Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. Study of African American music is now well established. Beginning with publications like The Music of Black Americans by Eileen Southern (1971) and African American Music by Mellonee Burnim and Portia Maultsby (2006), -

Eventually, they Charlotte Gusay of George Sand Books find the performance space where two Lamont award poetry winners-Henri Coulette and Robert Mezey-are scheduled to read their work. Suzanne Lummis, coordinator of this event as part of her Dogstar Poetry Series, carries glasses ofwine to the audience and asks if any- one is thirsty. Surprised strangers thank her and sip their rose. The two poets-dapper, well- -groomed college professors-deliver briskly paced, poignant samples ofwork . Their voices echo from the small stage, with its garish navy and pink walls. The Dogstar readings, unlike the dozens of other poetry series in the Los Angeles area, cen- ters its events around themes, and not necessar- ily around individual poets. One ofthe readings, Alan Mandel of the Los Angeles Theatre Center centered around the theme "Madness and Re- · covery," attracted droves of people who could relate to losing their minds and feeling better, even if they couldn't relate to poetry, per se. "Life Stories" and "Urban Poetry" were two other themes. A memorial reading for the late William Pillin attracted over 90 people. Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores. -
