The Laodamia Myth
APPENDIX: THE LAODAMIA MYTH Most of the testimony we have on the Laodamia myth is from relative ly late sources. While we know of treatments that predate poem 68, it is not possible to establish in any detail which versions of the myth these represented. Homer (//. 2. 698-701) gives no details beyond Protesilaus' death and does not even name the widow, describing her only as ~1L~t8pucp7Ji;. According to Pausanias ( 4.2. 7), Protesilaus' wife was called Polydora in the Cypria. Pausanias says that in this poem the widow took her own life but does not make it clear whether this act followed Pro tesilaus' death or his return to the Underworld after the reunion. The word Pausanias uses of her suicide, lmxot'tota~!i(uv, "to slay over or in succession to a corpse,'' makes it unlikely that the Cypn·a dealt with the version in which she dies following the image of her husband into the fire. The few surviving fragments from Euripides' tragedy Protesilaus, of uncertain date, do little to shed light on the episodes and incidents of the play. According to the brief synopsis of the play that has been preserved (Schol. Aristid. p. 671 ), Protesilaus left Laodamia on their wedding day. After his death he obtained permission to return to his wife for a single day. The synopsis makes no mention of Laodamia's suicide or of the image. One fragment is especially tantalizing (fr. 655, Nauck2): oux &v 1tpo80£11v xot£1tEp <i~uxov ~O..ov. If <i~uxov means ''inanimate'' here, it could be a reference to the image that Laodamia made. -

Getting acquainted with the myths What "getting acquainted" may mean We'll first try to clarify the meaning that the expression "getting acquainted" may have in this context: In a practical sense, I mean by "acquaintance" a general knowledge of the tales of mythology, including how they relate to each other. This concept includes neither analysis nor interpretation of the myths nor plunging too deep into one tale or another. In another sense, the expression "getting acquainted" has further implications that deserve elucidation: First of all, let us remember that we naturally investigate what we ignore, and not what we already know; accordingly, we set out to study the myths not because we feel we know them but because we feel we know nothing or very little about them. I mention this obvious circumstance because I believe that we should bear in mind that, in this respect, we are not in the same position as our remote ancestors, who may be assumed to have made their acquaintance with the myths more or less in the same way one learns one's mother tongue, and consequently did not have to study them in any way. -

I argue that the complex status of tyche in Aristotle's texts, when combined with its appearance in the Platonic dialogues and the framework of Greek myth and poetry (poiesis), underscores the seriousness with which the Greeks consider the role of chance in human life. -

Older interpretations tended to criticize the final stories about Ar- tayctes and Artembares as anticlimactic or inappropriate: Did Herodotus forget himself here, or were the stories intended as interludes, preludes to further narrative?2 Entirely opposite is the praise accorded Herodotus in a recent commentary on Book 9: “The brilliance of Herodotus as a writer and thinker is mani- fest here, as the conclusion of the Histories both brings together those themes which have permeated the entire work and, at the same time, alludes to the new themes of the post-war world.” 3 More recent appreciation for Herodotus’ “brilliance,” then, is often inspired by the tightly-woven texture of Herodotus’ narrative. ABSTRACT A Director’s Approach to Euripides’ Hecuba Christopher F. Peck, M.F.A. Mentor: DeAnna Toten Beard, Ph.D. This thesis explores a production of Euripides’ Hecuba as it was directed by Christopher Peck. Chapter One articulates a unique Euripidean dramatic structure to demonstrate the contemporary viability of Euripides’ play. Chapter Two utilizes this dramatic structure as the basis for an aggressive analysis of themes inherent in the production. Chapter Three is devoted to the conceptualization of this particular production and the relationship between the director and the designers in pursuit of this concept. Chapter Four catalogs the rehearsal process and how the director and actors worked together to realize the dramatic needs of the production. Finally Chapter Five is a postmortem of the production emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of the final product of Baylor University’s Hecuba. In this paper, we unearth from ancient Greece one of the oldest portraits of malingering in Western literature. Summary: The kidnapping of Helen of Troy triggered a military alliance within Greece against the Trojans. Odysseus, king of Ithaca, feigned madness in order to avoid being recruited. Palamedes, in a manoeuvre that risked the life of Odysseus’ son Telemachus, succeeded in unmasking him. Eventually, the cunning Odysseus would take revenge. We review classical texts from Greek and Roman authors concerning these mythical deeds and establish the diagnosis of malingering after excluding mimics. Key messages: Odysseus’ attempt at deception provides one of the oldest depictions of this behaviour in written history. We suggest using the expression “Revenge on Palamedes” to define the relatively common phenomenon of retaliation against a doctor who has diagnosed malingering. -

In Greek mythology, the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Achaeans (Greeks) after Paris of Troy took Helen Trojan War from her husband Menelaus king of Sparta. The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology and has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably through Homer's Iliad. The Iliad relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy; its sequel, the Odyssey describes Odysseus's journey home. Other parts of the war are described in a cycle of epic poems, which have survived through fragments. Episodes from the war provided material for Greek tragedy and other works of Greek literature, and for Roman poets including Virgil and Ovid. The war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, after Eris, the goddess of strife and discord, gave them a golden apple, sometimes known as the Apple of Discord, marked "for the fairest". Zeus sent the goddesses to Paris, who judged that Aphrodite, as the "fairest", should receive the apple. Elegy with Epic Consequences: Elegiac Themes in Statius’ Thebaid A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences by Carina Moss B.A. Bucknell University April 2020 Committee Chairs: Lauren D. Ginsberg, Ph.D., Kathryn J. Gutzwiller, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation examines the role of elegy in the Thebaid by Statius, from allusion at the level of words or phrases to broad thematic resonance. It argues that Statius attributes elegiac language and themes to characters throughout the epic, especially women. Statius thus activates certain women in the epic as disruptors, emphasizing the ideological conflict between the genres of Latin love elegy and epic poetry. While previous scholarship has emphasized the importance of Statius’ epic predecessors, or the prominence of tragic allusion in the plot, my dissertation centers the role of elegy in this epic. First, I argue that Statius relies on allusion to the genre of elegy to signal the true divine agent of the civil war at Thebes: Vulcan. Vulcan’s erotic jealousy over Venus’ affair with Mars leads him to create the Necklace of Harmonia. Imbued with elegiac resonance, the necklace comes to Argia with corrupted elegiac imagery. Statius characterizes Argia within the dynamic of the elegiac relicta puella and uses this framework to explain Argia’s gift of the necklace to Eriphyle and her advocacy for Argos’ involvement in the war. By observing the full weight of the elegiac imagery in these scenes, I show that Argia mistakenly causes the death of Polynices and the devastation at Thebes as the result of Vulcan’s elegiac curse.
