[email protected] Birmingham City can confirm that their UEFA Women's Champions League quarter final first leg against Arsenal will be held at St. Andrew's on Monday 24 March (7pm kick off). The eagerly-anticipated all-WSL tie will be staged at Birmingham City's famous home following the success of the Round of 16 victory over FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk in November. This is already the furthest Blues have progressed in Europe's elite competition after the 7-2 aggregate win over Russian opposition had followed a 4-0 two-legged success over PK-35 Vantaa of Finland. Admission details for the big match will be confirmed in due course. Meanwhile Birmingham have bolstered their squad further with the acquisition of former hot shot Hannah Keryakoplis and midfielder Remi Allen. 19-year-old Hannah played for Liverpool for three consecutive FA Women's Super League seasons and finished as the Reds' top scorer in 2012. After finding playing opportunities limited, she moved to Stoke City, of the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division, in August 2013. Having represented Wales at Under-17 and Under-19 level, the Penyffordd-born striker made her senior debut aged just 17 in 2011 and currently has 20 caps and three goals to her name. Keryakoplis is also the current Young Player of the Year for Wales and led their forward line during the recent UEFA Under-19 Championship Finals in her home country. Remi has represented England from Under-15 level through to Under-23s with the highlight of that international experience being the Three Lions' lifting the 2009 UEFA Under-19 Championship; a team that also included new Blues team mates Rebecca Spencer, , , Chelsea Weston and Kerys Harrop. Blues Ladies boss David Parker said of his new captures: "Hannah is a player I have admired for some time now. When watching her play for Liverpool and Wales in the 2012 season she stood out for me as a player to watch in the coming years. "She's a young tenacious player who has all the attributes to be a modern centre forward and is another player who fits in well with our philosophy at the football club. "She will add a different dimension to our strike force next year and it's a great pleasure to see such an enthusiastic player that has chosen to join us for all the right reasons and to progress her footballing development. I'm delighted we have been able to secure a deal for Remi in what is a great coup for the club. "Remi is a combative central midfielder who has been a shining light in Lincoln's side for the past three seasons and will add another dimension to the side next season. "Often overlooked is her technical and goalscoring ability which gets less plaudits because of her aggressive style of play. What is also key when recruiting any player is their character and how they will fit into the group and with Remi it’s a perfect fit for this football club both on and off the pitch." [email protected] Northern Division Jamillah Palmer marked her Stoke City debut by scoring twice as they came from behind to beat Newcastle Utd 4-2 and move up into second place in the Northern Division. Lizzy Fraser lobbed Newcastle in front with Natasha Lilly equalising, but an own by Anne-Marie Atherton put United back in the lead again. Laura Garside levelled matters once again before Palmer, recently signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers, secured victory for Stoke with two second half goals which sees them cut the gap on leaders Sheffield FC to four points. Sporting Club Albion meanwhile leapt into the top half of the table on the back of a 4-1 win away to Leeds Utd. Jamie-Leigh Fowler opened the scoring for Albion after seven minutes but Leeds battled hard to get back on level terms via a powerful strike from Abbie Lee. After the break, Robyn James put Albion in control by netting twice and the prolific striker completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot. These were the only two matches throughout the Premier League to survive the weather over the weekend, all of the others having been postponed. There had been better news for Leeds in the week before Christmas as they picked up an important 3-0 local derby victory over Bradford City, which had taken them out of the bottom two. Carey Huegett scored twice inside the opening half hour, to take her league tally for the season to nine, with an own goal sewing up the points during the second half. Southern Division Only one match has been played in the division during the past three weeks but it produced a hugely significant result at the foot of the table. The two bottom placed teams, Keynsham Town and Chesham Utd, met each other in an important clash and it was Keynsham who leapfrogged the Clarets with a 5-2 win. Gemma Fraser latched onto a bad back pass to give Chesham a second minute lead and after Katarzyna Rusek equalised for the home side, Fraser restored Chesham's advantage but Leanne Lapham levelled the scores once again on the stroke of half time. After the break, Rusek and Lapham each netted their second goals to put the match into Keynsham's hands and they wrapped up the win through substitute Hari Sabic late on.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the re- signing of midfielder Grace Coombs, who returns from a spell at the University of Massachusetts. Grace rejoined the club before the Christmas break and will be available for the second half of the season, starting on 5th January away to West Ham United. The versatile 23-year-old, who can also play at centre back, is looking forward to getting back out on the field and playing with old friends. On her return to Sparrow's Lane, she said: "It was always going to happen, really. I wasn't ever looking anywhere else. My best friends play for this team, so it just made sense [to come back]. "It will be different at first but I am sure I will adjust. I still know the majority of the team so hopefully I know how they play so I can fit in quickly. [email protected] "There are quite a few key players injured at the moment but I just want to come in and do what I can. The last time I was in the team we won the league so I am hoping that will mean something." After coming through Charlton's centre of excellence, Grace had a season with West Ham before making the move back to the Addicks, where she played 74 first team games in all competitions, scoring six goals. Having been part of the Charlton team that won the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division title in 2010-11, she made the move to America. Grace was an ever present in her final two years with the UMass Minutewomen, co-captaining the side for her senior year in 2013. She racked up three goals and seven assists in 58 appearances in her three years, as she combined playing football with studying. On her time stateside, she added: "I learnt a lot, it was hard but I think it was well worth doing and I would recommend it to people in the future, definitely. "I think it improved everything, even me as a person. It taught me a lot and made me know I could do things I didn't think I could do. It's a different way of life over there. "In pre-season for about two weeks we would train twice a day and then it goes down to once a day and then during the year we would have Monday off, train Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, game Friday and train Saturday and Sunday."

[email protected] Manchester City have announced the signing of New Zealand international Betsy Hassett on a one-year contract. The central midfielder joins the club having plied her trade in America and Germany. During her time in the States, she made her senior international debut in a famous 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2008 Peace Queen Cup and she has since made over 50 competitive appearances for the Football Ferns, scoring six goals. Born in Titirangi, Auckland, Hassett began playing football with her older brothers at the age of four. She continued to play through her adolescent years and captained her college team to a third place finish at the National Schools Tournament in her homeland. She then made the move to America to progress her footballing career, attending the University of Berkeley, California. Whilst studying a range of subjects - including public health, environmental science, philosophy and Swahili - Hassett played for university team, the California Bears, between 2009 and 2012. The 23-year-old went on to play a pivotal role in the 2011 Women's World Cup and the 2012 Olympics for New Zealand. In , she was a key part of the squad that became the country's first to reach the second round of a major FIFA tournament. Having made such an impressive impact in her homeland, the midfielder hopes to increase her country's awareness of women's football. In addition to her international exploits, Hassett also spent a year in the Frauen-Bundesliga 2 with SC Sand and is optimistic that her endeavours will serve to help her new team as they bid to tackle England's top women's league for the first time.

Everton are delighted to confirm that sixteen players have penned new contracts with the club. Michelle Hinnigan, Brooke Chaplen, Jody Handley, Kelly Jones and Amy Kane have all committed, and up front has penned fresh terms. The club is also pleased to announce that Centre of Excellence graduates Paige Williams, Lucy Whipp, Danielle Turner and Chaney Boye-Hlorkah - as well as last season's signing Simone Magill - have all signed their first senior contracts. The news is very welcome for boss Spence. "Firstly I'm delighted with the players who have re-signed and shown fantastic commitment to the club," he said. "From a longer term point of view, it's brilliant that we have been able to secure a large number of players on long term deals which will allow our team to grow and develop together. "Pre-season is only a matter of weeks away now and I'm looking forward to seeing all the players back in ahead of what will be an exciting 2014 campaign." [email protected] Chelsea are delighted to announce the signings of England duo and from Arsenal. Centre back Flaherty, 22, was recently included in new England manager Mark Sampson’s first squad, while central midfielder Katie Chapman has represented her country on more than 80 occasions. Both players have signed from Women’s Super League rivals Arsenal having helped the Gunners to multiple league and cup honours during their time at the club. Chelsea manager , who worked with both Chapman and Flaherty during her time as Arsenal assistant manager, said: "Gilly is the best uncapped player in the country. In my opinion she will become a bedrock for club and country as she has all the hallmarks of a top class player. "Katie is best at what she does in this country and I am sure any manager in the country would say the same. Her experience and winning mentality is what sets her apart and she is a fabulous role model too." Chelsea completed the signings of England pair Rachel Williams and from Birmingham City in November, with the duo helping Hayes’ team to the final of the International Women’s Club Championship in Japan in December. The new Women’s Super League season kicks off in April and Chapman can’t wait for the action to get underway. "I am delighted to be here and it is an exciting new chapter in my career," said Chapman, who began her career with Millwall and has also played for . "Chelsea is a massive club with a big club mentality so it is a new challenge for me, which is exciting. The staff and the players are really ambitious here so for me to be part of that is something I am over the moon with." Speaking to Women's Soccer Scene about the move, Gilly Flaherty said: "I'm really excited, it's a new start and a new challenge. "I will be playing full time now as a professional, so that was a big reason for me making the move. It is something you dream of as a little girl and shows how far the women's game has gone in a short space of time - in the past I have been going out to work at eight in the morning and not coming home until nine at night so it is a big difference! "The decision to leave Arsenal wasn't an easy one and I admit that there were times when tears were shed. But my gut feeling was that it was the right decision to make. "The club has made some great signings during the transfer window and it will only make the team stronger. Hopefully Katie and I can help install a winning mentality into the team." Next week, Gilly meets up with the senior England squad for the first time and could be in line for a long overdue first cap. "It's the best start to 2014 that I can imagine," she smiled. "It is going to be a big month for me but as long as I train hard and play as I can play, it can only help me with Chelsea and hopefully England as well." [email protected] Southampton Saints 1 University of Portsmouth 2 University of Portsmouth Community WFC recorded a vital away win in their South West Combination match against Southampton Saints to narrow the gap at the bottom of the table. The fixture survived the deluge by virtue of being played on the 4G pitch at Test Park and Uni gained a deserved three points with a committed and composed performance, despite having only ten players for final twenty minutes after an injury to the scorer of the winning goal, Gemma Green. Pompey looked comfortable right from the start, moving the ball confidently and finding Green and Michelle Niven on the wings to good effect. Hannah Haughton in the home goal denied Niven on 18 minutes with a good save but Uni took the lead a minute later when Niven, played in on the left by another Becky Deacon battles with Georgina Axton through pass, lobbed the keeper and the ball just beat Beth (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). Whitehorn's attempt to clear. Saints responded well and dominated the next twenty minutes. Rosie Dimery saved well from Saints skipper Krystal Whyte then Roxy Lee Stewart made a dangerous run, ending with Whyte netting but from an offside position. A lofted Leah Shave free kick beat Dimery but was well cleared off the line as Saints went very close to the equaliser. Niven nearly doubled the lead just before half time. Once again through on goal on the left, her lobbed shot grazed the angle of post and bar so the visitors took just a single goal advantage to the break. Whyte was inches away from equalising straight from the restart as a defensive slip allowed her to shoot inches wide from 20 yards. Whitehorn had a long range effort turned away for a corner with difficulty by Dimery but Saints were level on 59 minutes when a free kick was headed against the bar by Kat Littleboy and Lucy Harper reacted quickest to nod home the rebound. Parity lasted all of 30 seconds as Uni regained the lead almost from the restart. Green, picking up the ball 35 yards out, went past a defender before drilling a low shot into the bottom right corner for a fine solo effort. The scorer had to come off injured when in collision with keeper Haughton in going for a loose ball right in front of goal and Uni, with no substitutes available, were forced to see out the match a player short. As conditions worsened with a gale force wind and rain sweeping across the pitch, the visitors showed great composure in resisting Saints' increasingly desperate attempts to salvage a point. Substitute Georgina Axton made some telling runs down the left but no Saints head or foot met the crosses. In truth, despite the pressure, Southampton never really created a clear cut opportunity and the work of Niven and Lacey Plumbley in holding up the ball from clearances allowed their team to regain shape. After lengthy additional time, Uni were able to celebrate a sweet victory over a hard working young Saints team. Another crucial match is scheduled for next week, when Saints host Newquay with both teams locked on nine points whilst Uni, four points behind but with games in hand on the Cornish team, will surely take great heart from a brave and skilful showing by all eleven players on the day. Southampton Saints: Hannah Haughton, Beth Whitehorn, Megan Richmond, Liberty Pritchard, Kat Littleboy, Lucy Harper, Bex Davis, Roxy-Lee Stewart, Krystal Whyte, Amber Siley, Leah Shave. Subs: Sheriden Palk, Allana Falconer, Eilidh Currie, Catherine Browning, Georgina Axton. University of Portsmouth: Rosie Dimery, Rebecca Deacon, Bex Ingram, Lauren Paul, Louisa Cambridge, Michelle Niven, Gemma Green, Sarah Stubbs, Naomi Green, Laura Newsome, Lacey Plumbley.

The Under-23s will also be in southern Spain next week for some warm weather training. Both squads will meet up on Sunday 12th January.

[email protected] Scotland finished fourth in their first Brazil Women's International Tournament, after a narrow defeat to world number seven side, Canada, on the final day of action. 's side were looking to avenge a 2-0 defeat on match day one, but a late Sophie Schmidt header sealed victory for Canada in the third/fourth place play-off. Hosts Brazil lifted the trophy after defeating Chile 5-0 in the final. Neither Scotland or Canada had any clear-cut chances in an evenly matched first half. Marie-Eve Nault raced towards the Scotland goal after seven minutes, but fired well over the bar. Canada captain , who picked up her 200th cap in the previous match between the two sides, then sent running with a great ball from midfield, but Gemma Fay easily held her shot. , who was back in the centre of midfield after partnering up front in the previous tournament matches, picked out with a free kick from the right wing, but Canada goalkeeper Erin McLeod got a hand to the ball before the defender could connect. In the final minute of the half, a mix-up between McLeod and led to a Scotland corner, but Little's inswinging effort was knocked over the bar. Both sides looked more dangerous in front of goal in the second half. Jane Ross had an opportunity to grab a spectacular opener, but her powerful curling effort from distance rattled the bar with McLeod beaten. Fay then pulled off a great save to deny . The striker got on the end of a Schmidt flick on to unleash a powerful shot, but the Scotland captain dived to her right to get a hand to the ball. Little sent a low shot just wide before Canada took the lead. Sinclair flicked the ball in to Schmidt but Fay and combined to force the ball out for corner. Diana Matheson whipped the ball in, and Schmidt was there to head in at the near post. (Report by www.scottishfa.co.uk)

TNS Ladies are preparing for one of the biggest matches in their history this week when they play host to Stoke City in the F.A.Women's Cup Second Round. TNS are currently involved in a title challenge in the West Midlands League Premier Division but will have their sights set on claiming a Premier League scalp as they face the team lying in second place in the Northern Division. "The team are very excited about the cup tie," said manager Ollie Eden. "They have played Stoke in previous years and are keen to gauge how close they are to challenging the bigger clubs like Stoke." TNS captain Amy Tomei added: "Everyone at the club is working hard to try and progress not only in the league but in cup competitions as well. "The group of girls this season have really hit it off and want to achieve something big. Many of us have played together for a number of years so it is even more rich when you face this sort of challenge with your friends too. We want to make everyone really proud." [email protected] England captain has re-signed for Arsenal Ladies. The 31-year-old defender, who began her career with the Gunners in 1999, has since enjoyed successful spells with Charlton Athletic, Chelsea and Lincoln Ladies. An experienced England international, with 116 caps to her name, Stoney was appointed the Three Lions' captain in May 2012. She was also given the armband for Team GB at London 2012, leading the side to victory over Brazil in front of 70,000 supporters at Wembley. With the recent signing of England keeper , Stoney's arrival will further strengthen an Arsenal defence that conceded just 11 goals in the Super League last term - the lowest in the division. Arsenal Ladies General Manager Vic Akers told www.arsenal.com: "We're delighted to be welcoming Casey back to the Club. She's one of the finest defenders in the women's game at the moment and she'll bring fantastic experience to our team. We already have an excellent defensive unit here, and adding the England captain will only serve to strengthen that further." Stoney added: "It's a great feeling to be coming back to Arsenal Ladies. They're a team with a fantastic tradition, and it's where I started out so it's a special move for me. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to preparations for the 2014 campaign."

Bristol Academy WFC are delighted to announce that Natasha Harding has committed to the club for the 2014 FA WSL season. The Welsh international played a major part in Bristol Academy's success on and off the pitch in 2013, netting seven goals and starting every WSL match. The winger, who is a favourite with the Vixens Supporters Club (Supporters Club player of the season 2013), said: "I have had a great two years at Bristol and after the hard work we all put in last season, I wanted to justify it with the season and the Champions League. "This season is really looking up to be very exciting already and I can't wait to play in front of our amazing supporters again." Natasha will also take on a new role at the club as the face of the Vixens Community programme. Natasha will be available for club and school visits and will be coaching at fun camps this February. Club president Kevin Hamblin said: "Tash is proving to be a key member of the squad and has improved significantly as a player and a coach during her time at the club. We are delighted she has committed herself to us for next season and that she will lead our growing community programme."

Southampton 1 Univ of Portsmouth 2. [email protected] Cardiff Met Ladies strengthened their position as Shared Access Welsh Premier Women's League leaders on Sunday with a 7-0 victory against reigning Champions Cardiff City FC. Cardiff Met captain Hannah Billingham spoke to Women's Soccer Scene about the game and her side's efforts to go one better than last season when they just missed out on the title on goal difference: This was a fantastic result for Cardiff Met Ladies, is that the best the team has played this season? To be honest, we've played better - it wasn't our best performance coming back after the Christmas break but we did do well. We're proud of the result and the way we played. The game was played in terrible conditions with a strong wind and driving rain at times, it must have been tough? Yes, obviously it did make a difference and made it more difficult but I think that despite the conditions, we did well. The first goal came on the stroke of half time, it couldn't really have been better timed? I'm glad we got the goal right on half time as it gave us confidence when we went in - we came back out and were stronger than ever. When the penalty and sending off came it was important that you scored to make it 2-0, as that probably dispirited City? I think it did, but to be fair to them (City), they did play right up until the end. We knew we had to stay strong coming out in the second half and that's what we did. Laura May Walkley scored a hat-trick and her finishing was terrific, she had a commanding match in midfield? Yes she did and Ellie Curson as well they both played really well Looking at the broader picture now, this was an important win as regards to the title race, is the team's confidence growing week by week with every game that you win? Our confidence has always been strong in training and in the games we play we're always pretty proud of ourselves. Hopefully we can keep confident and keep winning games! After going so close to winning the league last season, missing out on goal difference, is there an extra determination this time around to get that title back? Definitely! The heartbreak at the end of last season has made us more determined to win it this season You have taken over the captaincy this season, what has it been like for you? It's great, I am really proud of the team. They are a good bunch of girls. Do you think that the result against Cardiff City will prove to the other teams and challengers that you really mean business this season? I think they already knew it to be honest! Blackpool Wren Rovers are relishing the opportunity to take on Premier League opposition this Sunday when they take on Bradford City in the Second Round of the F.A.Women’s Cup. The North West League side, who have started well in the Premier Division following promotion at the end of last season, must travel to Yorkshire for the tie but player manager Sam Wilcock told Women’s Soccer Scene: “The team are very excited to be playing a club like Bradford City in the FA Cup and it comes at a good time, as in our last game we beat local rivals Blackpool Ladies FC in the league, but also at a bad time because we have not played since that game on the 5th December because of the weather and Christmas. “We are a team who enjoy playing against teams from higher leagues and we like to test ourselves. We have a few experienced players who have played in the Combination league and also players who are playing at their highest level now but we know can play at a higher level so we tell them to go out there and show us what they have got. “I remember playing against Bradford when we were both in the Combination league so I know it will be a challenge. Rovers captain Nikki Berko added: “We are really looking forward to testing ourselves against higher league opposition and know it will be extremely tough against a good side, but we can take confidence from beating Blackburn Rovers in the Lancashire Cup Final last year and that proves that anything can happen in the cup!” Blackpool Wren Rovers have embarked on an impressive run in the Cup this season, the most notable of their four victories so far coming against Northern Combination leaders Mossley Hill. The Lancashire side have also progressed at the expense of Middleton Athletic, Chester City and Hull City.

[email protected] On Christmas Eve, the Nottingham Women's Centre on Chaucer Street held their second annual Soup Kitchen event and Nottingham Forest Ladies were humbled to be part of the event. After hearing of the event, Forest Ladies gathered support from all age groups in the build up to the event by collecting donations of clothes, small toys/gifts for children, non-perishable food and empty boxes for storage for the day. In addition Club representatives from the club were on hand to help out on the day itself. Centre Manager Melanie Jeffs had the following to say about the day: "After a tough year for many people, it was great to finish 2013 with an event like this. In the course of five hours we fed well over 100 women and approximately 60 children. We provided clothes and toys to women, as well as food parcels and information on crisis support available over the Christmas period. We simply couldn't have done this without the generous donations and hands-on support provided by the community, including Nottingham Forest Ladies FC. "We were completely stunned a few days before the event when Forest Ladies turned up with a van full of donations. After a few quick peeks into the bags we realised that this was going to make Christmas special for a lot of women and children, whom otherwise might not have much to look forward to. "We really hope to have the opportunity to work with Forest Ladies again in the future." Forest Ladies Director of Football, Lisa Dawkins was instrumental in supporting the event both before the event and on the day - and acknowledges the Centre's cause: "The Centre has many initiatives to support women in the Nottingham Community but this annual event affords a chance to share the true spirit of the Christmas season and to help those in greater need at a time which brings about financial pressures alongside. It was so good to see such a positive effect from the Forest Ladies community having benefit and we hope to maintain the support going forward." Club Operations Manager Steven Gray added: "When Forest Ladies heard about the event we instantly decided that we wanted to help out as much as possible, as a club we collected up as much as we could for this great cause. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Nottingham Women's Centre for allowing us to be involved."

Yeovil Town Ladies FC are delighted to confirm the appointment of Trevor Jenkins as General Manager. Trevor, 34, has over 18 years background experience and has previously worked as the Director of Arsenal Soccer Schools South West along with being a Head Coach at Richard Huish College and Taunton Town FC Youth Team. He was previously a Head Coach at the Somerset Girls Centre of Excellence for two seasons. He is a UEFA B coach and is hoping to begin his UEFA A Licence next year. He took up his new post on 1st January. Commenting on his appointment, Jenkins said: "I am delighted to be given the opportunity as General Manager of YTLFC. The club has a terrific vision of where it wants to get to and I am excited to be a part of such a wonderful family club. I hope I can help YTLFC to achieve its aims by becoming a club competing at the very highest level in the WSL." Club Chairman David Mills added: "It was vital that we secured the services of someone who we knew had a real enthusiasm for the club, as well as having a good background in football and the skills of an able Business Manager. In Trevor we have found exactly that and I have no doubt he will play a major part in driving this club forward in the FA WSL."

WHITLEY BAY v BLACKBURN ROVERS Whitley Bay ended the challenge of Brighouse Town by beating them 2-1, goals coming from Julie Duggan and Catherine Shields. The win lands the North East League side with a plum home tie against Premier League Blackburn Rovers. Formed in 1991, Blackburn Rovers enjoyed a glorious rise to the pinnacle of women's football. Under the supervision of the club's Community Department, the ladies team needed only seven seasons to reach the Northern Combination. Following a move to the club's magnificent £20m Brockhall training complex in 2003, Rovers went on to lift the Lancashire Cup and become the first team to win [email protected] the Northern Combination title with a 100% record. Rovers then made a massive impact in their first year of Premier League football, narrowly missing out on promotion when ending the season third but an undefeated Rovers side set a Northern Division record in 2005-06, winning 20 of their 22 league games and manager Andy McNally became the first coach from outside the top flight to be named Manager of the Year. Adam Lakeland became manager in January 2007 and guided them to the F.A.Women's Cup semi finals and a top half finish and they remained in the National Division until relegation in 2011. Last year they finished third in the Northern Division. This season is seeing Blackburn going through a period of transition under the interim management of Gemma Donnelly, assisted by Amanda Goodwin. Hannah Forster is captain and namesake Nichol Forster is leading scorer and the experience of stalwart Katie Anderton is valuable to the team. The match takes place at Hillheads Park at 1pm and Blackburn will start as favourties due to league status, but Whitley Bay are unbeaten at home this season and will have their eyes set on an upset. CARDIFF CITY LADIES v ST NICHOLAS St Nicholas notched up their fourth win in the Cup this season and their most impressive to date, beating South West Combination high fliers Forest Green Rovers 1-0 with a goal from Becky Rexworthy. They have been rewarded with a trip over the Severn Bridge to play Cardiff City Ladies of the Premier League. Cardiff City were founded in 1975 as Llanedeyrn Ladies Football Club after a local charity match. After a few years in the South West League and a lot of success gained in five-a-side competitions, in 1981 the club decided to change its name to Cardiff. Later that season they won the All England five a side trophy, becoming the first club to take the trophy outside of England, a record still held today. In 1984 the club were the South West League champions and have over the years won many domestic cup competitions. In 1993, Cardiff Ladies linked up with the League of Wales club Inter Cardiff and that same season was the start of an enjoyable association with Cardiff Athletic Stadium which still to this day is the clubs home ground having moved across the road to the brand new recently built stadium. At the beginning of 1997-98, the club severed all connections with Inter Cardiff and changed their name to Cardiff County, forming links with Cardiff County Council, until 1999 when they changed their name once more to Cardiff City, but remained an independent outfit. The same season they were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history, but unfortunately could only sustain their position for two seasons and were relegated in 2001. Success in the Combination league came in the League Cup before they were promoted once again in the 2003-04 season, this time with a 100% winning record – the first in the league's history, regaining their status in the Premier League Southern Division. For the first time in its history Cardiff were promoted to the FA Premier National League in 2005-06 season. Unfortunately the club was relegated back to the Southern Division after enjoying two seasons playing amongst the top 12 teams in the country, but two years later they returned after a dramatic end to the season and an unbeaten run of games that got them into second spot in the league and promotion back to the National Division. Jamie Sherwood took over as manager from long serving Michele Adams, briefly assisted by Jessica Fishlock, and he helped guide the team to eighth place. This year they are in the hunt for the Southern Division title and have a strong squad captained by Kayleigh Green. Several of the squad are Welsh internationals including Nicola Cousins and Lauren Townsend plus Michelle Green, who is her country's most capped women's international. Several of the players have come up from their vibrant junior sections, Nicola Cousins has been with the club since she was 11 years old whilst Zoe Atkins and Kayleigh Green have been present since they were 14. Special mention must go though to club secretary Karen Jones MBE, who has been with the club since its formation and has been a huge servant both to her club and the women's game. Cardiff City Ladies will start as strong favourites for the tie but St Nicholas will approach the game in confident mood and should not be underestimated. Dearne & District on the attack against Edlington Royals (Julian Barker).

[email protected] Cardiff Met Ladies have gone eight points clear at the top of the Shared Access Welsh Premier Women's League after beating second placed Cardiff City FC 7-0. City did have a couple of chances to take the lead during the first half but it was Cardiff Met who took the lead on the stroke of half time through Ellie Curson. After the break, a sending off and injury made it tough for City, who were forced to finish the game with nine players, and the students capitalised ruthlessly despite their opponents not giving up in the torrential rain and strong wind. After Ellie Sargent had doubled their lead, Laura Walkley added two superb strikes and Chloe Tucker headed in the fifth from a corner. Abby Picton produced a neat finish before Walkley completed her hat-trick late on via a solo effort. PILCS are back up to third but kept in touch with the leading sides by running out 4-0 winners away to Aberystwyth Town. Katrina French ensured that the 'Green Army' were ahead at the break and Ceri Hudson added a second early in the second half, before Lindsey Davies netted twice to round off the scoring. Port Talbot Town meanwhile returned from Northop Hall with a 3-0 victory under their belts, condemning the home side to their tenth straight defeat. Laura Amor opened the scoring for Port Talbot and Jessica Curran extended their lead on the half hour, with Rachel Ball wrapping up the points with fifteen minutes remaining. Wrexham continue to improve and will have their sights set on the top half of the table following their 4-2 success away to Caernarfon Town. Ashley Hayes scored the only goal of the first half for Wrexham and Emma Rowden netted the second, before a flurry of goals came in the last ten minutes. Katie Williams reduced the arrears for the home side with Hayes replying five minutes later, Sioned Jones again gave Caernarfon late hope but Hayes steadied any Wrexham nerves by completing her hat-trick in injury time. The weather did play its part though and had the final say regarding the other two matches. Swansea City's match with Llanidloes was abandoned at half time due to the conditions with the scoreline goalless and the game between Newcastle Emlyn and Llandudno Junction fell victim to a waterlogged pitch.

The regime change in leadership of the national teams, the selection of ten clubs to expand the Women's Super League and the rolling out of the changes described in the FA's 'Game Changer' document have given the year a 'beginning of an era' feel. The landscape of the sport has changed forever and, as always, there have been winners and losers as the evolutionary process gathers pace. A major catalyst for change was the dismal showing of the England senior team at the UEFA European Championships in Sweden in July. The dismissal of Head Coach was announced just as the England Under-19 team was starting a highly creditable campaign in their own version of the competition held in Wales and leading to a runners-up spot, revealing that the mid to long term supply of senior international candidates is healthy. The Under-17s failed to qualify for their World Cup, losing out on penalties but gaining valuable experience in a home based UEFA European Championship. Brent Hills was rewarded for a flawless interim managership with the post of Head of Elite Women's Performance in December but the big prize went to Mark Sampson whose immediate task is to ensure qualification for the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada. Sampson had overseen one of the success stories of 2013 as manager of Bristol Academy WFC, whose second place finish in the FA WSL and FA Women's Cup Final appearance bore witness to an ability to get a group of players performing to their maximum. Liverpool defeated Bristol Academy in a title deciding showdown on the final day of the WSL season but arguably the decisive moment was 's 89th minute thunderbolt which settled their first meeting on August 10th. That 4-3 away win gave Liverpool the margin of comfort and meant that Academy needed a win on the final day. There is little doubt that Liverpool deserved the title for their excellent recruitment and the skill of manager Matt Beard in finding a settled team shape which brought out the best in so many players. The Liverpool triumph came after nine years of domestic league domination by Arsenal. Under new manager Shelley Kerr, the Gunners lifted both domestic cups but were consigned to third place in the WSL due in part to a points deduction imposed for an administrative error. The subsequent exodus of players from the club might be seen as the end of an era. Certainly it would seem that Arsenal are no longer the brand leaders in terms of investment and training schedules, or at least their ground breaking approach to the sport has been taken a step further by rivals. The expansion of the WSL was always going to be a controversial process. In fact 33 clubs, including the eight founder members, applied for WSL 1 or 2 franchises with a maximum of 20 to be chosen. In the end, 18 were successful and 15 were not. Clearly, the successful applicants were those who were deemed best able to offer what the governing body wanted. Many neutrals felt dismayed at the timing of the announcement of Doncaster Rovers Belles' placement in WSL 2 for 2014, one game into their 2013 WSL1 campaign. The next expansion date is currently set at 2018 so those wishing to join the elite have plenty of time to prepare their proposals. Of course 98% of adult women footballers operate in around 1,000 clubs outside the newly constituted elite structure. WSL bound Sunderland and Aston Villa took the honours in the Women's Premier League National Division and League Cup respectively. Reading FC Women and Sheffield FC won the WPL Southern and Northern Divisions and Oxford United, Stoke City, Chesham United and South Durham & Cestria won their Combination leagues. One notable and regrettable casualty during 2013 was Colchester United who were unable to complete their season after an exemplary record of developing and promoting local talent over recent years. Recent announcements from the FA have clarified their vision of the new landscape. The major change is the removal of the FA Women's Premier League from 2014 in favour of a Championship which combines the current WPL with the Combination leagues. All available information seems to indicate a considerable reduction in FA funding for the WPL clubs going forward. The change in league name is to ensure that there is a 'clear tier structure within the women's football pyramid', the Championship being deemed the 'third and fourth tier' of the women's game, according to the FA statement. Particularly unfortunate amongst many victims in this process is one club which has gone from being members of the highest league in 2010-11 to being designated 'third tier' in 2014 without having suffered relegation on the field! On a personal note, I completed ten years as a fan of the game and saw 96 matches in 2013. My match of the year was Denham United 5 Norwich City 4 in the South East Combination on the opening day of the 'traditional' season on August 18th. A brilliant rollercoaster of a match on Denham's return to Combination level football, reflecting all that is best in the women's game. I hope the future will be bright for all levels of the game with the FA commitment to a 'thriving winter pyramid' being properly honoured and their ambitious plans for elite development bearing fruit for English talent. [email protected] Belles boot camp a success! Doncaster Rovers Belles enjoyed their annual pre-season Boot Camp on the weekend of 4th and 5th of January thanks to the generous hospitality of Ramada Encore Doncaster. The hotel, based close to Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport, played host to the two day training camp, where the squad engaged in a number of activities. The weekend began with a dinner buffet prepared by Ramada staff, which was well received by players and staff alike. The Belles contingent then headed to one of Ramada's meeting rooms where Head Coach Gordon Staniforth delivered a number of activities including a detailed presentation, some group tasks and a football based quiz. After a relaxing night's sleep in Ramada's stylish bedrooms, the squad were abruptly woken at 6.30am with only fifteen minutes prepare themselves for the morning. At 6.45am, the team congregated outside the hotel and completed some team building exercises before the physical test began. Following some long distance running and sprints, the team were led through a circuit of exercises, before tackling the log and tyre carrying. Some more running followed before the squad returned to the hotel. Before indulging in the freshly prepared breakfast, the team took time to have a photo with Ramada Encore's Deputy General Manager Stuart Breen. The club would like to extend a warm thanks to Ramada Encore Doncaster for their fantastic hospitality over the course of last season and for this highly enjoyable weekend. All agreed that the weekend was a resounding success, and this was largely due to the excellent care Ramada Encore offered to the squad. Get fit for the new year... The London FA are pleased to announce that in partnership with Ladies Super Liga, they will be running a women's 7-a-side league at the Powerleague in Shoreditch, London, E1 6GJ. [email protected] The London FA have received some funding from the FA small sided fund to run some small sided football for women across London and so far have run three five-a-side leagues. This 7-a-side league is another step in creating different playing opportunities for women and it is hoped that it will attract those who have played five-a-side and want to try something a bit different along with those who play on both a recreational basis and in 11-a-side teams. Emma Barnes, W&G FDO for London FA, says: "This is something a bit different to the usual five-a-side leagues so we hope that it will be attractive to current teams and any new teams who want to get involved. It is a great way to socialise and keep fit at the same time as well as being in a fantastic central location. With the recent bad weather it is also a great way to guarantee regular football as it will be taking place on a 3G pitch." The league will run on Friday evenings for 10 weeks from 7th February through until 11th April from 7pm- 9pm. The cost to enter a team is just £350 for the 10 week league, which works out at just £35 per week. The league will be affiliated and officiated by LFA referees. At the end of the league there will be prizes for the winning team and the runners-up. Any ladies can enter the league as long as they are 16 or over. If you are interested in entering a team into this league or would like some more information please contact Stacey Cruse at [email protected] or Emma Barnes at [email protected].
