Chauncy’s Early Novels for Children SUSAN SHERIDAN AND EMMA MAGUIRE Flinders University The 1950s marked an unprecedented development in Australian children’s literature, with the emergence of many new writers—mainly women, like Nan Chauncy, Joan Phipson, Patricia Wrightson, Eleanor Spence and Mavis Thorpe Clark, as well as Colin Thiele and Ivan Southall. Bush and rural settings were strong favourites in their novels, which often took the form of a generic mix of adventure story and the bildungsroman novel of individual development. The bush provided child characters with unique challenges, which would foster independence and strength of character. While some of these writers drew on the earlier pastoral tradition of the Billabong books,1 others characterised human relationships to the land in terms of nature conservation. In the early novels of Chauncy and Wrightson, the children’s relationship to the bush is one of attachment and respect for the environment and its plants and creatures. Indeed these novelists, in depicting human relationships to the land, employ something approaching the strong Indigenous sense of ‘country’: of belonging to, and responsibility for, a particular environment. Later, both Wrightson and Chauncy turned their attention to Aboriginal presence, and the meanings which Aboriginal culture—and the bloody history of colonial race relations— gives to the land. In their earliest novels, what is strikingly original is the way both writers use bush settings to raise questions about conservation of the natural environment, questions which were about to become highly political. In Australia, the nature conservation movement had begun in the late nineteenth century, and resulted in the establishment of the first national parks. -

With only eight pages of photographs for 761 pages of text, they can hardly even begin to sum up the visual aspects of the management of captive animals. But it is churlish to comment adversely on these minor points when the author has provided us with such an immensely useful desk volume. No one concerned with the care of wild mammals can afford to be without it. DESMOND MORRIS Menagerie Manor, by Gerald Durrell. Hart-Davis, 21s. Those who have been enchanted by Mr. DurrelPs previous animal books will not be disappointed by this one describing the first five years of the Jersey Zoo at Les Augres Manor. It consists of a series of delightfully told anecdotes about the inmates of a very happy zoo. Visiting there last summer I was immediately impressed by the tameness and general well- being of the animals, due, I am certain to the pains which Mr. Durrell and his staff take to get to know each one as an individual; they all recognised and greeted him with unmistakable affection when he passed by. The author is conservation-minded, and he describes the dilemma of the zoo director faced with the offer from a dealer of a young orang-utan. Should he refuse it on the grounds that to accept is to stimulate further demand ? Or should he accept because his zoo offers the best chance of survival for this particular animal ? Until the zoos and conservation authorities have this question worked out and until the recent legislation controlling the import of rare animals in this country becomes effective, the zoo director must be guided by his conscience and balance his altruism against his acquisitive enthusiasm. -
