3 CHERRY RED RECORDS | COMBINED COUNTIES LEAGUE | PREMIER DIVISION 2019-20

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Knights Community Stadium for this evenings Specsaver Surrey Senior Cup 1st Round tie.

We would like to welcome tonights opponents Westfield FC and hope their players, sup- porters and officials enjoy their stay with us this evening.

We would also like to welcome this evenings match officials, referee Mr Shaun Farrer and his assistants Mr Karl Parker and Mr Calum Edgcombe, and we hope they also enjoy their stay with us this evening.

First up, an apology, due to being swamped at work this is only a small, online only pro- gramme. It is not something we like doing, or want to do as a regular thing, but at the mo- ment, it is the best we can do. Also doesn’t help doing a load of work, and then then having it not saving!!

After the thrills of Saturday’s win over Lancing, where a Phil Page goal propelled us into the Fourth Round of the FA Vase and a new years trip to Christchurch (Dorset, not the largest city on the South island of New Zealand, although that would be fun), we are back in cup action.

Over the years the Surrey Senior Cup has not been good to us, with recent defeats against Sutton Utd 2-0, and prior to that penalty shoot out losses to both Epsom & Ewell and Wanderers.

Westfield are having another good season in the BetVictor South Cen- tral division, and currently lie in 6th position, and looking good for an- other tilt at promotion. Since they won the CCL a couple of seasons ago, they have consolidated their place at Step 4 and this and last sea- son have been one of the stronger sides in the division.

Darren and Donny will need the boys to be at their best tonight, as they look to progress to a 2nd Round tie away at Dorking Wanderers.

There is no game for us this weekend, as Sutton Utd are at home in the FA Trophy, so we end the decade with two trips to Wibbandune. On the 21st we face Colliers Wood Utd and on the 28th, its Balham.

Enough from me, enjoy the game and have safe trips home.

Westfield Football Club was formed in 1953 as Westfield Boys Club, playing in the Woking and District League.

The 1950s From the start the Club had success in the competitions it entered. Among the trophies won in the early years were the Surrey Youth Invitation Cup in 1953/54, the Surrey Junior Charity Cup in 1954/55 and 1955/56, the Surrey Junior Cup (at the first attempt) in 1955/56 and the Surrey Youth Cup in 1956/57.

Following several seasons in local league football, the Club made the break into Surrey Inter- mediate football using the present ground at Woking Park, Kingfield. Successes soon came and, after becoming League Champions and Cup winners on several occasions in the subse- quent seasons, the Club decided to apply for senior status. The application was accepted in 1964 and after one season in the Parthenon League, Westfield met the necessary ground grading requirements and joined the Surrey Senior League.

The 1960s Westfield’s future success in senior football sprang from their ability to attract the best local youngsters, and they were successful in winning the Surrey Youth Cup again in 1966/67 and 1969/70, and the Surrey Youth Shield in 1969/70 and 1970/71. This talent matured and there followed three tremendous seasons for the senior side, when they won the Surrey Senior League Cup in 1971/72, followed by the League and Cup double in 1972/73, and the League Championship again in 1973/74.

The 1970s and 1980s The Surrey Senior League was disbanded and reformed as the Com- bined Counties Football League in 1978, and Westfield FC became foun- der members and retained membership until 2018. Success, however, was more difficult to achieve and in recent times the closest the senior team came to honours was in 1989/90, when they lost the final of the Combined Counties League Cup to Hartley Wintney in extra time. West- field’s Youth team won the Surrey Youth League’s U18 Division Cup in 1978.

2000-2003 During the early 2000s, with former Woking player John Cassidy as man- ager, the senior side improved their league position, finishing sixth in season 2000/01.

That season saw the Club enter the FA Vase again, having only previously entered in 1974 for 3 seasons, performing be- yond expectations before losing in the Fourth Round to Ryman League Arle- sey Town, on the way beating Wantage Town, Sidley United, Lewes and Bowers United

Season 2002/03 saw Westfield enter the FA Cup for the first time, losing at home to Dorking in the Preliminary Round.

Westfield continued to compete at youth level and they won the Combined Counties Youth League Cup in 1991/92, as well as being runners-up in the League. Following the installation of floodlights in 1998, the U18 team joined the Southern Youth Floodlight League as mem- bers of the Western Division.

The Club also ran a Youth team playing in the West Surrey Boys League, winning the U14 Challenge Cup and Premier Division in 1999/00, the U15 Premier Division, Challenge Cup and Surrey County Cup in 2000/01, U15 Division 2 in 2002, the U16 Premier Divi- sion in 2001/02, and the U15 Division 2 in 2002/03.

2003-2006 Following the end of the 2003/04 season, Westfield lost both First and Reserve Team managers. John Cassidy moved to Frimley Green, and thereafter back to Farnham Town, and Graham Pope moved to Go- dalming & to manage their reserve team in the Suburban league. Westfield recruited Paul Donaghy from Guildford-based Mer- row as first-team manager, and Dave Robson – long-time Westfield player – took over the reserves.

At the end of 2005/06 Westfield were relegated to the 1st Division, due to new ground-grading regulations after a very acrimonious conflict with the league. Numerous commitments from league officials were reneged upon, and after months of appeals and meetings, Westfield had to accept their unwelcome fate.

After a mid-table Division 1 season and partly because of the league- enforced relegation, Manager Paul Donaghy decided to resign as First Team manager to join Godalming and Reserve Team manager Dave Robson also quit. The team of ex-player Martin Powell, ex-Spurs stal- wart David Howells and coach John Comer took over the running of the senior teams for the start of the 2007/08 season.

2007-2010 In the close season of 2007/08, following a highly credible 4th place finish, Martin resigned as man- ager due to personal circumstances; his departure signalled the exits of both David Howells and John Comer. In July 2008 the position of 1st Team Manager was filled by Steve Plunkett, the ex-Godalming Town Reserves boss, though he was replaced within 4 months by the returning Dave Robson, as the club attempted to rebuild following a mass exodus of players.

Dave Robson did a fine job stabilizing the club, but after an indifferent 2009/10 was replaced by joint managers, Craig Moore and John Comer.

Off the pitch there was good news, as building of the new facilities commenced in 2010/11 and it promised to be a good season as the management duo assembled the best squad since the 2008 season. However, despite some wonderful results, the team struggled to find con- sistency, and finished a disappointing 13th in the table. There was better news for the re- serves who finished 4th in the reserve league, and reached the final of the league cup, where they went down to double-winning side Mole Valley SCR.

2011-2015 During the summer of 2011, Craig Moore decided to step down to con- centrate on playing, leaving John Comer as sole manager. He promoted Kevin Bailey from the reserves to be his assistant, and following Dave Kelly’s resignation as reserve team manager appointed David Robert- son.

In May 2011 the old pitch was dug up and raised a metre, before being re-seeded and in June the old Clubhouse was demolished. The club moved into the new facilities in August 2011 with a thrilling opening match in the FA Cup against Peacehaven & Telscombe, in which the Sussex side eventually ran out 6-3 winners, in front of a crowd of 190. The following month a new record attendance for a league fixture at Woking Park was set when 325 witnessed the fixture against Guernsey.

The season saw another improvement on the pitch, where a position of 8th was achieved and the team reached a cup final for the first time in nearly 20 years. However they went down 4-2 to Warlingham on the day. The following season the Club gained promotion in third place, and played Walton Casuals Reserves in the final of the Surrey Premier Cup, going down 2 goals to 1 in a close game.

In season 2013/14, with John Comer continuing as manager, the Club had their best league finish since 1981, ending in fourth place.

With John Comer’s departure, Martin Beard was appointed for the 2014-15 season. After a run of indifferent results, Martin was replaced by Dan Snare, who improved the side to finish mid-table.

2016 to date For the 2016-17 season, Tony Reid was appointed manager, and enjoyed a stunning season, finish- ing second in the League behind Hartley Wintney and winning the League Cup in May. The follow- ing season the Club continued to play exciting, attacking football, scoring an amazing 145 goals, whilst conceding only 45, and became deserved Champions with a fantastic 106 league points.

As the 2018-19 season began, we said farewell to the Combined Counties League after 40 years of continuous competition, and started an exciting journey into Step 4 of non-league football. Having lost some key players from the previous campaign, it took several months for Tony Reid to find a settled side, but then after Christmas a wonderful run of 13 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats saw Westfield finish in fifth place, to gain a play-off place and our highest-ever league finish. A close semi-final play-off defeat to Bracknell Town did little to detract from a remarkable achievement, and the return of most of the 2018-19 squad bodes well for another great season.

?? Spot the Ball answer 13 Official Club Website: www.suttoncommonrovers.com Chairman and Life President Alan Salmon founded SCR F.C in 1978, when the club began life as INRAD FC, based in . The club entered a new era when Alan moved to Sutton and arranged sponsorship with his new neighbour, CENTRE 21 FC was born. This era saw the club running one Saturday side, three Sunday sides and three Youth sides. Centre 21's sponsorship continued until the club's youth players were no longer under 21 years old.

The club again sought new a identity, SUTTON COMMON ROAD FC was formed and sub- sequently abbreviated to SCR FC. Since then the club has had five major sponsors whose names have been incorporated into the clubs affiliated name: SCR PLOUGH (twice), SCR GRAPES, next the club's longest sponsor SCR LITTEN TREE (7 years) & finally SCR King- fisher, Ewell with whom we started our venture in Saturday football in 2004/05.

It was at this point that the club took the decision to revert back to using the SCR name alone, feeling that as we strive for continued promotion we needed to disassociate our- selves with the whole ‘pub team’ image. The club however did take sponsorship form the Fox & Hounds, Carshalton for the Sat first team in 2006/07, but the decision was made that the pub name would not be incorporated into our own, for the above reason…

The club entered yet another new era this season, with the introduction of a third Satur- day side (Messers Alex Avis & Tony Williams) and the 1’s moving to the Middlesex County FL (and a name change SUTTON COMMON ROVERS) in the pursuit of combined Counties football, having made an unsuccessful application from the Surrey South Eastern Combi- nation at the end of season 2006/07 having finished joint top (3rd on goal difference… -1 goal) A third place finish in the Middlesex County League Premier division in 07/08 meant that our promotion to the CCL was not assured but months of hard work & deter- mination from the management team SCR eventually secured a place for the clubs 1st time in their 30 year history at the league AGM in June 2008 and the reserves moved into the CCL reserve division under the guidance of Alex Avis & Justin Salmon.

Season 08/09 saw the latest name change of the club, to form MOLE VALLEY SCR FC re- flecting the area in which we played. Season 09/10 saw the club reach a Surrey Cup final, narrowly being defeated by Sutton United after a 1-1 extra time score line on penalties and in the same season compete in the FA Vase for the first time in our relatively short history. We finished Champions of Division One at the second time of asking, narrowly piping Worcester Park to the post in a fine run which saw us finish 3 points clear on the final match of the season, assuming as we believed, we were awarded the points from the postponed Coulsdon match who unfortunately were unable to field a side for our scheduled league game some weeks earlier.

?? SCR History 14 Official Club Website: www.suttoncommonrovers.com The following season saw the club play at our highest level to date, and make our FA Cup debut, although this lasted just one game, and ended in a 5-0 defeat against Chertsey Town. The club managed two seasons in the Premier Division, before being relegated back to Division 1, following a start to the season that saw 12 straight league defeats. The 2012/13 season started with a rebuilt side and expectations of consolidation, however a 20 game unbeaten run propelled us into runners up spot, and a much coveted promotion back to the Premier Division.

2013/14 started brightly, but went to the last game, and a point saw survival. It was the same last season, and although we lost, we still managed to survive. For the 2015/16 season, there has been a change of name to Sutton Common Rovers, and after much hard work by the Salmons, a return to Sutton, and a ground share with Sutton Utd.

2016/17 saw a 12th place league finish and the capture of the Southern Combination Cup

The following season, 2017/18 we recorded our highest ever placing, finishing 3rd in the Premier Division, and reached the semi final of both the Southern Combination Cup and the EL Records Premier Challenge Cup.

2018/19 was our best ever season, finishing runners up in the Premier division behind the powerful Chertsey Town side, winning the Premier Challenge Cup and finishing run- ners up in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup
