InSight: RIVIER ACADEMIC JOURNAL, VOLUME 14, NUMBER 1, FALL 2018 EXPLORING THE UNIVERSE: Meet Kevin Gill ‘11G Michelle Marrone (From Rivier Today, Fall 2018) From the comfort of his lab chair in sunny, southern California, Kevin Gill ’11G has a view into outer space. As a Science Data Software Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), he spends his time planning and designing technology in support of environmental science and space exploration, as well as data visualization and planetary imaging. His recent work not only produced the first-ever close views of Saturn, but also contributed to NASA’s team winning an Emmy Award. Kevin earned his M.S. in Computer Science at Rivier and has been designing software to render the unique images he gathers ever since. He used an algorithm he developed during his program at Rivier to generate hypothetical images portraying Mars as a vibrant planet with oceans, an oxygen-rich atmosphere, and a green biosphere. The images went viral and within a week his work was featured on major media networks—Discovery News, Fox News, Universe Today, and the Huffington Post. His work captured NASA’s attention and paved the way for his career move. “Rivier taught me many of the algorithms and development practices I still use today at NASA,” says Kevin. “In fact, I can trace the lineage of code currently running on NASA systems directly to my final master’s project at the University.” The systems and tools he develops support a range of scientists specializing in the areas of climate, oceanography, asteroids, planetary science, and others. -

Long-Range Rovers for Mars Exploration and Sample Return
2001-01-2138 Long-Range Rovers for Mars Exploration and Sample Return Joe C. Parrish NASA Headquarters ABSTRACT This paper discusses long-range rovers to be flown as part of NASA’s newly reformulated Mars Exploration Program (MEP). These rovers are currently scheduled for launch first in 2007 as part of a joint science and technology mission, and then again in 2011 as part of a planned Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission. These rovers are characterized by substantially longer range capability than their predecessors in the 1997 Mars Pathfinder and 2003 Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions. This includes topics related to computer graphics, software development, astronomy, & planetary science. The purpose of the project was to create a visualization of the planet Mars as could look with a living biosphere. This makes no distinction as to whether this biosphere would represent an ancient or future, possibly terraformed planet. 1 Background Mars, named for the Roman god of war. Ancient civilizations have forever associated the planet with fear, war, and destruction. It is the color of blood, and “one of a handful of planets visible to the naked eye, and the only one of marked color, so the planet demanded attention (Pyle, 2012).” Ever since man has noticed it, there have been dreams and visions of life on Mars, from Giovanni Schiaparelli and Percival Lowell describing channels and canals to Robert A. Heinlein’s science fiction. Lowell, in particular famous for fantastic writings of Mars, asked “are physical forces alone at work there, or has evolution begotten something more complex, something not unakin to what we know on Earth as life?” (Lowell, 1895) Even more recent discoveries by NASA’s Curiosity rover have found proof that liquid water once flowed billions of years ago positing an environment that could have served host to life (Brown, 2013). -

June 24, 2012 Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration1 ‐ Report of a Workshop at LPI, June 12‐14, 2012 – Stephen Mackwell2 (LPI) Michael Amato (NASA Goddard), Bobby Braun (Georgia Institute of Technology), Steve Clifford (LPI), John Connolly (NASA Johnson), Marcello Coradini (ESA), Bethany Ehlmann (Caltech), Vicky Hamilton (SwRI), John Karcz (NASA Ames), Chris McKay (NASA Ames), Michael Meyer (NASA HQ), Brian Mulac (NASA Marshall), Doug Stetson (SSECG), Dale Thomas (NASA Marshall), and Jorge Vago (ESA) Executive Summary Recent deep cuts in the budget for Mars exploration at NASA necessitate a reconsideration of the Mars robotic exploration program within NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD), especially in light of overlapping requirements with future planning for human missions to the Mars environment. As part of that reconsideration, a workshop on “Concepts and Approaches for Mars Exploration” was held at the USRA Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, TX, on June 12‐14, 2012. Details of the meeting, including abstracts, video recordings of all sessions, and plenary presentations, can be found at http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/marsconcepts2012/. Participation in the workshop included scientists, engineers, and graduate students from academia, NASA Centers, Federal Laboratories, industry, and international partner organizations. Attendance was limited to 185 participants in order to facilitate open discussion of the critical issues for Mars exploration in the coming decades. As 390 abstracts were submitted by individuals interested in participating in the workshop, the Workshop Planning Team carefully selected a subset of the abstracts for presentation based on their appropriateness to the workshop goals, and ensuring that a broad diverse suite of concepts and ideas was presented. -

Illinois State Museum Geology Online – http://geologyonline.museum.state.il.us Sedimentary Rocks Grade Level: 9 – 12 Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce sedimentary rocks. Students will learn what sedimentary rocks are and how they form. It will teach them how to identify some common examples. Suggested Goals: Students will shake a flask of sand and water to see how particles settle. They will draw a picture showing where the various rocks form and they will identify some common examples. Targeted Objectives: All of Illinois is covered by sedimentary rocks. In most places, they reach a thickness that could be expressed in miles rather than feet. Ancient seas dropped untold numbers of particles for hundreds of millions of years creating the layers that bury the original igneous rocks in 2,000 to 17,000 feet of sedimentary layers. These valuable layers are used to construct our homes, build our highways, and some were even used to heat our homes. The Illinois Basin dominates the geology of southern Illinois. There the layers dip down until they are over three miles thick. The geology of Illinois cannot be told without discussing sedimentary rocks because they are what Illinois is made of. Students will learn to tell the difference between the major sedimentary rock varieties. Students will learn in what environments different sedimentary rocks form. Students will learn what sedimentary rocks are. Background: Most sedimentary rocks are formed when weathering crumbles the parent rock to such a small size that they can be carried by wind or water. Those particles suspended in water collide with one another countless times gradually becoming smaller and more rounded. -

Title 430 – National Soil Survey Handbook Part 629 – Glossary of Landform and Geologic Terms Subpart A – General Information 629.0 Definition and Purpose This glossary provides the NCSS soil survey program, soil scientists, and natural resource specialists with landform, geologic, and related terms and their definitions to— (1) Improve soil landscape description with a standard, single source landform and geologic glossary. (2) Enhance geomorphic content and clarity of soil map unit descriptions by use of accurate, defined terms. (3) Establish consistent geomorphic term usage in soil science and the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS). (4) Provide standard geomorphic definitions for databases and soil survey technical publications. (5) Train soil scientists and related professionals in soils as landscape and geomorphic entities. 629.1 Responsibilities This glossary serves as the official NCSS reference for landform, geologic, and related terms. The staff of the National Soil Survey Center, located in Lincoln, NE, is responsible for maintaining and updating this glossary. Soil Science Division staff and NCSS participants are encouraged to propose additions and changes to the glossary for use in pedon descriptions, soil map unit descriptions, and soil survey publications. The Glossary of Geology (GG, 2005) serves as a major source for many glossary terms. The American Geologic Institute (AGI) granted the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (formerly the Soil Conservation Service) permission (in letters dated September 11, 1985, and September 22, 1993) to use existing definitions.
