#TimeForHeroes

Tuesday 8th October 2019 MARGATE FC v FC Kick Off—7:45pm 2 Welcome

It has only been a couple of days since Jay and the players pulled off another emphatic win in the Emirates FA Cup beating Salisbury FC 4-2 in their back yard to add our name to the 4th round draw. Celebrations ran long into the night for the travelling Gate supporters and even the players managed to unwind for a couple of hours on the coach ride back to Kent. But now our attention turns back to the BetVictor Isthmian , and the visit of tonight’s opponents, Leatherhead.

We found out yesterday that our opponents in the 4th Qualifying Rd will be Oxford City, with the Gate travelling to Court Place Farm on Saturday 19th October. Full details will follow in due course as we continue our adventure in the Emirates FA Cup.

The fixture list is heavily congested in October and we haven’t even added in the FA Trophy yet, but the players, buoyed from the FA Cup win, the addition of centre back George Essuman and key players returning from injury, are ready for the challenge of Nikki Bull’s Leatherhead side who recorded a much needed 3-0 victory over Cheshunt on Saturday, lifting them out of the relegation zone.

Following that we head to White Heart Lane to play the lesser known but in better form local club Haringey Borough, they also recorded a victory (1-0 v Cray) on Saturday and will prove another stern test for Jay and his young charges. As always Terry Scott will be organising the supporter’s minibus and we do hope you can come along and support the team.

Our Ladies team have also had an impressive week with back to back victories over local rivals Ramsgate. Firstly, on Tuesday 1st October Evan Paris’s girls dispatched our neighbours in red 6-0 in the Reposs Isthmian Women’s Cup, with new ‘Gate striker Kara Richardson scoring a hat trick against her former club. Then on Sunday afternoon, with the rain still coming down the Ladies almost managed a repeat performance winning 5-0 in their SECWFL match. This time the goals were scored by Nicole Adams, Harriet Woolston, Lucy Paris, Sandra Nightingale and Grace Phillips-James. Both games were very well attended, and we would like to thank everyone who came out to support Evan and his team.

We would like to thank Tomas Berlin who kindly donated a selection of musical instruments to the Club that our supporters were able to put to great use creating a fantastic atmosphere in Salisbury often drowning out the 700 plus home fans and roaring the lads on to victory! Thank you Tomas, your kind donation is very much appreciated and we look forward to putting them to good use tonight.

To everyone attending tonight we hope you have a great evening under the lights at HDP, let’s get behind Jay and the boys, and to those visiting from Leatherhead we wish you a pleasant evening and a safe journey home after the full-time whistle.

From the Manager

Hello everyone, for those that travelled to Salisbury on Saturday I hope you enjoyed the game and thank you for your support from the stands – the players noticed, and it adds extra incentive for them to perform!

Although we conceded a sloppy late goal overall I was pleased with the performance, Michael and Chris got valuable minutes as they return to action after injury, big George (Essuman) slotted into defence very well and it was great to watch the attacking play from Elliott, Kad’s and Noel; his goals were the result of his hard work for the team and learning to play as a number 10.

The FA Cup is a special competition and it is great for the Club to be in the 4th Rd Qualifying taking on Oxford City away in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup. It will be another tough game, but we will prepare well and the players know that if they play to their strengths then we can beat anyone on our day.

Tonight, we welcome Leatherhead to HDP, I know Nikki will set up his team to be hard to beat and we can expect another tough game but if the lads perform as I know they can then we have every chance of getting a positive result.

Regarding the team, Swifty and Jordy have returned to training and we will look to introduce them back into the squad in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, Julien got a knock at Salisbury and had to be replaced by Jack Richards, he is still to be assessed by his parent club Welling, but we think he will be out for a few weeks .

Finally, I would like to wish Kadell well this week as he has been called up by Guyana, he will be missed but with Jack and Adem we have the depth to cover his absence and we look forward to his return,

I hope you all enjoy the game this evening, thanks again for all your support,

Cheers,

Jay

4 From the Chairman

Good evening everyone!

Isn’t it nice to be back at Hartsdown Park after the performance on Saturday? I was down in Salisbury with a close friend of mine and he thought it one of the best games he’s seen in terms of fighting spirit and team performance, we both thought the team played excellently so congratulations to Jay and the boys.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Nikki, the directors, his players, staff and supporters, I hope you had a good jour- ney down and enjoy your short stay with us this evening.

We have seen already this season that there are no easy games and this is sure to be another close encounter as both teams want the points to move up the table in the .

A special mention must go out to you the supporters, your voice, passion and support for the players against Concord was a sight to behold and the noise you made at Salisbury was equally as impressive, let’s all get behind Jay and the players tonight and make Hartsdown Park a fortress against all our opponents.

I hope you all enjoy the game tonight,

Terry Painter

5 SUPPORTERS CLUB

Good evening and welcome back at Hartsdown Park where we play host Leatherhead in the league after the game was postponed to make way for our FA Cup win at home to Concord Rangers. As these notes were written before the Salisbury trip I can only hope we are looking forward to a 4th Qualifying Round fixture on 19th October.

So what do you see your football club’s main job is?

The most straightforward answer is, to score more goals than the opposition, win the league and the cup and get as high up the football pyramid as possible. However there is a more important role football clubs should undertake and not just the Manchester United’s, Liverpool’s and Fulham’s of this world. The role in the community can be and probably should be a major part of the football clubs daily life (Hard to believe I know but everything does not ground to a halt at Hartsdown Park outside of match days) Apart from the first team we have a thriving Ladies team, Walking Football team, Academy and Youth set up in Margate and links with local charities who use our facilities or benefit from our Community Programme.

Here is where you the supporters can then step forward with suggestions to and about the local groups that can benefit from links with the football club, encourage others who would gain much by attending games and/or joining one of the groups associated with Margate Football. Do you know a talented youngster, a female footballer or someone who play football albeit at a stroll? Is there a person or a group that would gain from using our facilities. Don’t have a blinked view of your football club, it does have a lot of offer.

Help to make Margate Football Club become a major hub in the community.

The latest winners in our Supporters Members draw for the free away travel is Barry Allport. The winner will be notified shortly to make arrangements for the prize. Remember these draws are only one benefit of being in the Supporters Club.

The Supporters Club are due to meet with the clubs General Manager again next week so if there is an issue you would liked raised at Tuesday’s meeting please see our Chairman Malcolm Sherry, Terry Scott, Alan Swinnock or Frankie Empson as soon as possible. Coach travel and the website are already on the agenda.

Please look out for more details on the club website, our Facebook page, and the notice board down by our hut at the turnstiles.

Please get behind the team with your support at games, taking part in the Weekly Winners Draw, joining the Supporters Club and generally spreading the word about Margate Football Club

Membership of the Supporters Club for the 2019/20 is open to everyone at the existing prices of £7 for adults, £5 for concessions and the £1 special child membership so ask at our hut for details of this and anything else supporter based, as well as your 50/50 tickets.

6 Forty, Twenty, Ten—A look back in the MFC Archives 9 October 1979 As usual we hit the month of poor results, this time in September. Looking back at the results of Margate FC we always have a 4 week period of time when games just don’t go our way. Sometimes it’s September others October, and there is often a cup competition in there too. We started the run with a 1 – 2 defeat away to Hastings in the Southern League Cup 2nd Round. Vic Pain hit our consola- tion goal in front of 216 fans. Four days later we undertook the long haul down to Poole (pre M25, M3 and M27) returning empty handed losing 0 – 1. The following Tuesday Crawley got their revenge on us for beating them in the League Cup winning 0 – 2, but we may have been saving ourselves for the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round home fixture against Dulwich where Lennie Lee scored the only goal of the game watched by 373 fans. We ended the month with an away point following a goalless draw with Dartford seen by 701 fans. Played 9 Won 3 Drew 2 Lost 4 Goals For 7 Goals Against 10 Points 10

9th October 1999 Not as hectic as 1979 this time with only three games starting with a trip to the Midlands and Halesowen away winning 3 – 0 with goals from Phil Collins, Eliot Martin and a first for John Utterson watched by 449. The following two weekends we were in cup action starting with another long trip to the West Country and Taunton Town for the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Goals from Dixon, Munday and Porter saw us through to the next round, the following week it was the FA Trophy 1st Qualifying round again away but closer to home in . A goalless draw meant at least that our next game would be at home and hopefully watched by more than 150 as in Surrey. Played 9 Won 6 Drew 2 Lost 1 Goals For 16 Goals Against 6 Points 20

10th October 2009 No cups to worry about this year and a mixed bag of results starting with a home draw with Hornchurch with a gate of 355. The following week success at home to Kingstonian winning 2 – 1 the winner coming from Lloyd Blackman after we had gone ahead in the 8th minute when Akwasi Edusei swept in a Wayne Wilson corner for his only league goal for Margate in his five appearances. Today we were away to Canvey Island but lost 0 – 2. Played 12 Won 4 Drew 2 Lost 6 Goals For 12 Goals Against 22

7 Today's Opponents:Today’s Leatherhead Opponents FC

The modern Leatherhead Football Club was formed by the merger of Leatherhead Rose and Leatherhead United in 1946. However, research undertaken by supporters David Johnston and Graham Mitchell showed that the Tanners can trace their continuous history back to the formation of Leatherhead Rose in 1907. The Surrey FA confirmed that the 2007-8 season was Leatherhead’s official Centenary.

The town’s first, of many, clubs was formed in 1886 and twenty one years later, Leatherhead Rose were established as a team drawn from the Leatherhead Common area. Rose played friendlies until the formation of the and District League in 1909 and they were crowned as the first League Champions. The league shut down for the duration of the Great War in which four Rose players and one committee man were killed. One Leatherhead family closely associated with Leatherhead Rose, the Taylors, sent seven brothers to the War. Five were killed and a sixth lost a log. Only “Lucky” Arthur remained physically unscathed and was able to resume his playing career in 1919-20 when Rose were League Champions again. In 1920, Leatherhead Rose joined the Kingston and District League and won the League title three times, the last in 1938-9. Leatherhead United were formed in 1924 and, in 1925-6, won Division FORM GUIDE One of the Sutton and District League. In the early 1930s, Fetcham Grove based United joined the Surrey Junior League. After becoming Champions LOST in 1933-4, they joined the Surrey Intermediate League but were relegated in 1937 after a disastrous season. v Lewes

Upon the outbreak of World War II, many leagues were suspended travel 4—1 restrictions but the Kingston League continued. Rose’s Barnett Wood Lane ground was needed for allotments so they returned to Kingston Road. United continued to play friendlies and in 1940-1, United beat Rose 3-2, DRAW the last ever meeting of the two sides. v Worthing After the War, officials of the two clubs met and on 27th May 1946, 5—5 Leatherhead Football Club was officially formed at a public meeting. The two clubs pooled their financial resources (a total of £200) and three former Rose officials and two from United were elected as officers. WON United’s Fetcham Grove ground was to be used as the home ground. The Tanners were accepted as late entrants to the Surrey Senior League and v Bowers & Pitsea went on to win four consecutive Championships before joining the 1—0 Metropolitan League. After just one season, they switched to the new all- amateur Delphian League, joining the Corinthian League in 1958. Tanners were the League’s last champions as, in 1963, the Corinthian and LOST Delphian Leagues joined forces with the Athenian League. Leatherhead won promotion from Division One at the end of the first season and v Bognor Regis inaugurated their floodlights with a match against a Fulham side including: 5—1 George Cohen, Alan Mullery, Bobby Robson and Johnny Haynes. Leatherhead won the Surrey Senior Cup in 1969 and also collected the Intermediate Cup and Senior Shield, a unique achievement. The disappointment of defeat in FA Amateur Cup semi-finals in 1971 and 1974 was tempered by election to the Isthmian League.

Leatherhead made national headlines in 1974-5 when they reached the KIT Fourth Round proper of the FA Cup. After playing through all the qualifying rounds, they had to overcome Bishops Stortford before meeting and beating Football League opposition for the first time. Colchester United went down 1-0 at Fetcham Grove before “Leatherhead Lip” Chris Kelly’s goal defeated and Albion at the Goldstone Ground. The Fourth Round tie against First Division Leicester City was switched to Filbert Street where Leatherhead were two goals ahead at half time, eventually losing 2-3 when the fitness of the full time players took its toll. In subsequent seasons, the Tanners defeated two more Football League sides at the Grove – Cambridge United and Northampton Town.

In 1978, the Tanners reached at last but were beaten in www.leatherheadfc.com

8 the FA Trophy Final. Tragically, Chairman Chris Luff, “Mr Leatherhead”, died suddenly in February 1978. His ambition had been to see Leatherhead at Wembley. Without his leadership, the Club entered a period of decline and were relegated in 1983. In 1985, the Tanners were denied promotion by a three point deduction but this period was typified by a succession of managers and turnover of players. In 1990, Leatherhead slipped down into Division Two South but they were back in Division One in 1997. The Club’s finances were still a problem and, in 1999, only emergency funding kept the Tanners going. In the summer of 2000, Leatherhead FC was within a few days of folding. The Club was saved by its supporters who took over following a crisis meeting at the end of May. Only one player remained at Fetcham Grove so a new team had to be built from scratch and although Chick Botley won Manager of the Month for March, it was too late to avoid relegation.

In 2006-7, Leatherhead were the lowest ranked team to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing 1-2 at Football League side, Torquay United. Unfortunately, league form for the rest of the season and the early part of the 2007-8 campaign was poor culminating in October 2007 in the resignation of manager David Harlow and the majority of the squad took that as their cue to leave as well. Ian Hazel was quickly appointed and immediately faced the tough task of rebuilding the First Team during the season, with The Tanners eventually finishing 14th. However, the Youth Team completed an Isthmian Youth League and Cup double. Ian Hazel’s reign lasted barely a year, resigning in October 2008; however, replacement Bob Langford’s spell was even shorter, leaving at the end of the season as Tanners struggled into 15th position. The previous year’s successful Youth Team squad had stepped to form a reserve team and duly added to their previous successes by winning the Suburban League South Championship by a margin of 18 points.

Mick Sullivan, who had had great success in an eight-year stint at local rivals Merstham, was appointed First Team Manager in May 2009 and immediately set about rebuilding the team. Under Sullivan’s guidance, the club had its most successful season in years, winning the Isthmian League Cup (the first major trophy for some 40 years) and finishing the season in fifth place in the League before losing a play-off semi-final. At the start of the 2010-11 season, Tanners beat Ryman Premier League Champions, Dartford, to win the Isthmian Charity shield. This was followed by a dramatic play-off victory against Dulwich Hamlet (4-3 after extra time) in Division One South, which saw The Tanners return to the Premier Division for the first time since 1983.

Following a bad start to the 2011-12 season, Richard Brady was appointed manager in September. He was unable to guide Tanners to safety; however, the club did have a successful FA Cup run, which came to an end in the fourth qualifying round replay versus Sutton United. 2013-14 saw Tanners end the regular season in third spot. With home advantage in the playoff semi-final, The Tanners edged Guernsey 3-2. After 120 minutes, and with the scores level at 1-1 with Folkstone Invicta, Leatherhead won the penalty shootout 5-3 and celebrated their return to Ryman Premier Division. In their first season back in the Premier Division Tanners finish the season in a respectable tenth place. Following an indifferent start to 2015-16, Richard Brady stepped down as Manager. Former coach, Mike Sandmann and Steve Watt took over the reins and, with several additions, finished the season in a creditable 11th place.

The 2016-17 season saw a massive overhaul both on and off the pitch with former manager Richard Brady elected as Chairman. Under new leadership and with budget cuts implemented the side started poorly and Mike Sandmann was replaced. The surprise choice as his successor was former Fulham and Hull player . His appointment certainly attracted a lot of media attention to the club. Jimmy’s reputation enabled a decent squad to be assembled but results didn’t immediately improve and relegation looked a probability by February. However, a fine run in saw Tanners confirmed as safe in the penultimate week of the season. Bullard left in the summer and was replaced by former AFC Wimbledon and Leyton Orient player Sammy Moore. In his first managerial job Sammy did a fantastic job as Tanners reached the second round proper of the FA Cup, missed out on the play offs only on goal difference and reached the County Cup final. Not surprisingly Sammy moved up the non league ladder to takeover at Concord Rangers in May 2018, taking a number of his former players with him. Former Wycombe, Aldershot and Margate goalkeeper Nikki Bull was appointed to replace him and led the side to an 8th place finish last season.

BY DAVID RICHARDSON

All too often in the aftermath of alleged incidents of racism, we see clubs and leagues put out an obligatory statement and then try to move on from the matter as swiftly as possible.

But, following the latest blight on the game, Hartlepool United deserve credit for the way they responded to the unsavoury scenes we saw during their National League game with Dover Athletic when striker Inih Effiong was subject to racist abuse and gestures from spectators in the Pools end.

His team-mate Ricky Modeste was also caught up in the incident, while Pools midfielder Gus Mafuta was clearly upset by what he heard as he told the supporter to get out of the ground.

An arrest has been made by Cleveland Police and we hope a heavy sanction is handed out should the person be found guilty. They have no place in our football grounds and we all have a responsibility to unite and drive them away.

Both Dover and the National League made their feelings clear in statements released after the game. Dover also pointed out that blame should not be shifted on to the victim. Effiong celebrated his goal in front of the fans – but that doesn’t give irate people a pass to racial abuse.

Pools reacted well too. With their own players unhappy with what played out, chairman Raj Singh visited their homes on Sunday to talk through what happened.

Then, their game against Chesterfield last Tuesday night was used to send out a message. The front of their programme and banners carried logos with ‘Love Pools Hate Racism’. The club also carried an interview with Mafuta, where he was able to put across how he felt that afternoon when he saw supporters of the club he represents abusing a fellow footballer for the colour of his skin.

It would have been easy to shy away from it but Pools rightly gave him a platform.

Effiong told The NLP: “You hear it and see it out of their mouths. Understand, the fans looked so angry. I’m thinking, ‘How can I make you that angry that you want to give me racial abuse?’ It wasn’t on and quite upsetting. Even their players were devastated by it.

“We considered walking off. Our gaffer asked if we wanted to, their gaffer said they would support us if we wanted to. But we just said, ‘No, let’s get on with the game’.”

Both Effiong and Mafuta feel it is vital to keep up the conversation. It is important their voices are heard.

Action needs to be firm and strong to eradicate this scar on society and football.

Non-League Day has been one of the great success stories of Non-League football since its inception by James Doe.

A simple idea, but a really good one that encourages fans to get down to their local club during an international break each season.

It’s a day that puts Non-League football up in lights for those who may not normally consider it. It shows people there are good games often only ten minutes away or so from their front doors.

Clubs have run promotion offers for entry, organised special events at the ground, leagues have arranged groundhops and one club even had ferret racing one year!

It’s a great opportunity to take along a debutant - we’re sure they will love it too. 10 Player Interview: Noel Leighton

It has been a good week for The Gate. A comeback victory on Tuesday evening at East Thurrock United was followed by a comprehensive win against Salisbury FC in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday. One player who has enjoyed the past seven days is Margate centre-forward, Noel Leighton. On the score sheet for both games, Leighton has begun to bag the goals displays have merited. Speaking after Saturday’s 4-2 win in Wiltshire, Leighton expressed his delight to be a part of an outstanding team display. “I’m really pleased with the win, the goals and to be through to the next round. I thought all the boys played superbly today. We really brought the game to Salisbury and in front of a decent crowd I felt we showed what quality we have in the squad.” “I’m personally delighted to get the two goals, it is always good to score and be part of a win, you can’t ask for much more as a striker but there is always something a little bit special about the cup and all the boys are buzzing we have gotten through.” Leighton added, “When the draw was made, we knew we were in for a tough game. It’s a long journey to make, the draw definitely could have been kinder, but we took that in our stride - and it is certainly going to be a good-journey back home!” Goals breed confidence in any striker, and for Leighton, with a busy October coming up his focus is clear. “I’ve had a good return this week and I want to score more and chalk some more goals up, any striker would but it’s an important few weeks for the club and as a team. We want to build up form, carry the momentum forward and climb up the table.” That starts with this evening’s game and the visit of Leatherhead FC to Hartsdown Park before a journey to Haringey Borough and upcoming scheduled games versus Merstham and Phoenix Sports. “It’s a busy month which is part and parcel of the season. As a team you want to stay in as many competitions for as long as possible which means you inevitably have the fixture congestion, a lot of Saturday/Tuesday weeks. It’s a challenge but it is one we know we can deal with as we’ve shown this week.” “Leatherhead will be another tough game – they all are at this level, but we are keen to make our home form a bit more concrete. We had a great day out on Saturday, we cele- brated and deserved to but now focus is on getting three points and making sure the supporters go home happy like they did at the weekend.”

Margate Ladies hosted Ramsgate Women's team in this hotly anticipated Isthmian Women's Cup fixture at Hartsdown Park on Tuesday evening.

The game kicked off with Margate on the front foot and the visitors setting up sitting deep with plenty of players behind the ball looking to hit the Gate on a counter attack.

It took until the 22nd minute for Kara Richardson to break the deadlock against her former Club and doubled the lead just before the break with a fine finish.

The second half started with the blues confidently knocking the ball about and retaining good possession but it was from a set piece straight from the training ground that saw Lucy Paris score from 20 yards from a well worked short corner.

Kara Richardson bagged her hat-trick on 62 minutes as she outpaced the Rams defence to make it 4-0. Strike partner Harriet Woolston worked tirelessly upfront, although she didn't get on the score sheet she could take credit for a couple of assists.

The back three of Becks Slevin, Lily Kemp and Kerry Grant along with keeper Lauren Watson were solid as a unit and never looked like conceding over the 90 mins.

Winger Shannon King tapped home the 5th after a goal mouth scramble and Jessica Laker scored her first goal for the team after coming on in the final 10 minutes with a sweet strike from the angle of the area to give Margate a well earned 6-0 victory and see them progress in the competition.

The team would like to thank every man, woman and child who came to support both teams in terrible conditions along with best wishes and a speedy recovery to two Rams players who picked up injuries during the game.
