  • Mano Po: Chinoys in Philippine Pop Movies By: Charles Chua and Talizta Ang
Mano Po: Chinoys in Philippine Pop Movies By: Charles Chua and Talizta Ang Way back in 2002, a local film released around Christmas time won the hearts of moviegoers all over the country. This film then proceeded to garner an accumulation of several awards, honors and commendations because of its deep cultural references and implications. This film was Mano Po, a heavily political movie with a drama plot that supposedly gives a glimpse of the Chinese, Chinese Filipino and Filipino communities and their problems in coexisting with one another, primarily because of the differences in culture that no amount of compromise can ever seem to mend. These clashes in culture were popular with movie-goers and inevitably spawned several sequels. The original Mano Po is the story of the affluent Go clan and its “black sheep” Richelle. As she strains against the bonds of Chinese tradition that keep her from what she truly wants, she becomes intertwined in a series of events that puts the reputation of her clan and its Filipino political relations in peril. Narrowly escaping with her life after the ordeal, the lessons learned by her family members pushes the clan to reexamine their priorities and ultimately turn over a new leaf in their lifestyles. Like the original, the first sequel was met with much success. The next movie in the series, Mano Po 2: My Home, is a completely new story about a rich Chinese businessman with three separate wives. His untimely demise, however, only heightens the already immense tensions that have been present among the ladies for so long.

6 A Dirty Affair Political Melodramas of Democratization Ferdinand Marcos was ousted from the presidency and exiled to Hawaii in late February 1986,Confidential during a four-day Property event of Universitycalled the “peopleof California power” Press revolution. The event was not, as the name might suggest, an armed uprising. It was, instead, a peaceful assembly of thousands of civilians who sought to protect the leaders of an aborted military coup from reprisal by***** the autocratic state. Many of those who gathered also sought to pressure Marcos into stepping down for stealing the presi- dential election held in December,Not for Reproduction not to mention or Distribution other atrocities he had commit- ted in the previous two decades. Lino Brocka had every reason to be optimistic about the country’s future after the dictatorship. The filmmaker campaigned for the newly installed leader, Cora- zon “Cory” Aquino, the widow of slain opposition leader Ninoy Aquino. Despite Brocka’s reluctance to serve in government, President Aquino appointed him to the commission tasked with drafting a new constitution. Unfortunately, the expe- rience left him disillusioned with realpolitik and the new government. He later recounted that his fellow delegates “really diluted” the policies relating to agrarian reform. He also spoke bitterly of colleagues “connected with multinationals” who backed provisions inimical to what he called “economic democracy.”1 Brocka quit the commission within four months. His most significant achievement was intro- ducing the phrase “freedom of expression” into the constitution’s bill of rights and thereby extending free speech protections to the arts. Three years after the revolution and halfway into Mrs.

The news, in fact, turns our attention to the lake of Tagaytay, south of Manila where the Taal Volcano, asleep for more than forty years, has just woken up and threatens to explode at any moment. But shouldn’t we also look at this frightening natural spectacle as a surprisingly evocative image of what is going on in the hearts of the children of the foundation? The work of all the foundation’s educators is a similar work to the one of the volcanologists who observe with admiration and anguish at the same time every little sign that the volcano sends out. The wounded hearts of the children of the foundation are as unpredictable as these irascible hills: a deeply hidden feeling of resentment, a fi re ready to erupt at any moment, an anger that explodes... but they can also - and above all - be a marvelous spectacle when these breathless hearts come back to life and offer us the most beautiful lessons of hope.
