To appropriately report on the Keewatin Street renamed to Dr. Jose Rizal Way 7 activities and accomplishments of the Chapter KOR Youth Recognition Awards Night 8 Other Programs and events for 2008 9 and it’s membership, this report is presented in Special Notes and Accomplishments for the 2008 Year 10 newsletter form. It is intended to be not only Rizal Day Celebrations 2008 14 informative but enjoyable to read. It has been a KOR Winnipeg Chapter Inc. Plan of Act ion 2009 17 true honor to serve such an active Chapter and have the opportunity to collaborate on worthwhile and significant projects with individuals of noble from the past year, the report begins with the last intentions. I would like to extend my appreciation activity of 2007. to the contributors of this report (they are acknowledge accordingly). To provide continuity Rizal Day Celebration 2007 By Tess Dizon Ang Peryodiko editor and Sir Rev Neil Parado KGOR The Knights of Rizal, Winnipeg Chapter, Inc., and Part II of the Rizal Day Celebration, which was the Ladies of the Knights of Rizal solemnly coordinated by Sir Dr. Tom Colina, KCR, Chapter commemorated the 111th Anniversary of the Commander, Sir Rev. Dr. Neil Parado, KCR, Area Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the foremost Commander for Western Canada, Sir Felino de National Hero of the Philippines, with a twofold Jesus, KCR, Exchequer, and Sir Manny Fabre, KCR, celebration. The first part which started at 2:00 Chapter Advisor, included Dinner and Dance, P.M. on Sunday, Decemb er 30th , consisted of the Ceremonial Rites and Presentation of Awards, at Wreath-Laying at the Everlasting Granite Memorial 6:30 P.M. in the Philippine-Canadian Centre of Bench Marker at Dr. Jose P. Rizal Garden of Manitoba. This occasion also served as the Serenity, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens on 4000 KNIGHTS’ CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR’S PARTY . Portage Avenue . The Coordinators of Part I were The Program, emceed by Sir Felino de Jesus and Sir Mr. Andrew Earle, Manager for Funeral Services, Terry Duguid, started with the Entrance of Colors. and Sir Edgar and Lady Rosabelle de Leon, KCR. Flag bearers were Sir Mohamed Alli, KCR, and Sir Art Domingo, KCR), followed by Sir Dr. Roland Page 2 KOR Winnipeg Chapter Annual Report 2008 Rizal day Celebration—Commemoration of Dr. Jose Rizal Matyrdom. Guzman, KGOR, Canada Region Advisor; Sir Dr. Anthems, Lupang Hinirang, and O Canada, was Rey Pagtakhan, KGOR, Western Canada Advisor; led by Lady Dr. Lydia Lucman, followed by the Sir Rev. Dr. Neil Parado, KCR, Area Commander for Invocation prayed by Sir Rev. Dr. Neil Parado. Western Canada; Sir Les Crisostomo, KCR, Western Canada Executive Officer; Sir Dr. Tom Colina, KCR, After dinner, catered by Sir Dino and Lourdes Chapter Commander; Sir Edgar de Leon, KCR, Miranda of Pampanga Restaurant, Sir Dr. Tom Deputy Chapter Commander; Sir Nap Ebora, KCR, Colina did the Opening Remarks and presided Chancellor; Sir Claro Venzon, KOR, Pursuivant; Sir at the INITIATION Ceremonial Rite. Sir Dr. Rey Jesus Angel Miguel Garcia, KOR, Interim Pagtakhan presided at the ELEVATION Pursuivant; Sir Felino de Jesus, KCR, Exchequer; Sir Ceremonial Rite; and Sir Dr. Roland presided at Rene Carino, KOR, Deputy Exchequer; Sir Eric the EXALTATION Ceremonial Rite. Orbeta, KCR, Deputy Pursuivant; Sir Manny Fabre, KCR, Chapter Advisor. The Singing of the National Initiated as new Knights of Rizal were Sirs Tony Bonifacio ( Posthumous ), Ramon Cairo and Chito Sta. Brigida. The following were elevated to the 2nd Degree with the rank of Knight Officer of Rizal ( KOR ) : Sirs Moises Ben, Jesus Angel Miguel Ga rcia, Ed Kean, MLA Kevin Lamoureux, and Romy Nazario. The following were exalted to the 3rd Degree with the rank of Knight Commander of Rizal ( KCR ) : Sirs Dr. Berhanu Balcha, Rene Carino, Terry Duguid, Philip Pascual and Claro Venzon. Sir Dr. Roland presided at the Necrological Service in honor of Sir Tony Bonifacio, KR, and The five knights elevated to the second degree. Irene Sir Milton Mestito KCR Archivist Guzman, Leah Magsino and Julie Javier are also current members of the Board. Lady Linda Sir Randy Viray KCR Auditor Cantiveros (wife of Sir Rod Cantiveros, KCR) stepped down as president to become Board Sir Mohamed Alli KCR Deputy Pursuivant Advisor. The entire Filipino Canadian community of Winnipeg mourned the death of Lady Linda on Sir Rene Carino KCR Deputy Exchequer March 2008 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Page 4 KOR Winnipeg Chapter Annual Report 2008 KOR Sponsored Senior’s Wellness Seminars and Filipino Canadian Senior’s Cultural Project By Sir Dr. Rev Neil Parado KGOR Area Commander for Western Canada Way back in 2002 the late Sir Ric Medina, Chapter Celebration was held to honor the elderly of Commander of the Winnipeg Chapter of the various Ethnic Groups and Organizations. Knights of Rizal, with the recommendation of Sir Dr. Roland Guzman, KGOR, Regional Deputy Through the initiative of Sir John Gano, Deputy Commander for Canada, and Sir Dr. Romy Chapter Commander, Sir Rev.     Facts about Rizal It sounds absurd but there are people who are spreading statements that Adolf Hitler of Germany and Mao Zedong of China were sons of Jose Rizal. This is absolutely a hoax. Monuments in honor of Jose Rizal were erected in various parts of the world like Madrid, Spain; Wilhelmsfeld, Germany; Jinjiang, Fujian, China; Chicago, Cherry Hill Township, San Diego, Seattle, U.S.A.; Mexico City, Mexico; Lima, Peru; Litomerice, Czech Republic; and Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Three animal species were named after Rizal; Draco rizali, a species of flying dragon, Rachophorous rizali, a species of toad and Apogonia rizali, a beetle species. Rizal's statue in Jinjiang, Fujian, China is enshrined in a 5-hectare park built and named in his honor. The monument made of the world-famous Jinjiang granite stones, stands 18.61 meters high, taller than the 12- meter high Rizal statue in Luneta An exact replica of the Manila monument of the Philippines’ national hero Jose Rizal is built at the heart of this southern Chinese city, It also stands as a remembrance to his great, great grandfather, Domingo Lamco of Zhang-Guo province, who was once a resident and citizen of this great land. Construction of the monument began in 2002. Rizal Shrine was inaugurated on Jan. 23, 2003 in Siongque Village, Jinjiang City, Fujian Province, China. The shrine was built to commemorate Dr. Rizal’s Chinese ancestral roots. It symbolizes the strong bond of friendship between the Philippines and China The national hero is the direct descendant of Chinese trader Cua Yi Lam, who immigrated from Siongque ("Zhang-Guo" in Mandarin Chinese) to the Philippines in the later part of the 17th century.

On the contrary, a lot of activities were organized by the Knights, their affiliated counterparts and befriended organizations. Invitations After the visit of our Supreme Commander, Sir Reghis Romero II and some of the board mem- bers, end of May, there were several Philippine Independence Day celebrations which were Calendar attended by Knights of our Chapter. Of course, the birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal on 19 June is an- Board coordinates & other yearly milestone, which was traditionally remembered in the venue of the Philippine members Embassy by the Belgian chapters of the Knights together with the Kababaihang Rizalistas, Brussels and Las Damas de Rizal, Belgium. The latter chapter participated for the first time since it was only created a few months earlier. Before the summer holidays, the four Belgian Chapters jointly invited everybody to listen to “Pop-A-Pella” an arrangement by the A Cappella Manila choir in the St. Rémi Church, St. Jans-Molenbeek. Even during the summer months, events were organized. New members were inducted by Las Damas de Rizal, Belgium on August 31st at the Courtyard Marriott.
