^ 25. PELAGIC SEDIMENTSi G. Arrhenius 1. Concept of Pelagic Sedimentation The term pelagic sediment is often rather loosely defined. It is generally applied to marine sediments in which the fraction derived from the continents indicates deposition from a dilute mineral suspension distributed throughout deep-ocean water. It appears logical to base a precise definition of pelagic sediments on some limiting property of this suspension, such as concentration or rate of removal. Further, the property chosen should, if possible, be reflected in the ensuing deposit, so that the criterion in question can be applied to ancient sediments. Extensive measurements of the concentration of particulate matter in sea- water have been carried out by Jerlov (1953); however, these measurements reflect the sum of both the terrigenous mineral sol and particles of organic (biotic) origin. Aluminosilicates form a major part of the inorganic mineral suspension; aluminum is useful as an indicator of these, since this element forms 7 to 9% of the total inorganic component, 2 and can be quantitatively determined at concentration levels down to 3 x lO^i^ (Sackett and Arrhenius, 1962). Measurements of the amount of particulate aluminum in North Pacific deep water indicate an average concentration of 23 [xg/1. of mineral suspensoid, or 10 mg in a vertical sea-water column with a 1 cm^ cross-section at oceanic depth. The mass of mineral particles larger than 0.5 [x constitutes 60%, or less, of the total. From the concentration of the suspensoid and the rate of fallout of terrigenous minerals on the ocean floor, an average passage time (Barth, 1952) of less than 100 years is obtained for the fraction of particles larger than 0.5 [i. -

The NAP Pacific margin consists of a wide continental shelf dissected by several troughs, tens of kilometres wide and long. The Biscoe Trough, which has been almost entirely surveyed with multibeam sonar, shows spectacular fan-shaped streamlining sea-floor morphologies revealing the presence of ice streams during the Last Glacial Maximum. In the study area the continental rise comprises the six northernmost sediment mounds of the NAP Pacific margin and the canyon-channel systems between them. -

The maps, which cover about 25 000 km² and water depths from 60 m to 2700 m, are based on multibeam echosounder data (bathymetry and backscatter), 215 video lines each 700 m long, seabed sediment samples from 40 stations (grab, boxcore and multicore) and 5500 km of sub-bottom profiler data. The sedimentary environment map has 6 classes, focussing on present depositional environments (erosion and deposition). Large parts of the Nordland VI continental shelf are dominated by erosion processes, but some deposition occurs in topographic depressions and glacial troughs like Trænadjupet and Vesterdjupet. Hemipelagic sediments are deposited in deep water areas on the continental slope and abyssal plain. The seabed sediments (genesis) map comprises a geological interpretation of the uppermost few metres of the seabed, and has 10 classes. -

RESUMO A plataforma continental Atlântica do Rio Grande do Sul e Uruguai foi utilizada como laboratório natural para testar as relações entre propriedades de tamanho de grão e ambiente sedimentar. A evolução Pleistoceno/Holoceno da região foi intensamente estudada através de um mapeamento detalhado, e de estudos sedimentológicos e estratigráficos, oferecendo, dessa forma, uma excelente oportunidade para esse tipo de trabalho. Acumulações de areia e cascalho, vinculadas a níveis de estabilização identificados da transgressão Holocênica, localizados nas isóbatas de 110-120 e 20-30 metros, fornecem elementos confiáveis relacionados com a fonte, transporte e nível de energia de deposição e podem ser utilizados como linhas de evidencias na interpretação ambiental. ABSTRACT The Atlantic Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) and Uruguay inner continental shelf was used as a natural laboratory to test the relationship between grain-size properties and sedimentary environment. The Pleistocene/Holocene evolution of the region was intensively studied through detailed mapping, sedimentological and stratigraphic research thus offering an excellent opportunity of developing this type of work. Sand and gravel deposits linked with identified stillstands of the Holocene transgression located at 110-120 and 20-30 meters isobath provided elements related to the source, transport and depositional energy level and can be used as a tool for environmental interpretation. Students will learn what sedimentary rocks are and how they form. It will teach them how to identify some common examples. Suggested Goals: Students will shake a flask of sand and water to see how particles settle. They will draw a picture showing where the various rocks form and they will identify some common examples. Targeted Objectives: All of Illinois is covered by sedimentary rocks. In most places, they reach a thickness that could be expressed in miles rather than feet. Ancient seas dropped untold numbers of particles for hundreds of millions of years creating the layers that bury the original igneous rocks in 2,000 to 17,000 feet of sedimentary layers. These valuable layers are used to construct our homes, build our highways, and some were even used to heat our homes. The Illinois Basin dominates the geology of southern Illinois. There the layers dip down until they are over three miles thick. The geology of Illinois cannot be told without discussing sedimentary rocks because they are what Illinois is made of. Students will learn to tell the difference between the major sedimentary rock varieties. Students will learn in what environments different sedimentary rocks form. Students will learn what sedimentary rocks are. Background: Most sedimentary rocks are formed when weathering crumbles the parent rock to such a small size that they can be carried by wind or water. Those particles suspended in water collide with one another countless times gradually becoming smaller and more rounded. -

Title 430 – National Soil Survey Handbook Part 629 – Glossary of Landform and Geologic Terms Subpart A – General Information 629.0 Definition and Purpose This glossary provides the NCSS soil survey program, soil scientists, and natural resource specialists with landform, geologic, and related terms and their definitions to— (1) Improve soil landscape description with a standard, single source landform and geologic glossary. (2) Enhance geomorphic content and clarity of soil map unit descriptions by use of accurate, defined terms. (3) Establish consistent geomorphic term usage in soil science and the National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS). (4) Provide standard geomorphic definitions for databases and soil survey technical publications. (5) Train soil scientists and related professionals in soils as landscape and geomorphic entities. 629.1 Responsibilities This glossary serves as the official NCSS reference for landform, geologic, and related terms. The staff of the National Soil Survey Center, located in Lincoln, NE, is responsible for maintaining and updating this glossary. OCN 201 Coastal Sediments Lab Sediment Particle Size Distribution and Turbidity Flows Although this laboratory will pertain to oceanic sediments, similar processes can also be observed on land and in other aquatic systems (i.e., lakes, wetlands). This reading should supplement your understanding of the processes that affect particle size distribution across a marine system (i.e., barrier reef). Next week’s laboratory exercises will focus on demonstrating some of these principles, and give you experience in quantifying particle size distributions across a barrier reef. Sediments Sediment, by definition, is any loose or fragmented material. Hence, loose sand, shells and their fragments, dead leaves, and mud can all be categorized as sediment. All sediments have a source from which they originate. Pelagic sediments are those found in the open ocean, and whose origin cannot be traced to a specific landmass. They include red clay, radiolarian ooze, diatom ooze, and calcareous (nanofossil or foraminefera) ooze (see images of selected biogenic tests – see page 8 of Laboratory#5). Terrigenous sediments are those whose origin is traceable to a specific land (terra) area. They include a series of variously colored muds, volcanic debris, coral muds, and turbidity flow deposits. Lithogenous sediments are derived from weathering of rock (lithos) material, but their source cannot be readily identified. Red clay in the abyssal ocean is lithogenous. Much of the sediment on the sea floor of the open ocean is lithogenous clay that was transported thousands of miles from its origin. Calcareous sediments are found over oceanic rises and platforms, whereas red clays are typically distributed in the deep ocean basins. -

Descriptions of Common Sedimentary Environments River systems: . Alluvial Fan: a pile of sediment at the base of mountains shaped like a fan. When a stream comes out of the mountains onto the flat plain, it drops its sediment load. The sediment ranges from fine to very coarse angular sediment, including boulders. Alluvial fans are often built by flash floods. River Channel: where the river flows. The channel moves sideways over time. Typical sediments include sand, gravel and cobbles. Particles are typically rounded and sorted. The sediment shows signs of current, such as ripple marks. Flood Plain: where the river overflows periodically. When the river overflows, its velocity decreases rapidly. This means that the coarsest sediment (usually sand) is deposited next to the river, and the finer sediment (silt and clay) is deposited in thin layers farther from the river. Delta: where a stream enters a standing body of water (ocean, bay or lake). As the velocity of the river drops, it dumps its sediment. Over time, the deposits build further and further into the standing body of water. Deltas are complex environments with channels of coarser sediment, floodplain areas of finer sediment, and swamps with very fine sediment and organic deposits (coal) Lake: fresh or alkaline water. Lakes tend to be quiet water environments (except very large lakes like the Great Lakes, which have shorelines much like ocean beaches). Alkaline lakes that seasonally dry up leave evaporite deposits. Most lakes leave clay and silt deposits. Beach, barrier bar: near-shore or shoreline deposits. Beaches are active water environments, and so tend to have coarser sediment (sand, gravel and cobbles).
