Bautista is a multi-awarded Filipino poet, fictionist, critic and writer of nonfiction. He received his basic education from Legarda Elementary School (1st Honorable Mention, 1954) and Mapa High School (Valedictorian, 1959). He received his degrees in AB Literature from the University of Santo Tomas (magna cum laude, 1963), MA Literature from St. Louis University, Baguio City (magna cum laude, 1968), and Doctor of Arts in Language and Literature from De La Salle University-Manila (1990). He received a fellowship to attend the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (1968–1969) and was awarded an honorary degree—the only Filipino to have been so honored there. Bautista taught creative writing and literature at St. Louis University (1963–1968) and the University of Santo Tomas (1969–1970) before moving to De La Salle University-Manila in 1970. He is also a co-founding member of the Philippine Literary Arts Council (PLAC) and a member of the Manila Critics Circle, Philippine Center of International PEN and the Philippine Writers Academy. Bautista has also received Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards (for poetry, fiction and essay in English and Filipino) as well as Philippines Free Press Awards for Fiction, Manila Critics' Circle National Book Awards, Gawad Balagtas from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat ng Pilipinas, the Pablo Roman Prize for the Novel, and the highest accolades from the City of Manila, Quezon City and Iligan City. Bautista was hailed in 1993 as Makata ng Taon by the Komisyon ng mga Wika ng Pilipinas for winning the poetry contest sponsored by the government. -

Spanish Art & Culture Julio Iglesias Julio Iglesias' Biography as found at his official website - www.julioiglesias.com Julio Iglesias was born in Madrid on 23rd September 1943 to Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga and Maria Del Rosario de la Cueva y Perignat. He shared his childhood with his brother Carlos. His father, Dr. Iglesias Puga, was born in Orense, Galicia. On his mother's side, his grandfather was Jose de la Cueva, a famous Andalusian journalist. He was a remarkable athlete, and he played goalkeeper for the junior Real Madrid soccer team. He wanted to be a professional soccer player, but he never abandoned his studies. He studied Law in the Complutense University of Madrid. On the night of 22nd September 1963, while returning from Majadahonda to Madrid about two o'clock in the morning with some friends, he suffered a very severe car accident which left him semi-paralyzed for more than a year and a half. The hope that he would walk again was very slight. To develop and increase the dexterity of his hands he started to play the guitar and write poetry. His personal will to live, and the great support of his family, especially of his father, who even abandoned his profession for more than a year to help his son's rehabilitation, produced a true miracle. After many months of very difficult recuperation Julio began to walk again. Once recovered, he resumed his studies and travelled to England to study English, first in Ramsgate and then went on to Bell's Language School in Cambridge. -

Definition of terms: 1. Painting – refers to the application of color, pigment, or paint to a surface or support. These surfaces may include paper, wood, canvas, metal or walls. Paint is made of pigment mixed in a binder. 2. Sculpture – a three dimensional artwork which may be through different processes, such as carving, modeling, assembling or casting. It may be executed as a free- standing object, in relief, or in environments, and a variety of media may be used. 3. Architecture – the art and science of designing and constructing buildings (structures), and other environmental features. II. The elements of Visual Arts 1. Line – the most basic of all elements. A line is an identifiable path traced by a moving point. Lines vary in types. They can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, straight or curved thick or thin. Different lines are used to signify, different feelings. For example: Horizontal line – suggests a feeling of rest, serenity, or perfect stability Vertical line – dominance, height, power Diagonal line – uncertainty, unrest, movement or action Curved line – flow, softness, flexibility, grace 2. Shape – shapes and forms are figures which define object s in space. A shape is a two- dimensional figure. Circles, triangles, and squares are common examples of shapes. -

The Politics of Naming a Movement: Independent Cinema According to the Cinemalaya Congress (2005-2010) PATRICK F. CAMPOS Philippine Humanities Review, Vol. 13, No. 2, December 2011, pp. 76- 110 ISSN 0031-7802 © 2011 University of the Philippines 76 THE POLITICS OF NAMING A MOVEMENT: INDEPENDENT CINEMA ACCORDING TO THE CINEMALAYA CONGRESS (2005-2010) PATRICK F. CAMPOS Much has been said and written about contemporary “indie” cinema in the Philippines. But what/who is “indie”? The catchphrase has been so frequently used to mean many and sometimes disparate ideas that it has become a confusing and, arguably, useless term. The paper attempts to problematize how the term “indie” has been used and defined by critics and commentators in the context of the Cinemalaya Film Congress, which is one of the important venues for articulating and evaluating the notion of “independence” in Philippine cinema. The congress is one of the components of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, whose founding coincides with and is partly responsible for the increase in production of full-length digital films since 2005. This paper examines the politics of naming the contemporary indie movement which I will discuss based on the transcripts of the congress proceedings and my firsthand experience as a rapporteur (2007- 2009) and panelist (2010) in the congress. Panel reports and final recommendations from 2005 to 2010 will be assessed vis-a-vis the indie films selected for the Cinemalaya competition and exhibition during the same period and the different critical frameworks which panelists have espoused and written about outside the congress proper. Ultimately, by following a number PHILIPPINE HUMANITIES REVIEW 77 of key and recurring ideas, the paper looks at the key conceptions of independent cinema proffered by panelists and participants. -

This occured spontaneously, individually and then collectively in the midst of tropical storm Ondoy, forming a networked group of individuals bonded by shared goals and identities. Using data from Twitter in general and the RockEdRadio Twitter Network in particular, this thesis traces the emergence of relief and rescue networks during the Ondoy Typhoon and subsequent flooding. Diffusion Theory and Theories of Networked Interaction are employed in the analysis of the architecture and operationality of the relevant disaster-relief oriented SNS networks. Furthermore, this thesis also analyses the content of selected Tweets and delves into the unique features of the Philippine context to explain how these online social networks of rescue and relief diffused so spontaneously, rapidly and seamlessly amidst challenging circumstances. The thesis concludes with recommendations regarding the use of SNS technologies in other national disaster scenarios. iii The research and writing of this thesis is dedicated to my father, Danilo Morales, my mother, Lourdes Morales and my sister, Armi Prisara Morales.
