Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi.

BENJAMIN Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Claremont, California 91711 ABSTRACT A new genus of Laboulbeniales, Cupulomyces, is described. Its type species, C. lasiochili, is based on Stigmatomyces lasiochili, originally described by Roland Thaxter in I 917. This taxon subsequently has been classified in two other genera, H esperomyces and Acompsomyces. Structure and development of the thallus of C. lasiochili are described and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Dis­ tinctive features of the receptacle, appendage, and perithecium warrant recognition of a new genus. Key words: Acompsomyces, Ascomycetes, Cupulomyces, fungi, Hesperomyces, Heteroptera, insect parasites, Laboulbeniales, morphology, Stigmatomyces, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Stigmatomyces lasiochili Thaxter was found on a terrestrial bug, Lasiochilus pal/idulus Reut. (order: Heteroptera; suborder: Cimicomorpha; superfamily: Ci­ micoidea; family: Anthocoridae [Henry 1988]), collected in Grenada, West Indies (Thaxter 191 7). This fungus is one of the relatively few Laboulbeniales known on Heteroptera (see summary in Benjamin [1986]) and the only one that has been found on a member of the Anthocoridae.

Citation 2008, 8 Issue Date 2008-03-31 URL http://hdl.handle.net/10466/11136 Rights http://repository.osakafu-u.ac.jp/dspace/ 大阪府立大学大学院生命環境科学研究科年報 (2005・2006年度) 大阪府立大学大学院生命環境科学研究科 堺市中区学園町1番1号 NO. 8 はじめに 本年報(第8巻)は,平成17年および18年度の2年間の研究成果,教育・研究活動,社会活動等の全活動につい てまとめたものである.本研究科は,新生大阪府立大学が平成17年4月に公立大学法人として新たに出発したの を期に,それまでの農学生命科学研究科を生命環境科学研究科に再編整備して新たに発足した.したがって,この 年報は,生命環境科学研究科としての活動をとりまとめた記念すべき最初の報告である. 法人化後の2年間は,組織体制の変更,教員数の削減等に伴って新たに発生した課題に即応しながら,これまで の教育・研究の水準をどのように維持し向上させるかに研究科を挙げて多大な努力を傾注してきた.この結果,い くつかの課題は残るものの,法人化体制は徐々に浸透し,教員個々の意識改革も進みつつあると考えられる.しか し,FD をはじめとする教育改革活動や公的競争的資金の獲得に向けた研究活動に対する取り組みについては,いま なお改善の余地があると思われる.また,中期計画,年度計画に関係する業務やや評価業務が増加する傾向の中で, 一部の教員とっては,教育・研究時間の実質的な確保が難しくなって来ている等,新たな問題の発生も観測されて いる. 「生命」と「環境」を研究科の名称に冠した本研究科は,これまでの農学の領域にバイオサイエンス・バイオテ クノロジーや環境科学などの領域を加えた新たな生命科学関連領域の高度な教育・研究機関として再出発した.「生 命環境科学」と云う学際的な学問領域の知の体系と理念を速やかに整備して周知を図ると共に,本研究科が,この 分野の優れた人材の養成と先進的な研究活動を行う高度教育研究機関であることを社会にアピールし,認知・評価 されるべく不断の努力を積み重ねて行かなければならない.また,社会貢献,地域貢献等の知の活用を強く意識し, 産学官の共同研究を積極的に推進して行くことも重要である. 本研究科が厳しい大学間競争に勝ち抜き,応用生命科学領域の知の拠点として一定の地歩を得て更なる発展を続 けるためには,研究科の「目的・目標と意義」を絶えず再確認にし,自己点検・評価を行うのみならず第三者評価 等を受けて点検と自己変革を続けなければならない. この第8巻は,ここ2年間の本研究科の活動の実体を集大成したものである.関係各位の率直なご批判を戴けれ ば幸いである. 平成20年3月1日 大阪府立大学大学院生命環境科学研究科長 大阪府立大学生命環境科学部長 切 畑 光 統 目 次 はじめに Ⅰ.生命環境科学研究科・生命環境科学部の概要 1.大学院生命環境科学研究科 ………………………………………………………………………………………… 1 (1)生命環境科学研究科の理念・目的 (2)生命環境科学研究科の組織 1)専攻および分野の構成および教育・研究 2)教職員の配置 2.生命環境科学部 ………………………………………………………………………………………………………

XMFennahius+: A new genus of KINNARIDAE (Hemiptera - Fulgoroidea) common to Mauritius and Reunion. The KINNARIDAE show affinities with the CIXIIDAE not merely in their general overall resemblance, but in a number of morphological points to which attention has already been drawn by Muir and other workers, e.g., Metcalf, Fennah, Synave. Conventionally separated from one another by wing-venation, the quite dissimilar structure of the male genitalia confirms that the difference is of familial rank. The presence of wax-producing areas on the sixth, seventh and eighth tergites (vide Plate 18f - top left preparation) of the adult female is a character shared with the MEENOPLIDAE but not the CIXIIDAE. It is rather unfortunate that the members of the family have never been the subject of a special study. Examination of some of their characters (e.g., ? genitalia and text) suggests that in many features they present significant departures from the standard fulgoroid pattern. The presence of a large bursa-copulatrix and reduced valvulae (vide Plate 18b) in Paramicrixia diaphana makes investigation of the live insect highly desirable. Abstract Field and greenhouse studies were conducted in Georgia and South Carolina to determine the tolerance and antibiosis effects of 15 St. Augustinegrass genotypes against the southern chinch bug. ‘Floratam’ and ‘Floralawn’ cultivars were highly resistant to southern chinch bug populations in Georgia and South Carolina. When southern chinch bugs were caged on Floratam for 37 days in a greenhouse study, both survivorship and adult reproduction were either stopped or significantly reduced. Color and quality ratings of heavily infested field plantings of ‘Raleigh’ were not significantly reduced even though this cultivar had the highest chinch bug density. Color and quality ratings for ‘Amerishade’ were significantly lower than all other cultivars. The data suggested that the St. Augustinegrass genotypes exhibited different levels of tolerance to infestation by southern chinch bug. The results called into question the established treatment threshold of 20 to 25 chinch bugs per 0.1 m², which does not consider the tolerance levels among St.
