There is still a lot of challenge and hard work required from all to secure the great school we are on route to become and we have confidence in the work we have done thus far. This is a fantastic opportunity to join the team of curriculum leaders as the Head of Art. The art department is well respected amongst students and outcomes are strong. However there is still much work to be done and as a curriculum leader you will be key to driving the necessary improvements. We are looking for a candidate with drive who is committed and determined to be successful in this role. Yours sincerely Vicki Rahn Head of School Northallerton School & Sixth Form College Application Pack | Head of Art Expressive Arts Faculty - Art Department Departmental Vision ● To develop and nurture students’ enjoyment of and appreciation for art in a wide range of contexts. ● To encourage students to become confident, skilled and expressive artists. ● To secure high achievement for all students through the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication of both staff and students. The Art Department The Art department at Northallerton School is dynamic and successful and a vibrant part of the Expressive Arts Faculty. Achievement is strong at both GCSE and A-Level, and results are regularly above national average. The department staff are creative and friendly and are all committed to achieving the best for our students. Everybody in the department aims to deliver high quality teaching, alongside effective and personalised feedback to allow students to make strong progress. As a close-knit team within a school currently in special measures, the expressive arts faculty are absolutely focussed on making the required improvements and maximising the impact of our unique contribution to the curriculum. The department has invested in resources and equipment to offer students specialist techniques and pathways at all levels, with onsite ceramic, screen printing and photography/darkroom facilities available. A specialist art technician is also on hand to provide invaluable support. Courses Year 7 and 8 students have 1 hour of Art every week which follows the school’s SAIL programme, introducing students to key skills, artists and styles and exploring them in a personal way. In Year 9 students who choose to follow the subject have 2 hours of Art every week. This builds on the SAIL programme and provides opportunity to learn new skills and develop them with increased independence and creativity. In Year 10 and 11 the subject follows the OCR GCSE Art and Design - Fine Art specification. Students have 5 lessons a fortnight where their personal approach to a wide range of techniques is encouraged. Option numbers at GCSE are consistently strong which reflects the students positive attitudes of the subject. In Year 12 and Year 13 we offer OCR A level Art and Design - Fine Art. Smaller cohort sizes at A-level, consisting of students from across the Trust schools, allows for a bespoke and personalised delivery and strong investment in the students who regularly follow the subject into Key Stage 5. Enrichment The subject has a strong enrichment programme. Extra-curricular support and opportunities for students to develop their art work is consistently on offer. This goes alongside further enrichment in the form of gallery and site-specific trips, involvement in school production design and set decoration and a popular public exhibition of students' work at Northallerton Town Hall. In Year 12 the students undertake a community project and participate in the EDAS (Easingwold and District Art Society) art exhibition. In Year 13 students are entered into the junior section of the Royal Society of British Artists competition, with several of our students being very successful and having their work exhibited at the Mall Galleries and the Royal Over-seas League in London. Whilst we are proud of these opportunities we recognise that there is more work to be done to celebrate students’ talents within the school and community and to enrich the curriculum for students.
