INTRODUCTION A book on such a subject, written to give a plain statement of facts and do something for a good cause, could have no intro- duction better than this letter from one of the eminent divines of the age : 57 West Forty-Sixth Street, New York, Nov. 4, 18S9. Esq., Harrisburg, Pa. J. J. McLaurin, My Dear Sir ; I see by Governor Beaver's letter to the publisher that you propose to write a book on the Johnstown Flood. It should be done at once, while the scenes and incidents of those dreadful days are fresh and unfaded in our minds. Let the story of the awful calamity be put into enduring type for future gene- rations. It ranks among the great calamities of the world and deserves a place in History. -

Smith, Supervisor Steven Hoelscher Randolph Lewis Karl Hagstrom Miller Shirley Thompson Permanent Underground: Radical Sounds and Social Formations in 20th Century American Musicking by John F. Cline, B.A.; M.A. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2012 Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to my mother and father, Gary and Linda Cline. Without their generous hearts, tolerant ears, and (occasionally) open pocketbooks, I would have never made it this far, in any endeavor. A second, related dedication goes out to my siblings, Nicholas and Elizabeth. We all get the help we need when we need it most, don’t we? Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank my dissertation supervisor, Mark Smith. Even though we don’t necessarily work on the same kinds of topics, I’ve always appreciated his patient advice. I’m sure he’d be loath to use the word “wisdom,” but his open mind combined with ample, sometimes non-academic experience provided reassurances when they were needed most. Following closely on Mark’s heels is Karl Miller. Although not technically my supervisor, his generosity with his time and his always valuable (if sometimes painful) feedback during the dissertation writing process was absolutely essential to the development of the project, especially while Mark was abroad on a Fulbright. -

THE RESIDENTS TÊTE À TÊTE E 40 ANNIVERSAIRE
International Pop Underground Parks, Van Dyke
Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music: A Core Collection February 22, 2008, Newport, RI In the summer of 2006 a new music course was launched at Youngstown State University, Underground Architects of Modern Pop Music. The course was a survey of unsung composers, experimentalists, and bands that although commercially unsuccessful by music industry standards, have proven since to be powerfully influential. The artists examined created music for its own sake and recorded and released their music on small, independent labels. In some cases they recorded in their own living rooms or basements, fostering the DIY (Do it yourself) ethic that is now transforming the music business as we know it. The course began with a consideration of the pop music industry, how “hits” are manufactured, the double-edged nature of copyright, and payola. This set the stage for analytical, critical listening, both to the innovators who were virtually unknown at the time and to the chart-topping hits of the time. The contrast between the two was profound and prompted much and vigorous discussion. What emerged is a bibliography of essential recordings, monographs, and DVDs representative of the most influential, “under the radar” artists from the late 1960’s to the early 1990’s, a core collection. Students and scholars in music and an array of interdisciplinary fields will benefit immensely from exposure to the innovations and inventions of the artists and material included here. You know, when I'm not composing music for David Cronenberg and the Cinema of the Extreme , a brief BBC documentary that preceded a 1997 broadcast of Videodrome , I like to 'Crash' on the couch with a good Residents album. And I don't mean to give you the 'Shivers,' but this album's so great, it'll drive you 'Rabid'! So swat away 'The Fly,' 'Spider' and 'M. Butterfly' resting on your 'Stereo,' because these songs are 'Dead Ringers' for some of the best Residents tracks ever recorded! Also, thank your wife for the 'Naked Lunch' and please accept my apo Hi, I'm Mark Grindle.
