This part of the collection represents an attempt to reproduce a picture of how the region’s public education system developed between 1703 and 1861. In putting this work together, the authors drew upon a pool of statistical data published in Memorandum Books for Voronezh Governorate, reports by the Minister of Public Education, and Memorandum Books for certain educational institutions (e.g., the Voronezh Male Gymnasium).

In terms of methodology, the authors made extensive use of the statistical method.

    Image not found or type unknown Ural Mission - Defunct JÓN HJÖRLEIFUR STEFÁNSSON Jón Hjörleifur Stefánsson, M.A., is a Ph.D. candidate, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam The Ural Mission was a European Russian church unit that operated from 1911 to sometime after 1917. Territory and Statistics1 Period: 1911–c. 1917 Territory: The Governorates of Kazan, Orenburg, Perm, Samara, Ufa, and Vyatka, and the Ural Oblast west of the Ural River Membership: 316 (1915) Churches: 16 (1915) Organizational History Adventists had arrived to at least some parts of the Ural Mission’s territory by the late nineteenth century.2 In 1906 the territory belonged to the Asian Russian Field, the East Russian Mission from 1907, and to the Siberian Mission from 1909. In 1910, the East Russian Mission divided into the Ural and Volga Missions. This was a step in creating the Siberian Union with its subfields, all of which started operating in 1911. At the European Division meeting in September 1909, it was decided to organize Siberia into the Siberian Union separate from the Russian Union. The Russian Union agreed to the plan at its annual session, March 3–8, 1910. The changes took effect the following year. All the fields of the Siberian Union were organized at the same time (except the Turkmenistan Mission which already existed). One of the new Siberian church units was the Ural Mission. It comprised Kazan, Perm, and Vyatka Governorates from the Middle Russian Mission, and Orenburg, Samara, and Ufa Governorates from the East Russian Mission (which was abolished at this time) and the Ural Oblast west of the Ural River.

  • The Significance of Late Anthropological Collections
    European Research Studies Journal Volume XX, Special Issue, 2017 pp. 333-342 The Significance of Late Anthropological Collections Ekaterina M. Makarova1 Abstract: Late medieval anthropological materials are rarely subjected to scientific research. The authors of this work attempt to demonsrate the importance of such investigations. Despite a rather large number of writen sources, late anthropological materials can significantly extend the collection of sources related to the specified period. In order to illustrate this concept the authors conducted an analysis of paleoanthropological materials from the island town of Sviyazhsk dating back to 16th-17th centuries. The materials have been discovered at excavations of parish Orthodox burial grounds. All the burial grounds date back to the same period, which allowed the reearchers to incorporate the materials into a single series. The investigation was conducted in accordance with a standard program adopted in the Russian Federation: determination of gender and age; subdivision of the collection into two series on the basis of gender; intragroup and intergroup aalysis of the series. This article features a analysis of the male portion of the collection, as investigations of male collections is more widely used in palaeoanthropology, and much more reference material is available for their execution. The analyzed material was subdivided into the following two series: the first one comprised materials from a monastery burial ground, and the second – parish necropoleis of the town. An intergroup comparison was conducted with the application of canonical analysis. A dendrogram was plotted in order to visualize the acquired data. As a result of conducted invesigation the authors established that both monastery and parish series from the island town of Sviyazsk subjected to intragroup analysis demonstrate their correspondence to the Eu Caucasian group with a Mongoloid component of local Ural origin in the morphology of sculls from the parish series.

Comparing Mendeleev’s forecasts of the size and age structure of population of Russia with the modern statistical data, the author discusses the reasons for the “failure” of forecasts. The arsenal of modern demographic tools can be supplemented with Mendeleev’s idea on using the formula (law) of the vertical parabola in studying the age structure (the dependence between the size of the group and age). JEL CODES: J11, J13 Brilliant discoveries and inventions in the field of natural sciences (the periodic law and the system of elements, the elasticity of gases, smokeless powder, etc.) are just one side of the multifaceted scientific and social activities of the outstanding Russian scientist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev. Throughout his life he actively participated in the economic life of the country; he not only thought, compared, advised, but even gave his own example of how to act. Thus, in the Klin district he bought “...about 400 acres of land, the main mass of which was occupied by forests and meadows” [Mendeleev, 1995: 17], organized there an exemplary agricultural production and in 6-7 years proved that even on scarce land near Moscow it is possible not only to provide its population with bread, but also to trade surpluses.

The relevance of the problem under study is determined by the fact that today Muslim social movement is becoming more active and widespread in Russia and all over the world. The article aims to show how Russian Muslims’ social movement combined the slogans for religious autonomy and the transformation of Russia into a legal state during the revolution of 1905-1907. The study of this is- sue is based on the theory of capital by Pierre Bourdieu, since the creation of a religious autonomy along with the religious capital by the clergy sought to acquire cultural, social and symbolic capital. We come to the conclusion that Islahat Esaslary (‘Fundamentals of Reforms’) by Musa Beeghi fo- cuses on the desire of the Russian Muslim elite, especially the Tatar elite, to use the social movement and the reform projects of the period of the Russian Revolution of 1905-1907 to create stable struc- tures of religious autonomy. Musa Beeghi's work tells of the projects by Rizaetdin Fakhretdin who played a key role in the religious structures of the Muslims of the Volga-Ural region, starting from the first years of the last century until his death in 1936.
