Block, M.D. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AT YOUR LIBRARY f one ascends the stairs of the Central Library to the second fl oor, turns right, walking past an area of study tables Iand chairs, you eventually fi nd yourself confronted by a pair of glass-paneled doors. The signage over the doors reads, “Special Collections”. Stepping over the threshold is a transforming experience. One enters a quiet room dominated by a huge library table surrounded by comfortable chairs. Wooden shelving lines all the walls. The contents of the shelves are visible through the metal mesh doors which cover the shelved cases. The shelves and the stacks in the adjoining room contain books, pamphlets, newspapers and news clippings, memorabilia, maps and atlases, documents from the world of politics, entertainment, law enforcement, etc. Here is an archive of Glendale and its environs. Overseeing the collection is Mike Shea, Special Collections Director. We started promptly, and finished before 7 as the room filled. Mary Rose Grim, Vic Pallos If you missed the Annual Meeting, here’s a brief report of our projects over the past VP/Membership year and plans going forward: Bree Moseley The Friends sponsored more than 25 author events over the past year, often joined by other civic organizations as co-sponsors. The Glendale Latino Association Treasurer was a co-sponsor of our book event Taco USA. Glendale Healthy Kids helped Marie Fish co-sponsor Dr. Lawrence Dorr’s book presentation. We’ve partnered with Abril books and Armenian organizations to sponsor Armenian cultural and historical Recording Secretary programs. We focused on local authors with our second self-publishing panel, and Pat Zeider with our programs celebrating the Montrose Centennial. The Library’s One Book One Glendale events for adults and children were both great successes. Thanks to Parliamentarian our VP for Community Events Leon Mayer, who recruits many authors to appear Faranak Van Patten at the library at no charge. Board member Vic Pallos, who is a public relations professional, wrote, designed, and donated the printing of the brochures, and provided stands for them. Helene Block Our Fundraising Committee, headed by Mary Rose Grim, met with Library Stanley L. Block, M.D. managers to figure out ways that branches could organize special programs to Lynda Burns attract members and raise funds. The Chevy Chase branch, on its own, organized the recent Cookbook Sale and Recipe Share. They are a great example of how Janice Carter neighborhoods can rally around their local branches and promote the programs of Ann Chadney the library system. Patricia Du Pre Several members of our board took on a big research project at the end of 2012 and visited four other Friends of the Library bookstores – in Beverly Hills, Burbank, Amy Goldman Koss Pasadena and South Pasadena. We did this to get ideas for reconfiguring the Book Phil Lanzafame Nook when the Central Library facility is renovated. We ended up learning a lot from the way other Friends’ groups conduct their book sales, and our Book Sales Nini Maldonado VP Peter Breckheimer has now refocused our efforts to promote regular monthly Rodica Mondocea dock sales – the second Saturday of each month between 9-noon. Peter, and Helene Block, also manage volunteers who run the Book Nook, and do the background Joyce Morrissey work on our Amazon sales program.
