The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1986 DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA: FIFTIETH ANNIERSARY TRIBUTE ELAINE MAY, November 17 LOUIS MALLE, December 8 Elaine May and Louis Malle will be honored by The Museum of Modern Art as part of the ongoing DIRECTORS GUILD OF AMERICA: FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE. Ms. May, film director, playwright, actress, and comedienne, is the subject of a tribute on Monday, November 17, at 6:00 p.m., when her 1976 revisionist buddy-movie Mikey and Nicky will be screened. Mr. Malle, a provocative director of sensual images who has experimented with a variety of film forms, will present his 1980 film Atlantic City, starring Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon, on Monday, December 8, at 6:00 p.m. In Mikey and Nicky Ms. May tailors the framing and dialogue to the personalities of the actors John Cassavetes and Peter Falk. Convinced that a contract is out for him, Nicky (Cassavetes), a small-time hood, calls his childhood friend Mikey (Falk), a syndicate man. Their one night encounter is the focus of the film. A seemingly casual approach cleverly disguises a tight, carefully-planned structure. From a screenplay by John Guare, Mr. Malle's Atlantic City uses the transitory character of the boardwalk town as a backdrop for a tale of decay and corruption. Mr. Lancaster plays the aging friend and protector of an ambitious nightclub croupier, played by Ms. Sarandon. As a child Ms. May appeared on stage and radio with her father, Jack Berlin. • 1 Louis Malle
1 Louis Malle I started this essay with the assumption that Malle had been an expert, highly intelligent, committed director. Watching his work in sequence, I found that I was right – but that it took him a long time getting there, and that he kept slipping back. There’s one interesting shot in his early films. In Les Amants (1958), as Jeanne Moreau and her soon-to-be lover get near to the chateau where her husband (“the bear”), is standing with her best friend and her previous lover (“the corpses”), Malle contrives a shot – it doesn’t seem a trick – in which you see her soon-to-be lover’s eyes in the rear-view mirror, watching the three unsuspecting bourgeois from a distance. He’s close, big and critical – they’re remote, small, and vulnerable. It gives a feeling of cultural detachment and menace which nothing else in the film’s comfy scenario supports. I wondered if the gaunt, arthritic, unrecognisably bald presence of Gaston Modot as the butler to the chateau was meant as a reference, but it’s probably not. Modot is not just the statue-sucking foot-fetishist in Buñuel’s L’Age d’Or , but is immortal as Schumacher (francese “Shu-ma-chère”), the jealous gamekeeper in La Règle du Jeu . Has Marcel Dalio’s chateau shrunk to this little measure in Les Amants , that they can afford only the elderly gamekeeper and one nanny – and is Moreau’s escape into the erotic night what Nora Gregor might have enjoyed, had she really focussed on her aviator? But, though Les Amants is anti- bourgeois, it’s on such a small scale, and though the more make-up Moreau takes off the more beautiful she gets – cp.

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Honor Thy Father's Obsessions Sophia Stein · Thursday, July 11th, 2013 Justine Malle, daughter of the great French film director, Louis Malle, has made a film about her relationship with her father and his premature death from a degenerative disease. Her father died some eighteen years ago, at age sixty-three, when Justine was only twenty. The narrative feature Jeunesse (Youth) charts the sexual awakening of Juliette, as this coincides with the deterioration of her father over a year. It is a meditative reflection on life and intimacy from daughter Justine, who studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, and who up until now has worked as a translator and documentary filmmaker. “I only saw him a few times [during the year before his death], occupied as I was by my studies, and by my passion for a young man who was later to become my husband,” Justine explains. Jeunesse is the filmmaker’s attempt to reconcile her personal identity with her legacy as the daughter of an undisputed master of film; Louis Malle directed such films as, Phantom India, Lacombe, Lucien, Pretty Baby, Atlantic City, My Dinner with Andre, Au Revoir Les Enfants, and Vanya on 42nd Street. I recently had an opportunity to chat with an extremely jet-lagged Justine Malle upon her arrival from France at the Hotel Carlton in San Francisco. Jeunesse was featured in contention for the New Directors Prize at the San Francisco International Film Festival this past spring. A scene from Justine Malle’s film YOUTH Sophia Stein: In Jeunesse, you capture the intimacy of fathers and daughters talking candidly.
