EXTENDED FICTION in GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science
University of Utah UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL UNMASKING THE PLAYER: EXTENDED FICTION IN GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science INTRODUCTION In any story, an element being diegetic means that it is an element of the story that the characters of the fiction can sense. The simplest example is that of music in a movie; if there is a radio playing music in the scene, that music is diegetic. If a musical soundtrack plays over the scene but is something the characters cannot hear, it is non-diegetic(DIEGETIC). The border between the diegetic and non-diegetic is most commonly referred to as “the fourth wall” (Webster), in reference to the imaginary fourth wall of a play set, where the sides and back of the room that events are taking place in are fully represented on the theater stage, but the opening through which the audience observes the events of the play is an imaginary barrier. This barrier isn’t just literally a completion of the four walls in a traditional room of a building, but also metaphorically separates the reality from the fiction, quarantining both from each other as to not interfere. The problem with this boundary is that it can’t fully encompass the medium of video games. Video games, at their very essence, are an interactive medium. They require some breach of the fourth wall for them to function, as the game could not proceed to tell its story without a player’s input, which is an addressing of the audience due to the necessity of their action. -

Dusty Rooms: Il Fenomeno Di Mother
Transcreation: Intersections of Culture and Commerce in Japanese Translation and Localization

While acknowledging localization’s existence as a facet of the larger concept of translation itself, the work examines “translation” and “localization” as if they were two ends of a spectrum; through this contrast, the unique techniques and goals of each method as seen in translated media can be more effectively highlighted. After establishing these working definitions, they can then be applied as a rubric to media examples to determine which “translative” or “localizing” techniques were employed in the -
BCC Slashes Lecturer, Part-Time Positions Part 1: Over 60 Lecturers Gone
“Truth, No Matter The Cost” The Torch BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT NEWSPAPER IGNITING STUDENTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE VOLUME 24 . NO. 1 TORCHBCC.COM SEPTEMBER 2015 BCC Slashes Lecturer, Part-Time Positions Part 1: Over 60 Lecturers gone GABE WANISSIAN EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The 64 full-time lecturers and 150 part-time position cuts that occurred over the summer as cost cutting measures are signs of a “a reality we have to face,” said Bergen Community College spokesman Larry Hlavenka, Jr. “In these times, we have to work within the confines of a budget, we still have to ensure that we are not putting it on the backs of the students.” Nearly $934,000 will be saved from the lecturer cuts, and around $1,000,000 will be saved for the 150 part time positions that were either removed, or had their hours reduced, Hlavenka said. “This is impacting the students,” said Business Department Chair and head of ADCO (Academic Department Chairs Organization) Professor Robert Saldarini; three lecturers were let go, and 15 classes were canceled, reassigned or accommodated in his department. Not all courses that were dropped were due to the lecturer cuts, said Saldarini, as classes that do not meet a certain registration number may also be dropped. Saldarini said there had been word since March that lecturers may not be reappointed for the fall semester, in which ADCO filed a resolution to administration to Not-reappointed lecturer positions occurred about a month before the first day of class. mitigate the lecturer cuts around the end of the spring semester. -
How to Draw and Color Ness from Earthbound
Stephanie Lam ENGL 2116-021 Set of Instructions 3 Aug 2017 Ness is the silent protagonist from an RPG-game called Earthbound, How to Draw and Color Ness released by Nintendo in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment from Earthbound System. He lives in Onett alongside his mother and sister. One day, a futuristic warrior arrives in a meteorite that crashed in Ness’ hometown. The warrior, named Buzz-Buzz, tells Ness about a doomed future and that Ness is one of the Chosen Four who could save the world. Ness sets out on a journey across Eagleland to find the rest of the Chosen Four and put a stop to the evil encroaching his homeland. Throughout the game, the player mostly controls Ness, though in some parts he or she controls one of the other Chosen Four. Ness uses bats or yoyos to fight, and wields pychokinetic powers called PSI. He and his friends fight wacky enemies they encounter in the overworld, such as the New Age Retro Hippie or the Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom, in a turn-based party battle system. The game is mostly known for its offbeat humor and heartwarming moments. Although Earthbound sold well in Japan, it did poorly in the United States because of a horrible ad campaign. Its commercial failure in the states caused the game to fall into obscurity. Physical copies of the game sell for over a hundred US dollars and complete sets can even go in the thousands range. The game has developed a cult following which hopes for Nintendo to someday turn its attention to the series. -

Nintendo's Leak
Rumor: Smash Bros. roster leaks; you can finally shoot the Duck Hunt dog Convincing video footage shows Bowser Jr., Xenoblade protagonist as new fighters. Sam Machkovech - 8/25/2014, 2:29 PM NeoGAF The next entries in the Super Smash Bros. fighting franchise, a 3DS/Wii U duo with separate (and partly unknown) release dates, has seen its roster of fan-favorite characters expand in drips of one or two character announcements at a time for years now. That promotional slow-drip may have finally run out, however, thanks to a mix of questionable screenshots and convincing video footage that surfaced on enthusiast forum NeoGAF in recent days. The videos, which were uploaded [and promptly deleted by way of Nintendo copyright claim] on Monday and focused on the 3DS edition of the next Smash Bros., contained appearances from previously unannounced characters Bowser Jr.—piloting the flying clown-face pod that first appeared in Super Mario World—and Shulk, the spiky-haired, JRPG-cliche protagonist from the Nintendo-published Xenoblade Chronicles. These videos appeared to confirm leaked information that surfaced as early as last Wednesday, including a full roster screenshot that contained, among other characters, the dog from NES classic Duck Hunt. If true, this would be the first time the annoying, laughing pooch would be directly controllable in a Nintendo game, though you could actually shoot the mongrel in his grinning face if you tracked down a Vs. Duck Hunt arcade machine. That supposed full-character roster screenshot also included returning Smash faves like Earthbound protagonist Ness, classic Nintendo mascot R.O.B., and Star Fox sidekick Falco. -
