With a personal interest in history and Scotland’s links to slavery, Laura is desperate to find out where her ancestors came from and what kind of lives they led. She has some basic information from her father, Ian, who went to Jamaica to find out more, but Laura has a personal desire to discover more about her identity. With help from genealogist Elizabeth Cunningham and expert Sir Geoff Palmer; Laura explores the realities of slavery and the effects on her family story. She discovers that had it not been for the bravery and strength of her ancestors, life today might have been very different for her. Neil is a keen landscape photographer and scout leader living in the north east of Scotland. There has been a long standing family rumour that they are related to Burke and Hare, the notorious Edinburgh murderers and Neil wants to find out the truth. With the help of genealogist Lorna Kinnaird, Neil journeys through the winding closes and underground world of the old town in the hope of finding out the truth about the skeletons in his family’s closet. With rumours explored and war heroes remembered, Neil discovers long-forgotten ancestors who shaped the life of his family. HM River City Monday 27 May, BBC Scotland HD, 10.00-11.00pm Tuesday 28 May, BBC One Scotland HD, 8.00 – 9.00pm facebook.com/bbcrivercity twitter.com/bbcrivercity instagram.com/bbcrivercity This week in Shieldinch…Poppy uncovers new evidence which could overturn Alex’s murder conviction but he’s reluctant to fight for release; Maggie’s anxious about her nursing hearing; and new arrival Eve Christie clashes with Scarlett. Fearing her career has hit the buffers following the Murdoch murder case, Poppy is thrilled when she unwittingly discovers new evidence. Whilst helping her dad Dougie in the charity shop, Poppy comes across a security camera which features footage recorded on the night of Lydia’s murder. Realising it could be the key to Alex’s freedom, Poppy visits him in prison to share her discovery but is horrified by his reaction – he doesn’t want to be freed and she should destroy the evidence. When Poppy refuses to let go, Alex is forced to reveal the reason he’s serving time for a murder he didn’t commit. Elsewhere, Maggie’s nursing hearing looms large and she’s having second thoughts about going through with it. At the health centre, Kim and Suzie create a mock hearing to put Maggie through her paces. When faced with some uncomfortable questions about her alcoholism, Maggie begins to question whether she’s emotionally ready to return to nursing after all. New arrival Eve Christie rolls into town and immediately clashes with nosey neighbour Scarlett. The pair butt heads but Scarlett soon realises Eve is a formidable force to be reckoned with. Poppy is played by Lindsey Campbell, Alex by Jordan Young, Maggie by Kathryn Howden, Eve Christie by Victoria Liddelle, Scarlett by Sally Howitt, Dougie by Stewart Porter, Kim by Frances Thorburn and Suzie by Juliet Cadzow. River City is a BBC Studios, Scotland production for BBC One Scotland. She also makes some bunting from shells she found on the beach and a bath mat from towels that have seen better days. IS TUESDAY 28 MAY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 22 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ #BumpBirthBaby, Ep 2/3 Tuesday May 21 BBC Scotland, 10.00-11.00pm In this second episode, we meet four mums trying to juggle family with work while struggling to find a little ‘me-time’. Budding mummy vlogger Ash, 24, could easily put her feet up at the start of her maternity leave, but she has other ideas. Between looking after 17-month-old Ella, creating videos for her vlog and an ongoing house-cleaning frenzy, there’s little time for rest as she prepares to welcome her second bundle of joy. Fellow second-time mum-to-be Sarah is even busier, juggling a demanding career running her own baby disco events business with looking after three-year-old daughter Violet. She’s looking at the prospect of getting back to the daily grind just eight weeks after her new baby arrives. On the Isle of Skye, Deirdre and Gary, mum and dad to nine-year-old Oscar, are looking forward to the arrival of their second baby too, but rural parenthood presents its challenges, not least a five-hour round trip to the nearest hospital in Inverness for pre-natal scans. Dad Gary wants to make sure he’s prepared for all eventualities. He says: “I half worry I’ll be delivering the baby in the snow by the side of the road somewhere, so maybe I should read up.” #BumpBirthBaby is a Firecracker production for BBC Scotland and is repeated at 10.35pm on BBC One Scotland on Monday. LD International Friendly – Scotland v Jamaica NEW Tuesday, 28 May BBC ALBA, 7.25pm-9.35pm Live football coverage as Scotland Women take on Jamaica in an international challenge match. This is the last game Shelley Kerr's squad play before they head of to France for the FIFA Women's World Cup. IS WEDNESDAY 29 MAY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 22 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scotland’s Home Of The Year, Ep 8/8 LAST IN THE SERIES Wednesday 29 May BBC Scotland, 8.00-9.00pm It’s crunch time for the judges as they come together in an hour-long special to consider all seven finalists and reveal Scotland’s Home of the Year. The seven home owners from across the country who’ve made it through the heats gather at the stunning House for an Art Lover in Glasgow – it’s their first chance to meet each other and see who they’re up against in the competition. From stunning self-builds to breath-taking renovations and innovative urban properties, there’s a vast range of different property styles for judges Michael Angus, Anna Campbell-Jones and Kate Spiers to consider. The first stage of the judging sees seven whittled down to a top three and then things really get tricky for the judges because only one house can emerge as overall winner. Architect Michael Angus says: “It’s a phenomenal selection of houses. It’s been delightful to discover the variety of creativity that’s happening in Scottish architecture and in these homes.” Scotland’s Home of the Year is an IWC Media production for BBC Scotland. LD THURSDAY 30 MAY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 22 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Scooby and the Rave Years NEW, Ep 1/1 Thursday 30 May BBC Scotland, 11.00-11.30pm Stuart ‘Scooby’ Cochrane raved riotously through the thriving dance music scene in Scotland, becoming a DJ and then latterly a pioneer of the emerging rave scene in the 1990s. He scaled greatness throughout the decade, then fell short of the summit, living a life of decadence which took its own toll. This new film about his life in those years takes in his early memories of barn dances in Stirling through to raves at Prestwick Airport and “Love at the Plaza”. His odyssey traverses Scottish dance music through to clubbing and fashion via Ibiza, where he was instrumental in the rise of Cafe Mambo. Scoobs is joined by Slam, TTF, QFX, Ultrasonic, and the DJs Clive, Michael Kilkie, Colin Tevendale, Frazer, Alfredo and Harri. HM FRIDAY 31 MAY TELEVISION & RADIO HIGHLIGHTS / BBC WEEK 22 _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Shelley’s Heroes: World Cup Dreams NEW, Ep 1/1 Friday, 31 May BBC Scotland, 7.00 – 8.00 pm BBC Scotland’s World Cup documentary will tell you everything you need to know about the Scotland team and their chances ahead of the World Cup. The film pieces together the players’ humble beginnings and how they came to be part of the footballing elite. Featuring Kim Little, Erin Cuthbert and Shelley Kerr, the documentary gets to the heart of who the team are and what makes the squad tick. In their own words, the team tells the story of their journey through the highs and lows of qualification - reliving the games, goals, saves, inspirations and the moment when they made history. The programme celebrates the women’s game, paralleling the Scotland’s squad journey to qualification with the changing landscape of women’s football. Narrated by Karen Bartke, the programme looks at what the women’s game once was, where it is now and what it could be for all the girls with a dream of playing football who will be watching the World Cup.

No. 181 No.181 • November/December • 2018 No.181 ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE Grassroots football celebrated throughout Europe EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary INNOVATION THROUGH CONSULTATION he first few months of the 2018/19 season have brought excitement and innovation for UEFA and European football: a new competition, new technology, and new T tournament hosts. The UEFA Nations League has got off to a thrilling start; the Executive Committee has decided to introduce video assistant referees (VAR) in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League; and Germany has been selected to host the UEFA EURO 2024. UEFA is not in the business of making changes without good reason or by diktat. All these initiatives are the result of dialogue and consultation, and all have the same end goal: the continued success and further development of European football. UEFA, its member associations, and key stakeholders in the European Club Association and the European Leagues are working together for the good of the game. Football is a team game and UEFA is a team player. Consultation underpinned the creation of the UEFA Nations League, which kicked off in September. Turkey’s ecstatic celebrations after Emre Akbaba’s late double saw them come back from 2-0 down to win against Sweden; Kosovo’s joy at their first competitive match win, against the Faroe Islands; and Spain’s victories over England and Croatia after a disappointing World Cup showed how much this competition already means to players. Just as the UEFA Nations League was only introduced after extensive research and debate, UEFA has been careful not to rush the introduction of video assistant referees.
