My Prayer For My Christian Friend on Islamic New Year’s Day - Nigar Friday, 21st August, 2020. It was the first day of the month of Muharram—New Year’s Day according to the Islamic calendar. I received greetings on the occasion from some Muslim friends. One of these, sent by an elderly person, seemed the best. It said something like this: “Happy Islamic New Year. Let us bring in the new year with prayers that Allah ends the coronavirus.” I endorsed this suggestion with an “Ameen”. With much of humankind presently living in fear of the virus and their lives being majorly affected by it, this suggestion seemed most apt. It made me feel upbeat, and I stored this message in my heart. Later that day, my friend Dolcy received a call from a friend of his—let me call him ‘Vick’— who lives in another city. Vick is a Christian priest. One of his passions is to promote understanding and meaningful, positive interaction between people from different religious backgrounds. Dolcy and Vick often speak with each other on the phone. Sometimes, I also chat a bit with Vick. Just some days ago when I spoke with Vick, he had mentioned the recipe of a herbal drink to build immunity in the hope of keeping the coronavirus at bay. He told me that he had the drink every day, after supper. Vick lives in a well-protected campus. I assumed that he did not have to face many physical challenges. He did not need to go out every day to earn a living. -

Traven Cultural Orientation: FAIL! Unlike this clueless tourist, we hope that you will start the journey of understanding and enjoying Mexico and her culture. It will take a lifetime! That’s why we called our program Peregrinando which means, “ taking a journey, a pilgrimage.” This program is part of a two year orientation for new workers . On the next page, you will see a timeline. It includes formal language study, journaling and a coaching program. We hope that you will develop skills of observation and sympathetic questioning that will serve you throughout your career. Please journal your observations and discuss your experience with your coach each week. Both of you can keep a checklist to record your progress. The activities can be done in any order. Some of the activities will be easy to do, others may require a translator for you to complete. If you would like to substitute another activity or reading for one we have chosen, please talk with your coach first. Parliament still meets in Kuala Lumpur, but most ministries are located in Putrajaya. Major Cities: Kuala Lumpur is the only city with a population greater than 1 million persons (1,305,792 according to the most recent census in 2000). Other major cities include Johor Bahru (642,944), Ipoh (536,832), and Klang (626,699). Independence: Peninsular Malaysia attained independence as the Federation of Malaya on August 31, 1957. Calendar of Observances 2021 The increasingly pluralistic population of the United States is made up of many different ethnic, cultural, faith and religious communities. To enhance mutual understanding among groups and promote inclusive communities, the ADL offers this resource as a tool to increase awareness of and respect for religious obligations and ethnic and cultural festivities that may affect students, colleagues and neighbors in your community. Religious Observations The calendar includes significant religious observances of the major faiths represented in the United States. It can be used when planning school exam schedules and activities, workplace festivities and community events. Note that Bahá’í, Jewish and Islamic holidays begin at sundown the previous day and end at sundown on the date listed. National and International Holidays The calendar notes U.S. holidays that are either legal holidays or observed in various states and communities throughout the country. Important national and international observances that may be commemorated in the U.S. are also included. Calendar System The dates of secular holidays are based on the Gregorian calendar, which is commonly used for civil dating purposes. Many religions and cultures follow various traditional calendar systems that are often based on the phases of the moon with occasional adjustments for the solar cycle. Therefore, specific Gregorian calendar dates for these observances will differ from year to year. In addition, calculation of specific dates may vary by geographical location and according to different sects within a religion. The History of May Day and Workers' Rights
1 THE HISTORY OF MAY DAY AND WORKERS’ RIGHTS Around the world the 1st May is celebrated as an annual festival of workers’ rights and solidarity. Originally the day was a pagan celebration of the return of summer. Persecution of May Day began in the 17th century when European rulers backed by the churches attempted to ban the celebrations as being immoral. However many of the traditions continued as the European peasantry had stronger ties to each other and to nature than they had to their rulers and the churches. In the nineteenth century as the industrial revolution spread around the world, men, women and children endured very long working days, often twelve hours or more. The idea of having a workers’ holiday celebration was born in Australia. In 1856 Australian workers organised a day of complete stoppage of work together with speeches and entertainment as a demonstration in favour of an eight hour working day. Thirty years on in the United States on 3rd May 1886, Chicago police opened fire on unarmed strikers, killing 6 and wounding many more. The following day Chicago workers gathered in Haymarket Square to demonstrate against continuing police brutality. As the police attempted to clear the square, a bomb exploded, killing 7 policemen. In a show trial 8 anarchist leaders were convicted of murder even although only one of them was present at the time of the blast and he was addressing the crowd. Four of the leaders were executed, one took his own life in prison; 3 others were later pardoned. The executed Chicago trade unionists became known as the Haymarket Martyrs. -

Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, All Saints Eve. I bet you recognize the first two, but not the last. Perhaps because it is not commonly called All Saints Eve, but Halloween; which means the Eve of All Hallows, or of All Saints Just as Christmas Eve has absolutely no meaning whatsoever without Christmas, and New Years Eve is only a means of ushering in the New Year, so too, Halloween in and of itself is meaningless without the celebration of All Saints Day, for which it is a preparation. Halloween was originally the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), marking the end of summer and the beginning of winter, a time of year that was associated with death. Celts believed on the night of October 31st the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, and the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. The fears and superstitions of Celtic tribes were evangelized and superseded by the Christian experience of life and death. As the Church celebrated the lives of her Saints and Martyrs on November 1st, Samhain was no longer celebrated as a pagan feast, but as a preparation for All Saints Day. The Church can mock the Devil, and laugh at goblins and demons, because Christ Jesus our Lord has overcome Evil. Protestant countries, following the lead of Martin Luther in the Sixteenth Century, eliminated the celebration of All Saints Day, to give more importance to Jesus Christ. The religious practice of praying to the Saints was considered a man-made invention, detracting from worship of Jesus Christ. -
