This weekend we celebrate the of . After the Res- urrection the Apostles were still doubtful, even though the Risen Christ had appeared to them for forty days. It was not enough for them to have met Christ Risen in person, they were still fearful and had doubts. They were locked in the upper room, socially distanced from others out of fear.

We are in the same situation. This past year we have been in lock- down, we have been socially distanced. The confusion we experience is described in the first reading of the Vigil Mass of Pentecost – when the people had turned away from the East and became, literally, “disoriented”, they no longer understood one another, there was mass confusion.

This is the experience of Babel – confusion, doubt, fear, panic.

Pentecost is the antidote to this virus. The Holy Spirit, who descended upon the Apostles, con- firmed in their hearts the love of God, and allowed them to speak a language that all could under- stand. This language is Love. The gift of the Holy Spirit gives us the capacity to love, and love conquers all fear, doubt, panic, worry and confusion. Come Holy Spirit, Fill the Hearts of thy Faith- ful, enkindle in Us the Fire of Thy Love.

This coming Thursday, May 27th we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with our 27 Can- didates. Bishop Michael Saporito will preside the Liturgy at 6:30pm. Please pray for the Candidates.

Monday, May 24th is our Parish Feast Day, the Memorial of the Virgin Mary under the title Mother of the Church - “Beata Mariæ Virginis, Ecclesiæ Matris”,

Instituting this memorial, said:

‘As a caring guide to the emerging Church Mary had already begun her mission in the Upper Room, praying with the Apostles while awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:14). In this sense, in the course of the centuries, Christian piety has honored Mary with various titles, in many ways equivalent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and also, as “Mother of the Church” as is used in the texts of spiritual authors as well as in the Magisterium of Popes Benedict XIV and Leo XIII.’

Join on Monday, May 24th at 7:00pm for us for a Special Mass in honor of Our Lady Mother of the Church. Mass will be followed by the Rosary, Benediction, and a light reception in the McCarthy Center. .

Pentecost One of the biblical names for Pentecost id “the of firstfruits.” A “firstfruit” is the first of a crop to ripen. These were offered to God in thanksgiving for the harvest. We usually don’t think of this time of year as a harvest season. But in mild climates, such as the lands around the Mediterranean, the apricots, cherries and strawberries are ripe now. So are wheat and other grains. The grain harvest is the principal harvest of the year, the crop that can feed people all year long if it is abundant enough. Even in the north, gardens yield asparagus, rhubarb, the first peas and spinach and other salad greens. Winter’s fast has become springtime’s feast. With the Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” (“With a Fa- In the First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul uses the ther’s Heart”), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary imagery of Pentecost to speak of the resurrection of Jesus: “Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Uni- those who have died.
