CURRENT RESEARCH My primary research and practice interest is mindfulness based practices and interventions. I develop and research Mindfulness Programs designed for higher education faculty, staff, and students; K-12 teachers and students; alternative school faculty, staff, and students; after school program staff and youth. Related projects connect to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Finally, I interested in the experiences of educators including residential and alternative school educator experiences.

My future program of research will continue with the development, provision, training, and evaluation of mindfulness and/or contemplative practices in higher education, K-12, social work, families, and communities.

2014-2015: Provided meditation for all faculty, staff and students. This was coordinated with Employee Health and Well Being.

2014: AURCO representative: Acted as a Hamilton Campus representative for the 2014 Association for University Regional Campuses of Ohio (AURCO) conference, Cincinnati, Ohio.

2013-15: Miami University Hamilton Center for Teaching and Learning (MUH CTL) Initial developer and co-leader. Developed center along with Beverley Taylor, Physics, and the input of multiple Hamilton faculty and staff. Developed a Small Group Instructional Design (SGID) process for Hamilton teacher evaluations, led over 20 small group instructional designs, designed and submitted newsletters, planned and advertised events, planned a group retreat, wrote a final report. Co-led leadership collaborative meetings, hold teaching consultation office hours.

2013: Serve on Pre-K Program committee.

2012-2015: Coordinated all Hamilton campus Education, Health, and Society scheduling. I scheduled all Hamilton Education, Health, and Society (EHS) courses during each semester, including summer including five (5) departments, eighty (80) course sections and forty-six (46) mostly part-time and some full-time instructors. This occurred throughout the entire academic year.

2012: MASW program – organized an event designed to gather faculty from both campuses.

COMMUNITY SERVICE 2015: Led mindfulness activities for youth and their families!

2013-2014: Butler County United Way Self-sufficiency Council: This group of professionals and community members review requests for proposals (RFPs) focused on self-sufficiency community based programs.

2012: Mindful Schools and Boys and Girls Club: Provided a 15-session Mindful Schools curriculum to youth at both Boys and Girls Club of Hamilton, Ohio locations. The project included 30+ visits to the club, coordination with the director and employees, developing an IRB and conducting pre and post-test evaluations.

2012: Mindfulness & Miami University Urban Teaching Cohort (MU UTC): Provided mindfulness based exercises to Miami University Urban Teaching Cohort (UTC) students throughout the academic year. I went to various UTC retreats and led students and staff in 30-60 minute sessions about 6 times over the year.

2012-2013: Butler County Homeless and Housing Coalition: I was a coalition member, attended monthly meetings focused on meeting the needs of Butler County residents who do not have access to safe and consistent housing.

2012: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at Miami University Hamilton Downtown: Provided an 8-week stress reduction course to community members at Miami Hamilton downtown. One participant experienced great physical benefits, contacted his physician and I am not setting up similar programs (and a possible clinical trial) at Mercy Fairfield Hospital.

2011-2014: Butler County Coalition for Healthy, Safe, and Drug Free Communities, Coalition Member: Participated in coalition discussions focused on healthy and safe communities. I attended the CADCA conference along with other substance abuse prevention professionals and went to Capitol hill to advocate for children’s mental health services in the schools

2011-2014: Butler County SPFSIG (Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant) Coalition Chairperson: I was part of a team of academics and substance abuse prevention professionals who were assessing and providing recommendations related to Miami University Hamilton and substance use among 18-25 year old students. Part of this project included attending the National Coalition Academy week-long training along with community members (2012) and a Miami Hamilton student. This group also organized a 2013 community event (panel) designed to address binge drinking and the mental health needs of Miami University Hamilton students.

2011-2012: Student Service Project: each semester students from FSW201 (Introduction to Social Work) collected canned goods for families at a local social service organization.

2011: Science Fair Judge: Acted as a judge during spring Science Fair.

2010- 2013: Emergency Money Fund Board Member, Hamilton, OH: Served on the Board of the Emergency Money Fund (EMF). The EMF granted funds to Butler County organizations. Generally, the funds supported utilities, rent, or other related expenses.

2009-2012: United Way Youth Council: This group of professionals and community members review requests for proposals (RFPs) focused community-based youth programs.

2010-2011: Salvation Army - Hamilton, OH: Worked with students to serve food to local residents via the soup kitchen.

2008: Equality Ohio: Distributed postcards and collected signatures for discriminatory firing campaign.

2007-2009: ShareFest: ShareFest was a community wide effort to collect items from Miami Students and distribute them to local residents in need through the Oxford Family Resource Center and Butler County Children Services. I helped plan for the project through my graduate assistantship, but volunteered for the event on my own time.

2007-2008: Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center: Facilitated Days of Dialogue.

2007: Cincinnati Hispanic Fest: Volunteered at festival.

2005: America’s Second Harvest Hunger in America Study: Attended trainer sessions through Mathematica Policy Research. Assisted staff at the Northeast Georgia Food Bank and University of Georgia students as they collected data from food bank agencies and conducted one to one interviews with food bank clients.

1998: Wexner Center for the Arts: Volunteered as an exhibit guide.

1998: the Bottom Line, A Fundraising Group: Volunteered and helped plan this fundraising event.

1998: India: Social Work in a Developing Country: This was a two month study abroad. I volunteered at Don Bosco Social Welfare Rehabilitation Training Center and traveled throughout Southern India visiting agencies, schools, and community development programs in both rural and urban settings.

1997: Winslow Arizona Community Development Project: Volunteered in Winslow for two months and helped organize a community leadership council consisting of local citizens. This council became a neighborhood association that applied for and received grants to improve their community. RECENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Brown University Summer Institute (2015). Summer Program in Contemplative Pedagogy at Brown University. This was a 7 day intensive workshop led by various leaders in the Contemplative Pedagogy field.

Supervisor continuing education (2014). Completed an online training on the Fundamentals of Supervision, NASW Ohio. Ethics continuing education (2014). Completed an online training on the Practice of Ethics of Social Work Testimony, NASW Virginia.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction 9 day Practicum training (2014). This nine-day intensive experiential teacher training completes the formal training for MBSR. Certification will occur after supervision hours.

Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education Summer Institute participant (2014). Received sponsorship for this week long summer institute training focused on developing and practicing contemplative practices in higher education. 2013: CADCA National Leadership Forum conference. National Harbor, MD. "Coalitions: Science, Strategies, and Solutions” was the conference theme. This year the importance of developing broad-based strategic alliances, implementing proven and promising strategies, and achieving population-level change was emphasized. I attended along with other prevention-focused community members and was sponsored by the Butler County Coalition for Healthy, Safe, and Drug Free Communities.

2012-2013: Mindfulness Education Institute (MEI) participant. Watsonville, CA: This is a year- long online and in-person Mindfulness Education Institute along with approximately 80 educators and child-focused service providers from around the United States. 2012-2013: Faculty Learning Community LCPL (Lecturers and Clinical/Professionally Licenses Faculty) participant. Oxford, Ohio. The purpose of this FLC was to incorporate perspectives of multiple stakeholders in the discussion of LCPL faculty positions and their role in "The Engaged University."

2012: Social Work Supervision participant: Participated in a required online Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor (LISW-S) course in order to keep supervisory license.

2012: Safe Zone Training participant. Hamilton, Ohio: Participated in Safe Zone training, a Miami University program designed to create a safer and more supportive social and educational campus climate for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community members.

2011 & 2012: Faculty Learning Community participant (Social Media). Oxford, Ohio. The purpose of this FLC was to investigate how social media has both influenced and been implemented in higher education around the country and then discuss how social media tools can/may be implemented in courses at Miami University.

2011: Center for Mindfulness in Education, Healthcare, and Society conference (participant). Norwood, MA. I attended this conference in order to catch up on recent research. The information gained at this research conference assisted in the development of mindfulness based interventions at the university, schools, and wider community.

I attended this conference in order to a) connect the Miami University Social Work Program to other Ohio programs, social workers, and current policies and b) fulfill part of the continuing education requirements for the Ohio Licensed Independent Social Worker Supervisor (LISW-S) license.

2008-2010: Faculty Learning Community participant (Understanding and Developing an Inclusive Campus). Miami University, Oxford, OH. The purpose of this learning community was to provide participants with a forum for discussion and development of strategies and tools to facilitate inclusion on campus, both in and outside the classroom.
