Additionally, they can be separated from B. parri Nybelin, 1957, the only other known species of the genus, by their lack of basibranchial tooth patches, smaller eye (10.7–12.3% head length), and shorter pre-dorsal-n region (17.1–18.9% SL). Previously B. iris was said to dier from B. parri in the number of branchiostegal rays (six versus seven, respectively), but one of the present specimens of B. iris (413 mm SL) has seven branchiostegal rays on the le side and six on the right. Earlier workers have suggested the occurrence of Barathrites in the Pacic Ocean, but no documented records from this ocean appear to exist. -

Taiwan is situated along the edge of the Eurasia plate, at the junction of three Large Marine Ecosystems or Ecoregions of the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Philippines. As nearly two-thirds of its surrounding marine ecosystems are deep-sea environments, Taiwan is expected to hold a rich diversity of deep-sea fish. -

The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. -

ALLEN Australian Museum, Sydney, Australia Currently over 4000 species of fishes are known from Australia. An analysis ofdistribution patterns of 3800 species is presented. Over 20% of the species are endemic to Australia, with endemic species occuiring primarily in southern Australia. There is also a small component of the fauna which is found only in the southwestern Pacific (New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and New Zealand). The majority of the other species are widely distributed in the western Pacific Ocean. South Pacific Commission, Nouméa, New Caledonia The Oceanic Fisheries Programme of the South Pacific Commission is currently pursuing a research project on age and growth of two tropical tuna species, yellowfm tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). The daily periodicity of microincrements forrned with the sagittal otoliths of these two spceies has been validated by oxytetracycline marking in previous studies. These validation studies have come from fishes within three regions of the Pacific (eastem, central and western tropical Pacific). Otolith microincrements are counted along transverse section with a light microscope. -

Sampling by trawl, baited hooks and cameras we show that the Chondrichthyes (sharks, rays and chimaeras) are absent from, or very rare in this region. Analysis of a global data set shows a trend of rapid disappearance of chondrichthyan species with depth when compared with bony fishes. Sharks, apparently well adapted to life at high pressures are conspicuous on slopes down to 2000 m including scavenging at food falls such as dead whales. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The cosmopolitan, deep sea, aphyonid genus Aphyonus is known from less than 100 specimens. The type species A. ge- latinosus Günther, 1878 and three additional valid species, A. brevidorsalis Nielsen, 1969, A. bolini Nielsen, 1974, and A. rassi Nielsen, 1975 were all based on single specimens. Since then several specimens have been caught of which 52 are examined for the present revision. Most of the specimens are referred to A. gelatinosus but also to A. bolini and A. rassi. A result of the enlarged material is that the type species, A. gelatinosus, is found to differ so much from the remaining species that a new genus, Paraphyonus, is established for these species. Furthermore two new species of Paraphyonus are here described, P. iselini based on six specimens from the tropical northwestern Atlantic Ocean and P. merretti based on three specimens from the northeastern Atlantic Ocean. The present knowledge of the variation of the Paraphyonus species makes it relevant to transfer Barathronus solomonensis Nielsen & Møller, 2008 to this genus.
