The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1992 MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD November 27, 1992 - January 23, 1993 A survey of more than fifty films by Michael Curtiz (1888-1962), one of cinema's most prolific directors from the studio era, opens on November 27, 1992, at The Museum of Modern Art. As Warner Bros, house director in the 1930s and 1940s, Curtiz symbolizes the crispness and energy that distinguished the Warners' style. On view through January 23, 1993, MICHAEL CURTIZ: FROM HUNGARY TO HOLLYWOOD explores the consistent quality and versatility of the filmmaker's work. The Hungarian-born Curtiz mastered virtually all genres and, during his twenty-seven-year career at Warner Bros., made every type of film from westerns and musicals to social dramas and comedies. A strong director of actors, he made stars of such disparate types as Errol Flynn, John Garfield, and Doris Day, and earned an Academy Award and a renewed career for Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce (1945). Many of his films were popular critical and financial successes. The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release January 1991 HARD, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL--IDA LUPINO, FILMMAKER AND ACTRESS February 1 - March 9, 1991 A retrospective of films tracing the achievements of Ida Lupino, one of the more distinctive actresses of the American screen during the 1940s and 1950s, opens at The Museum of Modern Art on February 1, 1991. Although primarily known as an actress, Ida Lupino has also had a singular career behind the cameras. At a time when filmmaking in Hollywood was not open to women, Lupino wrote, directed, and produced a series of low-budget films and later became a prolific television director. HARD, FAST, AND BEAUTIFUL — IDA LUPINO, FILMMAKER AND ACTRESS, continuing through March 9, presents twelve features in which Lupino starred, six films she directed, and a selection of her television work. This exhibition highlights some of Lupino's finest performances, with such memorable films as Raoul Walsh's psychological portrait of a gangster High Sierra (1941), and Jean Negulesco's melodrama Road House (1948). Also included are Vincent Sherman's The Hard Hay (1942), about a bitterly ambitious woman who pushes her sister to stardom, and Walsh's The Man I Love (1946), the story of a nightclub singer who is pursued by a mobster. Born in London in 1918 to a British theatrical family, Lupino began to play young sophisticates at age fourteen. After moving to Hollywood in the early 1930s, she matured into an actress of rare feeling and intensity during the 1940s. In 1948 Lupino and her then husband, Collier Young, founded Emerald Films, which was later known as The Filmakers.
