Sierra Hull debuted at the Grand Ole Opry at age 10. At age 13, she signed with Rounder Records, issued her debut album, Secrets, and garnered the first of a near decade of nominations for Mandolin Player of the Year. Hull played at the Kennedy Center at age 16 and performed at the White House at age 20. By 2016, she tapped legendary Bluegrass musician Bela Fleck to produce her third album, Weighted Mind, which was nominated for a Grammy. Months later, she became the first woman to win the title of Mandolin Player of the Year -- which she has won two additional times -- from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Hull continues to guest with friends and legends, and has joined such icons as the Indigo Girls, Garth Brooks, and Gillian Welch; she has performed at the Country Music Awards with Brad Paisley, Marty Stuart, and Ricky Skaggs, who helped inspire her first album. This year, she releases her album 25 Trips. Ierra Hull Est Née Le 27 Septembre 1991 À Byrdstown Dans Le Tennessee
ierra Hull est née le 27 Septembre 1991 à Byrdstown dans le Tennessee. S Elle grandit dans une famille de musiciens et comme beaucoup de familles américaines, Sierra assiste aux offices dans Oak Grove Baptiste Church, chante avec son frère aîné Cody et sa mère, accompagnée par son père à la guitare rythmique. La famille écoute le bluegrass avec des artistes comme Doyle Lawson, Flatt & Scruggs, Tony Rice. Sierra va apprécier aussi Jimmy Martin et bien sur Alison Krauss. Le premier instrument avec lequel joue Sierra est le violon, mais devant la difficulté, instrument trop grand pour elle, elle choisit de jouer de la Mandoline; elle a alors 7 ans. Rapidement elle devient prodige et l’association IBMA, l’invite à se produire dans un mini- Showcase lors d’un festival de Bluegrass Music à Louisville dans le Kentucky. C’est au cours d’un événement créé par IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) qu’elle rencontre Ron Block, joueur de banjo et de guitare qui fait partie du Band d’Alison Krauss. Ron favorise une rencontre avec Alison. Ron Block Alison se lie d’amitié avec Sierra et va l’inviter à se produire avec elle sur la scène du Grand Ole Opry; Sierra à tout juste 8 ans. Sur la scène du Grand Ole Opry avec Alison Kraus Alors qu’elle joue professionnellement depuis 10 ans, elle signe son premier contrat d’enregistrement avec le label Rounder Records. A 11 ans, accompagnée par Alison Krauss et Dan Tyminski, elle va se produire à une soirée à la Maison Blanche le 21 Novembre 2011. -

It’s really just an excuse for bluegrass pickers from all over Texas and Louisiana to descend on Grapeland and jam for a whole weekend. Check the display ad on page 4 of this issue. Nominations for 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards Announced Balsam Range, Sam Bush Band, The Earls of Leicester, Del McCoury Band, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers are the “Entertainer of the Year” nominees IBMA Announces 2019 Annual Inductees to the Bluegrass Hall of Fame: Mike Auldridge, Bill Emerson, The Kentucky Colonels Five Bluegrass Industry Innovators Announced as Recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award Nashville, TN, July 24, 2019 –Nominees for the 2019 International Bluegrass Music Awards were announced today in Nashville, Tennessee. The extraordinary talent of the performers nominated for “Entertainer of the Year”- Balsam Range, Sam Bush Band, The Earls of Leicester, Del McCoury Band, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers - is evident, with 24 Bluegrass Music Awards nominations among the five nominees this year. Multiple nominations for Sister Sadie, Carolina Blue, Mile Twelve, Molly Tuttle, Missy Raines and Rhonda Vincent also are notable on this year’s list of nominees. Results of the balloting will be revealed at the International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday, September 26, at the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Also announced today were three inductees into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame: prolific dobro innovator Mike Auldridge, influential banjo player Bill Emerson, and influential West Coast band The Kentucky Colonels; additionally, five people who have made significant contributions to bluegrass music were named as recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award: broadcaster Katy Daley, label founder Mickey Gamble, former Executive Director of IBMA Dan Hays, musician Allen Mills, and Japanese bluegrass magazine Moonshiner. Ricky Skaggs
Ricky Skaggs --A life full of music. That’s the story of Ricky Skaggs. By age twenty-one, he was already considered a “recognized master” of one of America’s most demanding art forms, but his career took him in other directions, catapulting him to popularity and success in the mainstream of country music. His life’s path has taken him to various musical genres, from where it all began in bluegrass music, to striking out on new musical journeys, while still leaving his musical roots intact. Ricky struck his first chords on a mandolin over 50 years ago, and this 15-time Grammy Award winner continues to do his part to lead the recent roots revival in music. With 12 consecutive Grammy-nominated classics behind him, all from his own Skaggs Family Records label (Bluegrass Rules! in 1998, Ancient Tones in 1999, History of the Future in 2001, Soldier of the Cross, Live at the Charleston Music Hall, and Big Mon: The Songs of Bill Monroe in 2003, Brand New Strings in 2005, Instrumentals in 2007, Salt of the Earth with The Whites in 2008, Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and 1947 in 2009 and Ricky Skaggs Solo: Songs My Dad Loved along with Mosaic in 2010), the diverse and masterful tones made by the gifted Skaggs come from a life dedicated to playing music that is both fed by the soul and felt by the heart. Ricky was born on July 18, 1954 in Cordell, Kentucky, and received his first mandolin at the age of five after his father, Hobert, heard him harmonizing with his mother from across the house as he played with his toys. -

Da jeg kjøpte min første banjo i en alder av 20 år fant jeg gjennom dette instrumentet også fort frem til bluegrass-sjangeren, og siden den gang har denne musikken i stor grad preget min musikalske retning. Arbeidet med denne oppgaven har krevd mye tid og innsatsvilje, men det har fremfor alt vært veldig inspirerende å kunne fordype seg enda mer i tematikken rundt denne musikksjangeren. Jeg vil gi en stor takk til Ragnhild Brøvig-Hanssen for kjempegod veiledning gjennom lærerike og opplysende samtaler, gode referanser og konstruktive tilbakemeldinger. Takk til Henrik Østgaard for korrekturlesing, og for mange interessante samtaler over en kaffekopp på Blindern.
