Barber February 2020 iii Abstract With the aftermath of World War II and the onset of the Cold War, Australia hosted with the UK one of the few global centres dedicated to the research, development and testing of rockets, jets and other long-range weapons, including Britain’s atomic warheads. By the mid 1950s a new purpose-built town had been constructed in the Australian desert, named “Woomera”, with a population of 7,000 at its peak. No expense was spared in establishing the testing grounds, laboratories and infrastructure – which included a security cleared film laboratory and production facilities at Salisbury near Adelaide – to support the Anglo-Australian Joint Project’s research and experimentation. This dissertation examines pioneering work undertaken by women at Woomera and Salisbury within the context of Australia’s broader social history. Women’s roles at Woomera were initially expected to be traditional – supportive wives and mothers. My research features the women who undertook new roles operating the sophisticated kinetheodolites and Vinten cameras that filmed and tracked the rocket firings, and the women referred to as “computers” who assisted in the pre- and post-production process, including data evaluation. Previous studies of Woomera (e.g., Morton, 1989, Southall 1962) exclude any detailed mention of this industrial phenomenon – women as camera operators and data analysts/computers. My dissertation addresses this significant gap in the literature as the first systematic oral history of these secret Cold War undertakings. The gendered aspects, political economy and unique cohort of this research radically challenges the normative assumptions concerning Australian women and workplaces during what is commonly perceived of as a conservative era. Recent scholarship (e.g., Shetterly 2016) in the United States and the United Kingdom has highlighted work of female mathematicians during World War II and the space race. Given the age of these trailblazing women, it is timely that due attention be given to Australia’s “hidden figures”. v This thesis is dedicated to Laurie East, who was the original source of LTD BRG 18 Preliminary Inventory __________________________________________________________________ Edward Woods (1837-1913) arrived in South Australia during 1860 and began working for the architect Edmund Wright. He helped design the GPO and Town Hall before starting out on his own in 1869; his first commission being St. Peter's Cathedral. By 1884, he had been appointed the colony's Architect-in-chief, and was an inaugural member of the S.A. Institute of Architects formed in 1886. Walter Bagot (1880-1963), a grandson of Henry Ayers and a student of St. Peter's College, became articled to Woods in 1899. He later studied architecture in London before entering into partnership with Woods in 1905. The following year, Bagot assisted with the formation of the first school of architecture in Adelaide, under the auspices of the School of Mines. Herbert Jory, James Irwin and Louis Laybourne-Smith joined the practice as partners in ensuing years; Laybourne-Smith (1880-1965) was also Head of the School of Architecture for 40 years and instrumental in its foundation. Woods Bagot have been a very influential in South Australia, with early emphasis on traditional styles and in ecclesiastical architecture. The firm designed Elder House, the Trustee Building, Bonython Hall, Barr Smith Library, the War Memorial, Carrick Hill and a number of churches in Adelaide and the country. Later commissions included John Martins, the Bank of NSW, CML and Da Costa Buildings, ANZ Bank and the Elizabeth City Centre, while more recent examples include Standard Chartered, Commonwealth Bank, Telecom and Mutual Health buildings.

    Your memory Module 1, Unit 1 : Your memory and its tricks Memory: what is it exactly? 2 Introduction There are five major types of memory involving different but interconnected neural networks: ○ working memory (short-term memory at the heart of the network), ○ semantic and episodic memory (two systems of long-term conscious representation), ○ procedural memory (which allows unconscious automatisms) and ○ perceptual memory (sensory related). Knowing the specificities of the memory is an essential first step in order to know how to work on it better. 3 Short-term memory ▣ Short-term memory is the memory of the present. We use it to retain information from 0.5 seconds to 10 minutes after it enters the brain. On average, we are able to memorize seven different elements simultaneously in the short term. We use this type of memory on a permanent basis, for example to retain a telephone number while you dial it. ▣ Short-term memory is the first step in longer-term memorization.     Relationships to the Bush in Nan Chauncy’s Early Novels for Children SUSAN SHERIDAN AND EMMA MAGUIRE Flinders University The 1950s marked an unprecedented development in Australian children’s literature, with the emergence of many new writers—mainly women, like Nan Chauncy, Joan Phipson, Patricia Wrightson, Eleanor Spence and Mavis Thorpe Clark, as well as Colin Thiele and Ivan Southall. Bush and rural settings were strong favourites in their novels, which often took the form of a generic mix of adventure story and the bildungsroman novel of individual development. The bush provided child characters with unique challenges, which would foster independence and strength of character. While some of these writers drew on the earlier pastoral tradition of the Billabong books,1 others characterised human relationships to the land in terms of nature conservation. In the early novels of Chauncy and Wrightson, the children’s relationship to the bush is one of attachment and respect for the environment and its plants and creatures. Indeed these novelists, in depicting human relationships to the land, employ something approaching the strong Indigenous sense of ‘country’: of belonging to, and responsibility for, a particular environment. Later, both Wrightson and Chauncy turned their attention to Aboriginal presence, and the meanings which Aboriginal culture—and the bloody history of colonial race relations— gives to the land. In their earliest novels, what is strikingly original is the way both writers use bush settings to raise questions about conservation of the natural environment, questions which were about to become highly political. In Australia, the nature conservation movement had begun in the late nineteenth century, and resulted in the establishment of the first national parks.

Tasmania . 170 Chapter 1: Introduction In Australia there are four Catholic cathedrals designed in the Romanesque style (Canberra, Newcastle, Port Pirie and Geraldton) and one Anglican cathedral (Parramatta). These buildings are significant in their local communities, but the numbers of people who visit them each year are minuscule when compared with the numbers visiting Australia's most famous Romanesque building, the large Sydney retail complex known as the Queen Victoria Building. God and Mammon, and the Romanesque serves them both. Do those who come to pray in the cathedrals, and those who come to shop in the galleries of the QVB, take much notice of the architecture? Probably not, and yet the Romanesque is a style of considerable character, with a history stretching back to Antiquity. It was never extensively used in Australia, but there are nonetheless hundreds of buildings in the Romanesque style still standing in Australia's towns and cities. Perhaps it is time to start looking more closely at these buildings? They will not disappoint. The heyday of the Australian Romanesque occurred in the fifty years between 1890 and 1940, and it was largely a brick-based style. As it happens, those years also marked the zenith of craft brickwork in Australia, because it was only in the late nineteenth century that Australia began to produce high-quality, durable bricks in a wide range of colours.

Launcher, Guided Missile, Truck Mounted (Malkara) Armoured, 1 Ton, 4x4, Humber Hornet. The Humber 1-Ton trucks were introduced in the early 1950s and were designated by the Fighting Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (FVRDE) as the FV1600 series. They demonstrate how a wide range of variants can be based on a cargo truck. Other 1-Ton trucks of the time, like the Austin K9 (FV16000 series) and Morris MRA/1 (FV16100 series) were based on a commercial chassis, but the Humber was developed exclusively for military use and was the only ‘standardised’ 1-Ton truck. Standardised, means that it has some components that are shared with other standardised vehicles such as Champ, Ferret, Saracen etc. Of all the Humber variants the armoured version known as the Pig saw the longest service and is the most widely known variant. But the most ingenious variant must be the Hornet (FV1620) which became the launch vehicle for the Malkara Anti-Tank Guided Weapon (ATGW). The adoption of Malkara by the British Army spawned a range of other Humber variants to supply, test and repair the Malkara system. It has been said that the Hornet was a rather improvised vehicle and that a better launch vehicle could have been designed.
