CO-295 VIROVITICA ON CADASTRAL MAPS KICINBACI S. State geodetic administration, VIROVITICA, CROATIA Virovitica is a town in northern Croatia with a population of 15,000. The town is situated in the valley of the Drava river, in the southern part of the Pannonian Basin. The year 1234, when Virovitica was made a free trade town, is regarded the town’s founding year. The regular form of Virovitica indicates that the town was founded on a crossroads of two important traffic routes. The first route runs from the West to the East parallel with the Drava river, which is a tributary to the Danube; the second route runs from the North to the South. Being situated near the Hungarian border Virovitica also has a Hungarian name – Veröcé, which means “a small door”, a name that reminds of that there is a passage there from the Drava river valley to the Sava river valley through the Bilogora mountainous range. Some of the wealthy landowners had made the maps of their own estates even before any systematic survey was done, but these maps are not dealt with in this paper. The subject matter here is the systematic surveys and maps that are the result of the surveys. My wish was to analyse our cartographic heritage and link it with modern technologies. THE 19th CENTURY The Virovitica Town Museum keeps some of the cadastral records from the time of Emperor Joseph II, when the survey of the 18th century locality of Virovitica was carried out. This preserved data does not contain any graphic supplements. -

Permanent Mission of the Republic of Croatia EF.DEL/10/07/Corr.1 to the International Organizations in Vienna 23 January 2007 ENGLISH only Statement made by Mr. Zdravko KRMEK, State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management (Session IV of the 15th OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum, Vienna, 23 January 2007) Mr. Chairman, in the framework of our today's discussion I would like to stress the importance of a consultation between neighbouring states and at the regional level when combating soil degradation in the aim to avoid social problems linked to sustainable development. The Republic of Croatia, as probably a number of other states who have been part of former federations or composite states, has interesting experience in the field: rivers or river basins of internal nature are now of international character. This requires a number of interstate agreements on integral water management. One of the best examples for good cooperation on the regional level is without any doubt the Framework Agreement in Sava River Basin signed in 2003 by four countries of the Former Yugoslav Federation: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia with the participation of international partners including the Stability Pact and the OSCE. This initiative is today better known as Sava River Initiative and the first experience shows that this is a very good basis for further cooperation between these four countries. With the Republic of Slovenia there is also the Agreement of Integral Water Management, signed in 1997, as well as with Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996. With the Republic of Montenegro a preparation of such an agreement is in final phase, as well as with the Republic of Serbia. -

Accordingly, the difference in poverty between two populations can be attributed to disparities in their average incomes and in the levels of income inequality. In this paper, we decompose the differences in relative poverty between each of the twenty-one Croatian counties and Croatia as a whole into the contributions of the mean income and income inequality, using the Household Budget Survey data for 2010. The decomposition framework that we utilize here is one usually applied for decompositions of intertemporal poverty changes, and is based on the concept of Shapley value from cooperative game theory. Poverty is measured by three conventional measures – the headcount ratio, the poverty gap, and the squared poverty gap – and robustness of the results to switching from one measure to another is discussed. The results of decompositions show that in most cases both the mean income and inequality differences contribute to poverty variation across the counties, relative to poverty in Croatia as a whole. When poverty is measured by the headcount ratio, the income contribution dominates the inequality contribution, while when we switch to the other two measures, which give more weight to poorer among the poor, the inequality contribution starts to dominate. -

Sava River Basin Project
Protection of Biodiversity of the Sava River Basin Floodplains International (WI) with technical support from Orbicon (DK) have jointly initiated the Protection of Biodiversity of the Sava River Basin Floodplains project to support the Sava Basin countries in identifying, designating and managing the biological and landscape diversity along the Sava River and in supporting the implementation of the EU Birds and Habitats Directives. The proposed project will demonstrate innovative protection and management schemes that seek to combine viable land use practices, biodiversity protection and management and flood management. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The bio-chemical and physical characteristics of a river are directly affected by water temperature, which therefore affects the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, long term variations of river water temperatures (RWT) in Kupa River watershed, Croatia were investigated. It is shown that the RWT in the studied river stations in- creased about 0.0232–0.0796ºC per year, which are comparable with long term observations reported for rivers in other regions, indicating an apparent warming trend. RWT rises during the past 20 years have not been constant for different periods of the year, and the contrasts between stations regarding RWT increases vary seasonally. Additionally, multi- layer perceptron neural network models (MLPNN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS) models were implemented to simulate daily RWT, using air temperature (Ta), flow discharge (Q) and the day of year (DOY) as predic- tors. -

The Study has been undertaken to define priority wetland and floodplain rehabilitation sites as a component of the Pollution reduction Programme. The present report addresses the identification of former floodplains and wetlands in the Danube River Basin, as well as the description of the current status and evaluation of the ecological importance of the potential for rehabilitation. Based on this evaluation, 17 wetland/floodplain sites have been identified for rehabilitation considering their ecological importance, their nutrient removal capacity and their role in flood protection. Most of the identified wetlands will require transboundary cooperation and represent an important first step in retoring the ecological balance in the Danube River Basin. The results are presented in the form of thematic maps that can be found in Annex I of the study. The study was prepared by the WWF-Danube-Carpathian-Programme and the WWF-Auen-Institut (Institute for Floodplains Ecology, WWF-Germany), under the guidance of the UNDP/GEF team of experts of the Danube Programme Coordination Unit (DPCU) in Vienna, Austria. -

Hydropower dams: threats to the implementation and enforcement of the EU Birds & Habitats Directives The #NatureAlert Countdown is on! But there is still time to take action to save threatened wildlife and habitats across Europe, such as the “Amazon of Europe” – the Drava River! European biodiversity is in freefall. Major gaps in the implementation and enforcement of our nature laws is leaving nature dangerously exposed to serious threats from the development of hydropower. Europe’s rivers are already saturated with more than 25,000 hydropower plants. Hydropower dams fragment rivers, destroy wetlands and, as a consequence, threaten the species that depend on them for their habitat and survival. They also block fish migration routes and trap sediments. The construction of additional hydropower plants would exacerbate the negative impacts that already exist and therefore contradict both the conservation objectives of freshwater habitats protected under Natura 2000 and the objectives of the Water Framework Directive.
