The Laodamia Myth
APPENDIX: THE LAODAMIA MYTH Most of the testimony we have on the Laodamia myth is from relative ly late sources. While we know of treatments that predate poem 68, it is not possible to establish in any detail which versions of the myth these represented. Homer (//. 2. 698-701) gives no details beyond Protesilaus' death and does not even name the widow, describing her only as ~1L~t8pucp7Ji;. According to Pausanias ( 4.2. 7), Protesilaus' wife was called Polydora in the Cypria. Pausanias says that in this poem the widow took her own life but does not make it clear whether this act followed Pro tesilaus' death or his return to the Underworld after the reunion. The word Pausanias uses of her suicide, lmxot'tota~!i(uv, "to slay over or in succession to a corpse,'' makes it unlikely that the Cypn·a dealt with the version in which she dies following the image of her husband into the fire. The few surviving fragments from Euripides' tragedy Protesilaus, of uncertain date, do little to shed light on the episodes and incidents of the play. According to the brief synopsis of the play that has been preserved (Schol. Aristid. p. 671 ), Protesilaus left Laodamia on their wedding day. After his death he obtained permission to return to his wife for a single day. The synopsis makes no mention of Laodamia's suicide or of the image. One fragment is especially tantalizing (fr. 655, Nauck2): oux &v 1tpo80£11v xot£1tEp <i~uxov ~O..ov. If <i~uxov means ''inanimate'' here, it could be a reference to the image that Laodamia made. -

E-mail: [email protected] 5Corresponding author Abstract A newly discovered, third species of the genus Lamproptera (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) is described, 183 years after the second currently recognised species was first named. Lamproptera paracurius Hu, Zhang & Cotton sp. n., from N.E. Yun- nan, China, is based on marked differences in external morphology and male genital structure. The species is confirmed as a member of the genus, and detailed comparisons are made with other taxa included in the genus. Keys to Lamproptera species based on external characters and male genitalia are included. Key words: Leptocircini, new species, Dongchuan, Yunnan, China Introduction The dragontails, genus Lamproptera Gray, 1832 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae: Leptocircini), are the smallest papilionid butterflies found in tropical Asia (Tsukada & Nishiyama 1980b). -

Older interpretations tended to criticize the final stories about Ar- tayctes and Artembares as anticlimactic or inappropriate: Did Herodotus forget himself here, or were the stories intended as interludes, preludes to further narrative?2 Entirely opposite is the praise accorded Herodotus in a recent commentary on Book 9: “The brilliance of Herodotus as a writer and thinker is mani- fest here, as the conclusion of the Histories both brings together those themes which have permeated the entire work and, at the same time, alludes to the new themes of the post-war world.” 3 More recent appreciation for Herodotus’ “brilliance,” then, is often inspired by the tightly-woven texture of Herodotus’ narrative. In particular it focuses on the way in which Ovid problematizes how we define myth and poetry versus science and philosophy. It examines how Ovid generates a parallel between the form and content of the text in order to depict a world where abstract scientific principles can become personified deities. This work will seek to reevaluate the impact of Greek Philosophy on Roman poetry through extending the series of intertexts which we may observe Ovid alluding to. Parsons Entomology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County 900 Exposition Blvd., LosAngeles, California 90007, U.S.A.*' (Received December 13, 1995) Abstract In order to reappraise the interrelationships of genera in the tribe Troidini, and to test the resultant theory of troidine evolution against biogeographical data a cladistic analysis of troidine genera was performed. Data were obtained mainly from immature stages, providing characters that appeared to be more reliable than many "traditional" adult characters. A single cladogram hypothesising phylogenetic relation ships of the troidine genera was generated. This differs markedly from cladograms obtained in previous studies that used only adult characters. However, the cladogram appears to fit well biogeographical data for the Troidini in terms of vicariance biogcography, especially as this relates to the general hypotheses of Gondwanaland fragmentation and continental drift events advanced by recent geological studies. The genus Ornithoptera is shown to be distinct from Troides. Based on input data drawn equally from immature stages and adult characters, a single cladogram hypothesising the likely phylogeny of Ornithoptera species was generated. With minor weighting of a single important adult character (male
