Though there's an omnipresent post-war Los Angeles backdrop, the city and the broader Southern California milieu are much less of a character than in Chandler's work. Error rating book. In fact, at the risk of being heretical, Macdonald was a much better novelist than Chandler.

The Chow: Depictions of the Criminal Justice System as a Character in Crime Fiction M ARIANNE WESSON∗ INTRODUCTION have been asked to contribute to this volume some observations about how writers of crime fiction portray the criminal justice system as a I character in their work. It’s a provocative assignment, to be sure, and great fun to think about. The most vivid example that comes to mind is Tom Wolfe’s depiction of the system as a gigantic hungry beast, in The Bonfire of the Vanities.1 His narrative puts us at one juncture in the company of Larry Kramer, Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, watching morosely as the vans that carry pretrial detainees from jail to the courthouse where Kramer practices discharge their cargo into the bowels of the building for morning court dates.

  • Literary Experimentation in the Detective Story Genre
FROM POE TO AUSTER: LITERARY EXPERIMENTATION IN THE DETECTIVE STORY GENRE A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Kelly C. Connelly May, 2009 ABSTRACT Two dominating lines of criticism regarding the detective novel have perpetuated the misconception that detective fiction before the 1960s was a static and monolithic form unworthy of critical study. First, critics of the traditional detective story have argued that the formulaic nature of the genre is antithetical to innovation and leaves no room for creative exploration. Second, critics of the postmodern detective novel have argued that the first literary experiments with the genre began only with post-World War II authors such as Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Paul Auster. What both sets of critics fail to acknowledge is that the detective fiction genre always has been the locus of a dialectic between formulaic plotting and literary experimentation. In this dissertation, I will examine how each generation of detective story authors has engaged in literary innovation to refresh and renew what has been mistakenly labeled as a sterile and static popular genre. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ii TABLE OF CONTENTS……………………………………………………………………………………………… iii INTRODUCTION ………………………………………………………………………………………………………… vi The “Static” and “Sterile” Detective Story …………… vii The Postmodern as Apotheosis of Experimentation ……………………………………………………………………… x The

And there he finds trouble. Also, making this worth the time of any aficionado of MacDonald or detective fiction writing in general is that the last section of this book features beginnings of incomplete stories, fragments that MacDonald never ended up using. I am definitely going to have to get my hands on the Archer short stories, Prashant. If you think the name lacks good taste, consider the books of Felony and Mayhem, publishers of the Midsomer Murders novels by Caroline Graham. Even his regular readers seldom saw a Macdonald denouement coming. The 12 stories here cover the years from to and give a good view of Archer's evolution over the same period. Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Some of "Strangers" Macdonald re-used in one of the best short works of his early period, "Guilt Edged Blonde," and the rest he transformed into "The Ivory Grin," one of his more successful early novels. Me encantan las historias de detectives y aunque estas fueron cortas me interesaron mucho! Sleeping Beauty. • Ross Macdonald's Environmental Crime Fiction
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of East Anglia digital repository Hard-Boiled Ecologies: Ross Macdonald’s Environmental Crime Fiction Author of eighteen novels and three collections of short stories featuring the acerbic, tough talking private-eye Lew Archer, Ross Macdonald’s position in the annals of great American hardboiled crime writers is unquestioned. Macdonald’s texts provide an equally unflinching glimpse into the violence and depravity of post-war California’s criminal underworld, continuing the tradition of the cynical, urban crime novel popularised by writers such as Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Punctuated with narratives of domestic crime, childhood trauma, and ancestral dysfunction, Macdonald’s oeuvre offers a bleak vision of American suburbia, one built upon intergenerational violence, oedipal drama and corporate exploitation. Whilst Macdonald’s connection to the traditions of the American hardboiled has been thoroughly examined, what has often been overlooked in the study of his work are the underlying environmental preoccupations that frequently serve as the background to, or context for, crime. This convergence between ecology and criminality takes on greater significance when read in the context of Macdonald’s own involvement in environmental activism. A leading member of the Santa Barbara Citizens for Environmental Defence, in the late 1950s Macdonald became deeply concerned with the damage being inflicted upon Santa Barbara’s delicate coastal wildlife by the influx of oil-well platforms. Following the eventual eruption of one of these platforms in 1969, Macdonald wrote and campaigned passionately for a ‘new politics of ecology’, one that expressed the public’s bourgeoning ‘moral and economic doubts about the American uses of energy’ (Macdonald 1998, 326).
