Knopf, Marshall McLuhan, Otto Penzler, Reynolds Price, Julian Symons, Diane Wakoski, and Carey McWilliams. Also included are some 400 - 500 letters between Millar and his wife Margaret written during World War II when Millar was an officer in the U.S. Navy. f) Family photographs. g) Family documents including birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, income tax returns, etc. EXTENT: 25 linear feet (59 boxes and 1 oversize folder) and 1.6 linear feet of unprocessed materials RESTRICTIONS: Researchers must receive prior written permission to use the collection from the Trustees of the Margaret Millar Charitable Remainder Unitrust. The collection is partially processed. Please contact Special Collections and Archives for more information. PROVENANCE: Acquired in a series of donations and purchases beginning in 1966. The bulk of the archive was purchased in 1984 with funds provided by the Friends of the UCI Library. PROCESSING HISTORY: This collection is only partially organized and has been described at varying levels of detail. The Lew Archer materials and the correspondence have received the most attention to date. 1 RELATED COLLECTIONS: The library also owns the Matthew J. Bruccoli Collection on Kenneth Millar/Ross Macdonald, containing the research materials used by Professor Bruccoli in writing his two books on Kenneth Millar: Ross Macdonald/Kenneth Millar, a Descriptive Bibliography (1983); and Ross Macdonald (1984), a biography of Kenneth Millar. The papers of Margaret Millar, wife of Kenneth and fellow mystery writer, are also housed in the Department of Special Collections. The department also contains an extensive collection of Kenneth and Margaret Millar's published books issued in various editions and translations, including autographed copies. SERIES NOTES: Series I: Lew Archer. Includes notes, early drafts, typescripts, and galley runs for twelve of the novels written by Ross Macdonald featuring the character Lew Archer. However, not all Lew Archer materials in the collection are currently located in this series: relevant documents may also be found in the "Other Writings" series, while other materials have yet to be processed but may appear on the container list under the heading "Unprocessed". Series II: Other Writings. Includes poems, short stories, plot ideas, character sketches, screenplays, etc. Individual items and/or works have been described but left largely unarranged. As mentioned above, some Lew Archer materials can be found in this series. Series III: Correspondence. Currently arranged in three sequences. The first and largest is the main alphabetic grouping, arranged by correspondent's last name. Letters exchanged between Kenneth Millar and his wife, Margaret Millar, are located in this main sequence, subarranged chronologically. The second sequence is an alphabetic and chronological arrangement with Millar's major publishers and legal firms. The third is a smaller alphabetic sequence of correspondence acquired from Ralph Sipper; many of the same names found here also appear in the main alphabetical sequence. Some correspondence remains unprocessed but may appear on the container list. Unprocessed. Materials in this group vary greatly in the level of descriptive information available. Some boxes are arranged and have labeled folders; others have not been processed at all. In general, materials that have been somewhat arranged or described are listed first. \9spcoll\lit\kmillar 4-1-96 2 BOX# FLDR# CONTENTS I. PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 NEW HARDCOVERS THE KING’S WAR The Friendship of George VI and Lionel Logue During World War II Peter Conradi and Mark Logue Following the New York Times bestselling The King’s Speech, this eagerly anticipated sequel takes King George VI and his speech therapist Lionel Logue into the darkest days of World War II. The broadcast that George VI made to the British nation on the outbreak of war in September 1939—which formed the climax of the multi-Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech—was the product of years of hard work with Lionel Logue, his iconoclastic, Australian- born speech therapist. Yet the relationship between the two men did not end there. Far from it: in the years that followed, Logue was to play an even more important role at the monarch’s side. The King’s War follows that relationship through the dangerous days of Dunkirk and the drama of D-Day to eventual victory in 1945—and beyond. Like the first book, it is written by Peter Con- radi, a London Sunday Times journalist, and Mark Logue, Lionel’s grandson, and again draws on exclusive material from the Logue Archive—the collection of diaries, letters, and other documents left by Lionel and his feisty wife, Myrtle. This gripping narrative provides a fascinating portrait of two men and their respective families—the Windsors and the Logues—as they together face the greatest chal- lenge in Britain’s history. PETER CONRADI is an journalist with the London Sunday Times.

Jan 15 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 161st birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 7 to Jan. 11. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at Annie Moore's, and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morn- ing, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Alan Bradley, co-author of MS. HOLMES OF BAKER STREET (2004), and author of the award-winning "Flavia de Luce" series; the title of his talk was "Ha! The Stars Are Out and the Wind Has Fallen" (his paper will be published in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal). The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's Restaurant was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton and An- drew Joffe) entertained the audience with an updated version of "The Sher- lock Holmes Cable Network" (2000). The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber), which honors the most whimsical piece in The Ser- pentine Muse last year: the winner (Jenn Eaker) received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's traditional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportunities to browse and buy.

By the 1960s he had established himself as a distinct voice in the hardboiled genre. In his Lew Archer series, he conveys the complexity of his characters and settings primarily by the use of metaphors. In his 1966 novel Black Money the device performs three functions. In the case of minor characters, the author uses metaphors to comment on Californian society.

The Chow: Depictions of the Criminal Justice System as a Character in Crime Fiction M ARIANNE WESSON∗ INTRODUCTION have been asked to contribute to this volume some observations about how writers of crime fiction portray the criminal justice system as a I character in their work. It’s a provocative assignment, to be sure, and great fun to think about. The most vivid example that comes to mind is Tom Wolfe’s depiction of the system as a gigantic hungry beast, in The Bonfire of the Vanities.1 His narrative puts us at one juncture in the company of Larry Kramer, Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, watching morosely as the vans that carry pretrial detainees from jail to the courthouse where Kramer practices discharge their cargo into the bowels of the building for morning court dates.
