LIST OF GENES IN PHASEOLUS VULGARIS FOR RESISTANCE TO VIRUSES R. Provvidenti New York State Agricultural Experiment Station Cornell University, Geneva, NY 14456 Since 1940, a number of studies have been conducted in the USA and abroad to elucidate the inheritance of resistance to viral diseases of Phaseolus vulgaris L. Here, the 26 known single genes for resistance to 16 viruses are tabulated and pertinent references included. Symbols are proposed for genes conferring resistance to alfalfa mosaic virus, bean pod mottle virus, bean southern mosaic virus, beet curly top virus, and tobacco ringspot virus. No symbols were previously assigned to these genes. The symbol byji has been replaced with cyy, since the severe strain of bean yellow mosaic virus is now regarded as a strain of clover yellow vein virus. Gene symbol (synonym) Character, virus, and reference *Amv Single dominant, confers a high level of resistance to a strain of alfalfa mosaic virus (Wade & Zaumeyer, 1940). *Amv-2 A duplicate of Amv. independently inherited, for resistance to the same strain of alfalfa mosaic virus (Wade & Zaumeyer, 1940). bÇ-1, bc-1^ Single recessive, strain-specific alíeles, temperature insensitive, for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Drijfhout, 1978). bÇ.:2, bc-2^ Single recessive, strain-specific alíeles, temperature insensitive, for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Drijfhout, 1978). bc-3 Single recessive, strain-specific, temperature insensitive, for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Drijfhout, 1978). bc-u Single recessive, strain-unspecific, necessary for the expression of strain-specific genes for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Drijfhout, 1978). Bcm Single dominant, temperature sensitive, for resistance to blackeve cowoea mosaic virus. Tightly linked, if not identical, to the 1 gene for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Provvidenti, Gonsaîves & Taiwo, 1983; Kyle & Provvidenti, 1987). Gene symbol (synonym) Character, virus, and reference *Bpm Single dominant for resistance to bean pod mottle virus (Thomas & Zaumeyer, 1950). *Bsm Single dominant for resistance to bean southern mosaic virus (Zaumeyer & Harter, 1943). By Single dominant, strain specific, for resistance to pea mosaic virus. considered to be a strain of bean yellow mosaic virus (Schroeder & Provvidenti, 1968). Ey:¿ Single dominant, temperature sensitive, strain-unspecific for resistance to bean vellow mosaic virus (Dickson & Natti, 1968). Cam Single dominant, temperature sensitive, for resistance to cowoea aphid-borne mosaic virus. Tightly linked, if not identical, to the 1 gene for resistance to bean common mosaic virus (Provvidenti, Gonsalves &Taiwo, 1983; Kyle & Provvidenti, 1987). *Ctv Single dominant for resistance to beet curlv top virus (Schultz & Dean, 1947). *ctv-2 Single recessive for resistance to beet curlv too virus. Inherited independently of £îv (Schultz & Dean, 1947). *£y V (ti.yi3.) Single recessive for a high level of resistance to clover vellow vein virus, formerly known as the severe, necrotic, or pod-distorting strain of bean yellow mosaic virus (Provvidenti & Schroeder, 1973; Tu, 1983). Hsw Single dominant, temperature sensitive, for resistance to watermelon mosaic virus 2. Very tightly linked, if not identical, to the i gene for bean common mosaic virus (Kyle & Provvidenti, 1987). i Single dominant, temperature sensitive, for resistance to bean common mosaic virus. Tightly linked, if not identical, to Bern. Cam, and Hsw (Ali, 1950; Kyle, Dickson & Provvidenti, 1986). Mrf Single dominant for immunity to bean ruoose mosaic virus. At the same locus as Mrf^ and mrf (Machado & Pinchinat, 1975). Gene symbol (synonym) Character, virus, and reference Mli At the same locus as Mrf and mrf. Recessive to Md for immunity, but dominant to rnrf for susceptibility to bean rugose mosaic virus (IVIachado & Pinchinat, 1975) Pmv Single incompletely dominant for resistance to peanut mottle virus (Provvidenti & Chirco, 1987). Smv Single incompletely dominant for resistance to sovbean mosaic virus (Provvidenti, Gonsalves & Ranalli, 1982). Tm Single dominant for immunity to tobacco mosaic virus (Thompson, Lower & Thornberry, 1952). 'try. Single recessive for resistance to tobacco ringsoot virus (Tu, 1983).
