FOXTEL programming in 2015 GOGGLEBOX Season 1 The LifeStyle Channel Based on the U.K. smash hit, Gogglebox is a weekly observational series which captures the reactions of ordinary Australians as they watch the nightly news, argue over politics, cheer their favourite sporting teams and digest current affairs and documentaries. Twelve households will be chosen and then rigged with special, locked off cameras to capture every unpredictable moment. Gogglebox is like nothing else ever seen on Australian television and it’s set to hook audiences in a fun and entertaining way. The series has been commissioned jointly by Foxtel and Network Ten and will air first on The LifeStyle Channel followed by Channel Ten. DEADLINE GALLIPOLI Season 1 showcase Deadline Gallipoli explores the origin of the Gallipoli legend from the point of view of war correspondents Charles Bean, Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett, Phillip Schuler and Keith Murdoch, who lived through the campaign and bore witness to the extraordinary events that unfolded on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915. This compelling four hour miniseries captures the heartache and futility of war as seen through the eyes of the journalists who reported it. Joel Jackson stars as Bean, Hugh Dancy as Bartlett, Ewen Leslie as Murdoch, and Sam Worthington as Schuler. -iì~ '1,,J C.12 The Development of the UK Television News Industry 1982 - 1998 Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Alison Preston Deparent of Film and Media Studies University of Stirling July 1999 Abstract This thesis examines and assesses the development of the UK television news industry during the period 1982-1998. Its aim is to ascertain the degree to which a market for television news has developed, how such a market operates, and how it coexists with the 'public service' goals of news provision. A major purpose of the research is to investigate whether 'the market' and 'public service' requirements have to be the conceptual polarities they are commonly supposed to be in much media academic analysis of the television news genre. It has conducted such an analysis through an examination of the development strategies ofthe major news organisations of the BBC, ITN and Sky News, and an assessment of the changes that have taken place to the structure of the news industry as a whole. It places these developments within the determining contexts of Government economic policy and broadcasting regulation. The research method employed was primarily that of the in-depth interview with television news management, politicians and regulators: in other words, those instrumental in directing the strategic development within the television news industry. Its main findings are that there has indeed been a development of market activity within the television news industry, but that the amount of this activity has been limited by the particular economic attributes of the television news product. -

Journal of Language and Literacy Education Vol. 16 Issue 1—Spring 2020 We Been Knowin: Toward an Antiracist Language & Literacy Education April Baker -Bell Abstract: This essay asserts the importance for English/Language Arts educators to become conversant with the features of Black Language and the cultural, and historical foundations of this speech genre as a rule-bound, grammatically consistent pattern of speech. These features go beyond grammar to include such conventions as a reliance on storytelling as a means& of communicating ideas. The author proposes a set of issues for educators to consider so that they may produce antiracist scholarship, praxis, and knowledge that work toward transformation and social change in service of addressing racial, cultural, and linguistic inequities in language and literacy education. The essay concludes with ten framing ideas for generating an antiracist Black Language Pedagogy in order to produce a society founded on respect and appreciation for the historical, cultural, political, and racial underpinnings of Black Language. DAVIES DOVEANNA FULTON-MINOR MICHELLE BACHELOR ROBINSON AMY DAYTON-WOOD A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2011 Copyright Regina Latonya Golar 2011 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation, “African American Vernacular English: Affirming Spaces for Linguistic Identity within the Composition Classroom,” presents the findings of an IRB- approved case study on African American female identity within the first-year composition classroom. The goals of my research are to interrogate the privilege awarded to Standard American English, advocate equality among all cultural dialects, and affirm pedagogical spaces for students’ linguistic identities. My research addresses the links between African American females’ language and identity. The first portion of the case study involves the students’ academic identities. Based on the results of the study, I argue that in order to succeed within academia, African American female students must overcome a silencing of the African American voice as well as their personal insecurities involving language. The second portion of the study involves the students’ societal identities. I argue that incorporating new waves of technology that reflect students’ interests provides students an outlet to explore facets of their identity that fall outside the scope of academic discourse. Within my research, I demonstrate concrete ways to apply the Conference on College Composition and Communication’s position statement Student’s Right to Their Own Language. -

73th REGULAR SESSION OEA/Ser.Q August 4 –14, 2008 CJI/doc.312/08 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil August 14, 2008 Original: Spanish CJI/doc.312/08 THE STRUGGLE AGAINST DISCRIMINATION AND INTOLERANCE (presented by Dr. Hyacinth Evadne Lindsay) INTRODUCTION The fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance is a fundamental issue of human rights and freedoms and the preservation and promotion of cultural diversity is linked to the security, respect for and participation of all members of society.1 The United Nations Commission on Human Rights defined discrimination as “…. any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference which is based on any ground such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enforcement or exercise by all persons on an equal footing of all rights and freedoms”.2 Discrimination is multi-dimensional as aptly illustrated in the following statement “….discrimination takes on as many forms as the biases, prejudices, stereotyping, scapegoating, bigotry and hatreds of individual people do. Discrimination can be passive, as in failure to extend the benefits of society to groups of certain ethnic origins or beliefs. Discrimination also takes the form of some of the most brutal violence in recorded history”.3 [There can be no doubt that the trans-Atlantic slave trade would fall in this latter category]. Intolerance, which is demonstrated by a lack of respect for the practices or beliefs of others and can mean “that people are not treated fairly because of their religious beliefs, their sexuality or even their clothes and hairstyle…” and “lies at the basis of racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and discrimination in general. -

The American people called for justice, not only for Floyd but for all the Black men, women, and children wrongfully executed by police. Beginning with the death of Trayvon Martin in 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement has become a fundamental part of our history and public discourse which has forced us to talk about and face racism. This project seeks to understand how the murder of George Floyd reveals how systemic racism functions in America and is, importantly, understood, articulated, and resisted in Black vernacular discourse and contemporary Black literary texts. My thesis will focus strictly on Black authors, such as Kiese Laymon and Claudia Rankine, with references to Frantz Fanon, James Baldwin, Vershawn Ashanti Young, and Frank B. -

Dear Holland Hall Community, It was five o’clock as we waited at a restaurant just off Broadway in downtown New York City. I was accompanied by Coach Charlie Brown, Director of Stewardship, and Christy Utter ’92, Director of Alumni Relations, while we waited to meet Jeremy Hays ’99. He was between shows, having just completed the Saturday matinée. Donning leather jacket, jeans, and a backwards ball cap, Jeremy arrived, and we found our table. Over burgers and fries, with haste respectful of the second show Jeremy had later that night, we listened to his story of how he moved to Holland Hall from Henryetta, Oklahoma, during his high school years. He explained how Back Row: J.P. Culley, Stephen Brady, JW Craft, Bill Lawson ’81, Keith Goddard ’87, Rev. Irving Cutter, Hal Salisbury, Roger Collins, Jim Adelson; Front Row: Tony Jezek, Amy Koontz, Jamie Zink, Deana Johnson, Tammie Maloney, Susan Stuart much he grew with his writing, thinking, and self-advocacy skills, all to great benefit at the time and years later. And, of course, Peterson ’97, David Ragland he regaled us with stories of his interactions with our beloved Coach Brown.
