Poor immune systems causing record work losses According to a new study published in the September 2019 issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, nearly one-fifth of working adults will experience a cold each year. The study estimated 20 million annual missed workdays might be just the tip of the iceberg, because the estimates include only colds that resulted in doctor’s visits or restricted activity days. There may be as many as 70 million lost workdays due to colds, when actual missed work time is combined with lost productivity. Past flu seasons likely cost employers nationwide millions of lost workdays and billions of dollars. Nearly 111 million workdays are lost due to the flu each year, There may be as many as according to Flu.gov, costing employers approximately $7 billion per year in sick days and lost productivity. 70 million lost workdays The study also found Americans spend nearly $3 billion annually on over- due to colds, when the-counter drugs that may not provide any symptom relief. actual missed work time Since the 1940s, studies have shown the use of botanicals and nutritional supplements may both prevent and reduce the effects of common colds and is combined with lost influenza and support immune cell function and promote respiratory health.* productivity. Zinc and vitamin C Zinc plays an important role in maintaining healthy immune function. Human studies have observed even a mild zinc deficiency can elicit changes in immune status, such as defective natural killer (NK) cell function, decreased interleukin-2 production, and energy. Other studies have shown DHEA and its metabolites have powerful immune-enhancing and antiviral effects.

3 A meta-analysis determined that vitamin C was effective at supporting the health of 11,077 people who had the common cold. *

EpiCor® EpiCor® is a dried fermentate produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, an immune-modulating baker’s yeast. * There are several good human studies showing EpiCor® acts as an antioxidant and supports a healthy immune response during exposure to colds and flus and during pollen season. “EpiCor® strengthens mucosal immunity and increases levels of salivary secretory immunoglobulin A, a substance coating mucosal surfaces that acts like a shield to stop unwanted substances from entering the body,” says Dr. Meletis.

Garlic One study did evaluate an allicin-containing garlic supplement on cold incidence and duration in 146 volunteers. Subjects received one capsule daily for 12 weeks between November-February, and symptoms were assessed via a symptom diary using a five-point scale. In the garlic-supplemented group, 24 colds were reported compared to 65 in the placebo group; the treatment group experience shorter duration of cold symptoms compared to placebo – 1.5 versus 5.0 days, respectively.

4 Olive leaf extract Olive leaf extract contains phenolic compounds, specifically oleuropein, that have demonstrated potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity. Oleuropein and derivatives such as elenolic acid have been shown to be effective inin vitro and animal studies against numerous microorganisms, including retroviruses, coxsackie viruses, 150 influenza, and parainfluenza 3,150,151 as well as some bacteria.

Influenza, although considered a preventable disease, accounts for 36,000 deaths annually in the United States. Nutritional supplementation and immune-stimulating and antiviral botanicals can support the body’s natural defenses, potentially decreasing the incidence of colds and flu, shortening the duration and decreasing the intensity of symptoms, and preventing complications.

5 2 Sleep and mental health Anxiety, depression, and Overall, Americans were sleep deprived long before the current health state bipolar disorder are most of affairs. According to Harvard Medical School, anywhere from 10-18% of commonly associated with Americans were affected by some type of chronic sleep problem last year.1 In comparison, 50-80% of those with a psychiatric condition reported having chronic sleep issues. difficulty sleeping. Anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder are most commonly associated with chronic sleep issues. Furthermore, anywhere from 65-90% of adults with major depression also suffer from some type of sleep disorder.1 Given such high numbers, it only makes sense for you to recommend natural sleep and mental wellness supplements to inspire sleep readiness for your patients.

Sceletium tortuosom Sceletium tortuosom is a traditional herb of South Africa that has been used for millennia to support appetite, energy levels and general emotional feelings of wellbeing. Known also as kanna or kougoed (in the language Afrikaans), the small plant grows in the winter, lying close to the ground, with distinctive succulent leaves and white, yellow or pale pink flowers. The principle active constituents of the plant are mesembrine, mesembrenone and mesembrenol, alkaloids that can interact with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors. Mesembrine in particular has been studied for its effects with the body’s normal regulation of monoamine release and serotonin uptake, both actions, which can have supportive effects on optimal mood and relaxation. Sceletium is not typically known to be habit forming or have unwanted cognitive side effects. In one double blind, placebo-controlled study involving healthy college aged adults, a single dose of Sceletium extract was shown to support the amygdala’s response to fearful situations, indicating that Sceletium may be able to modulate the body’s normal response to perceived stressors. Another

6 randomized, double blind three- month study in healthy adults showed that Sceletium extracts were well tolerated and safe at the doses studied. Additional studies support Scleletium’s use in promoting feelings of contentment, emotional wellness and overall neurological function.

Cannabidiol Cannabidiol (CBD) is perhaps one of the most exciting, yet often misunderstood, natural alternatives to standard pharmacological treatment for sleep and mood to come along in recent years. CBD supplements have been shown to not only improve sleep and mood, but also improve chronic pain and reduce inflammation.2 Because of the legal status of CBD, it is important to understand the regulatory rules governing CBD products in your state before suggesting them to your patients.2 A 2018 crossover-design paper from Frontiers in Pharmacology examined the effect of CBD on anxiety and the sleep-wake cycle in healthy subjects.3 A group of 27 test subjects were given either placebo or 300 mg of CBD (at doses given to treat anxiety) before eight hours of sleep. The treatments were switched for the following night. During sleep, all subjects underwent polysomnography testing, and cognitive and subjective testing after waking up to assess any residual effects from the CBD.3 The researchers found that CBD, given at doses to treat anxiety, did not interfere with the body’s normal sleep-wake cycles, nor did it have any significant unpleasant side effects. The researchers further suggested the need for further study in a larger group of patients, using different doses of CBD.3 It found that CBD improved the symptoms of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a disorder in which a person acts out their dreams. RBD is associated with poor sleep and nightmares. A 2017 review also noted that CBD may be helpful in treating RBD, and that it shows potential for treating excessive daytime Cannabidiol (CBD) is sleepiness. Some suggest that CBD can increase feelings of calm, help with perhaps one of the muscle relaxation, decrease acute pain, and have anti-inflammatory effects – all of which may help with a better night’s sleep. In fact, a recent study found that most exciting, yet often CBD reduced symptoms of insomnia more effectively than THC. Although the misunderstood, natural mechanism for sleep is not fully understood, CBD is claimed to help sleep by alternatives to standard reducing anxiety and pain, two symptoms that can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. In general, techniques that help with calming and relaxation pharmacological treatment have been shown to be effective in improving sleep. for sleep and mood to come along in recent years.

7 Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series Study published January 7, 2019

Context Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many cannabinoid compounds found in . It does not appear to alter consciousness or trigger a “high.” A recent surge in scientific publications has found preclinical and clinical evidence documenting value for CBD in some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Evidence points toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system. Interest in CBD as a treatment of a wide range of disorders has exploded, yet few clinical studies of CBD exist in the psychiatric literature.

Objective To determine whether CBD helps improve sleep and/or anxiety in a clinical population.

Design A large retrospective case series at a psychiatric clinic involving clinical application of CBD for anxiety and sleep complaints as an adjunct to usual treatment. The retrospective chart review included monthly documentation of Evidence points toward anxiety and sleep quality in 103 adult patients. a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous Main Outcome Measures Sleep and anxiety scores, using validated instruments, at baseline and after CBD system. treatment.

Results The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time. In this chart review, CBD was well tolerated in all but 3 patients.

8 3 One-two punch for pain, inflammation

CBD and curcumin helps create a synergistic response, where the two together are greater than the effect provided by each on its own. Research reveals that chronic inflammatory diseases are expected to “increase persistently” through the year 2050. This means continuously elevating rates Curcumin, an active of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, and ingredient in , even allergies – an environment primed for the new CBD and curcumin anti- has also been found to inflammatory combination. Many factors can contribute to this increased chronic inflammation in the have anti-inflammatory body. Regular exposure to environmental pollutants and toxins, poor diet, lack properties as well. of exercise, chronic stress, and a dysfunctional immune system can all lead to elevated inflammation levels and susceptibility to viruses. One way to help patients potentially reduce their body’s inflammation is by recommending anti-inflammatory supplements. Two all-natural ingredients that have been scientifically shown to provide this effect are CBD and curcumin.

Curcumin as an anti-inflammatory Curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric, has also been found to have anti- inflammatory properties as well. In a 2017 review of curcumin’s effects on health, researchers noted that turmeric can help in the management of inflammatory conditions. It also offers benefits with regard to inflammation caused by exercise, helping to reduce the resulting muscle soreness and improve recovery and performance. A 2013 study in the British Journal of Pharmacology explains that curcumin works by blocking the action and production of the cytokine TNF -α. Furthermore, it offers patients an orally-bioavailable treatment option that is safe and less expensive than many prescription drugs designed to provide the same effect.

9 The synergy of combined CBD and curcumin supplements Some manufacturers are now offering supplemental products that include both CBD and curcumin. This combination product helps create a synergistic response, which states that the effect of two substances together is often greater than the effect provided by each on its own. In addition to being more powerful, a combination CBD and curcumin supplement provides patients a simpler anti-inflammatory supplemental regimen. Instead of having to buy two individual supplements — which can also mean increased cost — the patient is able to achieve the same (or better) effect with one.

Helping patients select a quality CBD and curcumin supplement Sometimes patients purchase a low-quality supplement and, therefore, don’t get the results they expect. This experience causes them to lack belief in the value of supplements. That’s why it’s helpful to educate patients about the differences between a high-quality and low-quality supplement. Higher quality supplements are those that, first and foremost, are made with high-quality ingredients. In the CBD world, this means using a good strain of hemp, but also the product containing full-spectrum CBD. This means that, in addition to CBD, it also contains other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, providing even more health-related benefits. Higher quality supplements are also those created by following Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). These supplements have undergone rigorous testing, further reinforcing their safety and efficacy. Explaining this to patients help them better understand that not all supplements are created equal. It also helps them recognize that if they’re not getting the results they desire, it is possible that it is that specific supplement — and not the ingredient it contains — that is potentially the cause.

In addition to being more Educating patients about bioavailability powerful, a combination Part of the supplemental discussion includes talking about the amount of CBD and curcumin ingredients a product contains versus how much of those substances the body can actually use. supplement provides It’s not uncommon for people to think that their body is able to effectively patients a simpler anti- absorb the total amount of the vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients inflammatory supplemental contained in a particular supplement. However, this is not always the case. Bioavailability can be impacted by a number of factors. Dosage amount, regimen. product form, method of intake, and the body’s ability to metabolize that ingredient can all impact the amount it is able to actually use. For this reason, it’s helpful if the supplement contains ingredients that aid in bioavailability. This can increase the effect of the product simply by making more of the anti-inflammatories available for use.Patented VESIsorb® technology is clinically proven to provide up to 440% more bioavailability via multiple PK studies measured in human subjects. † VESIsorb® is the leading delivery system innovation for dramatically improving the bioavailability of poorly absorbed ingredients.

The endocannabinoid system is known to play an important role in regulating immunity and scientists consider it to be one of the “gatekeepers” of the immune system.1 The endocannabinoid system includes receptors known as cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2) as well as the endogenous cannabinoids anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and enzymes that influence the production of these endocannabinoids. There’s scientific evidence that cells of the immune system express both CB1 and CB2, although CB2 concentrations are higher than CB1.2

Maintaining a healthy gut microbiota* A large proportion of the immune system is located in the GI tract, where there are large numbers of organized lymphoid tissue and scattered innate and adaptive effector cells.7 The gut microbiota, the collection of organisms — good and bad — found in the intestines play an important role in helping the body have a balanced immune response.8 Excessive inflammation in the gut can lead to intestinal permeability, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and an impaired intestinal immune response.9,10 One way the body counteracts this is through the endocannabinoid system.9,10 Like endogenous cannabinoids, CBD also has been found to support a healthy intestinal inflammatory response in human trials.11* The key message here is that keeping the gut healthy supports overall immunity.*

Compared with the placebo, 300 mg of CBD led to the subjects being calmer and more relaxed during the speech.

12 A well- formulated multivitamin can provide adults with the necessary vitamins and minerals for overall general health as well as maintaining healthy skin, eyes, bones, cellular function and immune support. 5 Essential vitamins and minerals for overall good health

Many doctors understand the need for a multivitamin as an “insurance policy” to help bolster an already healthy diet. Many patients understand this need as well, but often the typical multivitamin is challenging for everyday use due to factors such as size, odor, taste and dosage. Numerous studies show that a significant portion of the population may not be receiving all the necessary nutrients daily. A well- formulated multivitamin can provide adults with the necessary vitamins and minerals for overall general health as well as maintaining healthy skin, eyes, bones, cellular function and immune support. TruGen3 provides these important vitamins and minerals in meaningful and well-absorbed amounts.

• Vitamin A is well known for its key roles in eye, skin and immune health. Vitamin A is included in 2 forms: 4500 IU (90%) as natural beta-carotene which can be converted into vitamin A by the body as well as providing additional antioxidant protection and 500 IU (10%) as preformed vitamin A, providing the body with the readily used form of vitamin A in a smaller amount.

• Vitamin B12, a crucial nutrient needed for neurological and blood cell production, is provided in its better-absorbed coenzyme B forms, cobamamide and methylcobalamin. Other active forms of B vitamins,
