United Airlines MEC Approves Contract Extension

United recently announced that it has reached an Agreement in Principle with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) for a contract extension covering the airline’s more than 12,000 pilots more than a year ahead of the amendable date of the current contract. The agreement is subject to a ratification process which includes final documentation, review, and consideration by the ALPA Master Executive Council.

“The fact that we were able to reach this Agreement in Principle in fewer than 30 days is a direct result of the positive, collaborative relationship between ALPA leadership and United,” said Executive Vice President Human Resources and Labor Relations Mike Bonds. “We appreciate the hard work of the company and union negotiating teams in helping us reach an Agreement in Principle that will benefit pilots and United.”

10 | Aero Crew News Back to Contents Adaptive to say the least, Great Lakes provides prospective airline pilots with a unique opportunity. Since the Federal ruling on increasing pilot hours, Great Lakes has restruc- tured its company to provide a path for pilots entering the industry. By reconfiguring some of their aircraft, they are able to utilize FAR 135 hiring minimums in an FAR 121 operation. This provides low time pilots a theoretical “foot in the door” to build valuable turbine experience operating within a 121 environment. They will gain the flight time required for the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or Restricted-ATP (R-ATP) certification and will then have the ability to start building the required time to upgrade to a 121 Captain.
