Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi. -

BENJAMIN Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Claremont, California 91711 ABSTRACT A new genus of Laboulbeniales, Cupulomyces, is described. Its type species, C. lasiochili, is based on Stigmatomyces lasiochili, originally described by Roland Thaxter in I 917. This taxon subsequently has been classified in two other genera, H esperomyces and Acompsomyces. Structure and development of the thallus of C. lasiochili are described and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Dis tinctive features of the receptacle, appendage, and perithecium warrant recognition of a new genus. Key words: Acompsomyces, Ascomycetes, Cupulomyces, fungi, Hesperomyces, Heteroptera, insect parasites, Laboulbeniales, morphology, Stigmatomyces, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Stigmatomyces lasiochili Thaxter was found on a terrestrial bug, Lasiochilus pal/idulus Reut. (order: Heteroptera; suborder: Cimicomorpha; superfamily: Ci micoidea; family: Anthocoridae [Henry 1988]), collected in Grenada, West Indies (Thaxter 191 7). This fungus is one of the relatively few Laboulbeniales known on Heteroptera (see summary in Benjamin [1986]) and the only one that has been found on a member of the Anthocoridae. -

Four species of the genus Amphiareus are recognized in southeastern Asia, including two new species, A. edentulus and A. rompinus, both from Johor, Malaysia. The two known species, A. constrictus (Stål) and A. ruficollaris Yamada & Hirowatari are also diagnosed and figured; the latter is recorded from this region for the first time. The genus is diagnosed and briefly discussed. The collection comprised 127 specimens intercepted primarily at the Miami Inspection Station. Specimens were distributed among 14 gen- era and 26 identified species in 3 families: Anthocoridae (99 specimens), Lyctocoridae (9 specimens), and Lasiochilidae (19 specimens). Seventy-eight of the 127 specimens could be identified to species. The remaining 49 specimens were identified to genus, except for 2 specimens that could not be identified below tribal level. For each identified species, we provide brief descriptions of habitat and prey preferences (where known), and a summary of currently known geographic range. Fifty-six of the 127 specimens were of a single genus: Orius Wolff, 1811 (Anthocoridae: Oriini). The specimens of Orius comprised at least 9 different species; 17 specimens could not be identified to species. -

Rajburicoris stysi gen. nov. and sp. nov. from Thailand is described and the male and female genitalia are examined and illustrated. A review of the diagnostic characters of the tribe Cardiastethini Carayon, 1972, nom. restit., is given. The systematic position of the controversial genus Dufouriellus Kirkaldy, 1906, is discussed and the genus is transferred to Anthocorini; Dufouriellini Van Duzee, 1916, syn. nov., becomes a junior synonym of Anthocorini. Heteroptera, Anthocoridae, Cardiastethini, Dufouriellus, Rajburicoris stysi, taxonomy, new genus, new species, Thailand Introduction The tribe Cardiastethini was erected by CARAYON (1972) and characterized mainly by the vestigial female genitalia; it is distributed worldwide and includes 15 genera. ŠTYS (1975) noted that the valid name of the tribe was Dufouriellini because one of the genera included by Carayon in his new tribe, Dufouriellus Kirkaldy, 1906, was the type genus of Dufouriellinae Van Duzee, 1916. The results of our studies of the Anthocoridae sensu lato and particularly of the genus Cardiastethus Fieber, 1860, and its relatives have been only partially published with the description of a new genus (CARPINTERO & DELLAPÉ 2006). -
