The main organizer of the panel was Katalin Juhász, senior research fellow at the Institute of Ethnology in the RCH of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.1 Scholars from Finland, Hungary, Austria and Russia responded to the call for papers. Following the successful symposium, the participants wished to publish the proceedings. Katalin Juhász selected a handful of representative papers for Acta Ethnographica Hungarica . In the present 2016/2 issue of the journal, the revised papers are presented with the guest editorial work of her. The papers in this thematic block, Body – Identity – Society: Concepts of the Socially Accepted Body, introduce various aspects of the topic of cleanliness and purity from the perspectives of ethnography, anthropology, and linguistic and literary studies. The papers offer an overview of concepts, theoretical interpretations, methodological approaches, and fi eld research summaries. In anthropology, the attention paid to the issues of cleanliness and purity has increased since the theoretical trend established by the publication of Mary Douglas’ seminal book Purity and Danger on purity and pollution (D 1966). It has been a generally accepted understanding in anthropology that purity and pollution are culturally defi ned categories. -

Kazan Federal University, Institute of Language, 420008, Kazan, Russia Doi:10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n3p677 Abstract The article describes the impact of the USSR state policy on the socio-cultural development of the Vepsian ethnic group in the 1920-80s. The Vepsians are considered as one of the Finno-Ugric nations affected by different aspects of the USSR national policy (from the national localization in the 1930s to the struggle against the so-called "bourgeois nationalism" and mass political repressions after 1938). The authors of the work pay special attention to the reasons of the Vepsians’ migration, considerable reduction of the traditional inhabitance areas and, finally, their assimilation. The aim of the article is to classify these factors and to establish the correlation between their negative impact and the dramatic decrease of the Vepsian population from 32800 in 1926 to 12500 in 1989 (according to the census reports). Finns and Hungarians at times do. When I speak of “Finno-Ugrian cooperation,” I am referring to a linguistic label that joins peoples whose languages are so distantly related that in most world contexts it would evoke no feelings of kinship.1 Similarities in folk culture may largely boil down to worldwide commonalities in peasant cultures at comparable technological stages. The racial features of Estonians and Mari may be quite disparate. Limited mutual intelligibility occurs only within the Finnic group in the narrow sense (Finns, Karelians, Vepsians, Estonians), the Permic group (Udmurts and Komi), and the Mordvin group (Moksha and Erzia). Yet, despite this almost abstract foundation, the existence of a feeling of kinship is very real. Myths may have no basis in fact, but belief in myths does occur. Before denigrating the beliefs of indigenous and recently modernized peoples as nineteenth-century relics, the observer might ask whether the maintenance of these beliefs might serve some functional twenty-first-century purpose. The underlying rationale for the Finno-Ugrian kinship beliefs has been a shared feeling of isolation among Indo-European and Turkic populations. -

Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. Karpukhina2 1 Geological Institute of RAS, Pyzhesky per. 7, Moscow, 119017, RUSSIA 2 Institute of Geography of RAS, Staromonetny per. 29, Moscow, 119017, RUSSIA 3 Lomonsov Moscow State University, Vorobiovy Gory 1, Moscow, 119991, RUSSIA Abstract Two underlying problems of the Late Quaternary history of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) are reviewed in the paper: the position of the southeastern SIS boundary at the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM), which is still widely “migrating” depending on authors’ concepts, and the formation of associated proglacial lakes (i.e. their dimensions, drainage and chronology) in the valleys of Severnaya Dvina River basin. The position of maximum ice limit in the northwest of the Russian Plain remains debatable and is the least reliable compared to the other SIS sectors. Most of the recent reconstructions concerning ice-dammed lakes (water overflows, restructuring of river valleys etc.) exploited the geological survey results of mid-20th century: since then no geological studies have been conducted of the proposed spillways, their filling sediments and age using the modern sedimentological and geochronological techniques. As a result, the majority of the above-mentioned reconstructions have to be considered hypothetical. Here we present new results on two valley sites that allow to suggest that: 1) the SIS did not advance through the lower and middle Vychegda valley at LGM as suggested in some recent publications; 2) the LGM glacier-dammed lake had a very limited extension in the Severnaya Dvina valley and did not exceed to the Vychegda River mouth. -

Argus Nefte Transport Oil transportation logistics in the former Soviet Union Volume XVI, 5, May 2017 Primorsk loads first 100,000t diesel cargo Russia’s main outlet for 10ppm diesel exports, the Baltic port of Primorsk, shipped a 100,000t cargo for the first time this month. The diesel was loaded on 4 May on the 113,300t Dong-A Thetis, owned by the South Korean shipping company Dong-A Tanker. The 100,000t cargo of Rosneft product was sold to trading company Vitol for delivery to the Amsterdam-Rotter- dam-Antwerp region, a market participant says. The Dong-A Thetis was loaded at Russian pipeline crude exports berth 3 or 4 — which can handle crude and diesel following a recent upgrade, and mn b/d can accommodate 90,000-150,000t vessels with 15.5m draught. 6.0 Transit crude Russian crude It remains unclear whether larger loadings at Primorsk will become a regular 5.0 occurrence. “Smaller 50,000-60,000t cargoes are more popular and the terminal 4.0 does not always have the opportunity to stockpile larger quantities of diesel for 3.0 export,” a source familiar with operations at the outlet says. But the loading is significant considering the planned 10mn t/yr capacity 2.0 addition to the 15mn t/yr Sever diesel pipeline by 2018. Transnational Finnish Mobilities: Proceedings of Finnforum XI

Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen This volume is based on a selection of papers presented at Johanna Leinonen and Auvo Kostiainen (Eds.) the conference FinnForum XI: Transnational Finnish Mobili- ties, held in Turku, Finland, in 2016. The twelve chapters dis- cuss two key issues of our time, mobility and transnational- ism, from the perspective of Finnish migration. The volume is divided into four sections. Part I, Mobile Pasts, Finland and Beyond, brings forth how Finland’s past – often imagined TRANSNATIONAL as more sedentary than today’s mobile world – was molded by various short and long-distance mobilities that occurred FINNISH MOBILITIES: both voluntarily and involuntarily. In Part II, Transnational Influences across the Atlantic, the focus is on sociocultural PROCEEDINGS OF transnationalism of Finnish migrants in the early 20th cen- tury United States. Taken together, Parts I and II show how FINNFORUM XI mobility and transnationalism are not unique features of our FINNISH MOBILITIES TRANSNATIONAL time, as scholars tend to portray them. Even before modern communication technologies and modes of transportation, migrants moved back and forth and nurtured transnational ties in various ways. Part III, Making of Contemporary Finn- ish America, examines how Finnishness is understood and maintained in North America today, focusing on the con- cepts of symbolic ethnicity and virtual villages. Part IV, Con- temporary Finnish Mobilities, centers on Finns’ present-day emigration patterns, repatriation experiences, and citizen- ship practices, illustrating how, globally speaking, Finns are privileged in their ability to be mobile and exercise transna- tionalism. Not only is the ability to move spread very uneven- ly, so is the capability to upkeep transnational connections, be they sociocultural, economic, political, or purely symbol- ic.
